Home Electronics: New concept and layout from February

In its 14th year, Home Electronics, the Swiss consumer magazine for home electronics, is introducing a new editorial concept and a new layout.

On this occasion, the name was also adapted to the English spelling - Home Electronic became Home Electronics. According to the press release, the structure of the magazine has been adapted to the latest developments in consumer electronics and related areas, in particular the advancing digitalization and networking. The new orientation is reflected in the layout: the magazine appears more modern, more elegant, airier and clearer. The format has grown slightly and the pages appear "closer" to the product.
With a good dash of "Swissness", Home Electronics remains clearly recognizable as a Swiss publication, the press release continues. Issue 2/2010 will start with a print run of 13,500 copies. Newsstand sales will be stepped up and partnerships with retailers will open up new distribution channels. The magazine is published 11 times a year under the direction of Editor-in-Chief René Mosbacher.

Google expands social search functions

Google is making its search even more social in the future. As the company announced in an official blog post, the search will be enhanced with several new features.

Relevant links from friends and acquaintances of individual users are also integrated. The aim is to further improve the search results with such information. "Google Social Search is currently available to all interested users as a beta version.
Essentially, social search is used to link search queries with information from friends from sources such as Google Reader, Twitter or Facebook. Google is planning to integrate "Social Circles" and "Social Content", according to the blog post. These links will take users to a new interface where connections and content relating to social search results will be displayed. Clicking on "My social circle" gives users an overview of their personal network of online contacts and how they are connected to each other.
In turn, public pages are listed under "My social content", which can also appear in the social search results of others. The new features not only search shared content from direct friends, but also from friends of friends, adding a broader field to the search. As Google emphasizes, only content that is already freely accessible will be distributed.

Last but not least: Au revoir, dear freedom of the press

Princess Caroline of Monaco—as anyone interested in royalty will know—is not particularly fond of the tabloid press. She and her husband, Ernst August, Prince of Hanover, regularly take action against the unauthorized publication of photos and articles about their private lives.

And occasionally score a big victory over the paparazzi. Now they have achieved another success: The French people paper Paris Match has been forced to apologize to the couple on its front page. In September 2009, Paris Match had published a photo of Caroline - also on the front page - and announced the couple's separation. According to the court, this violated Caroline and Ernst-August's privacy and right to their own image.
Paris Match showed no understanding at all for the court ruling and lamented an "extreme encroachment on the freedom of information". They had been condemned for telling the truth, the paper said. Anyone who attaches importance to their family's happiness being publicized with photos cannot accuse the same press of publishing unwelcome information. Editorial director Olivier Royant even saw the verdict as proof of the decline of press freedom in France...

Internet use in Switzerland: around 3.9 million people are online every day

According to the latest edition of the Net-Metrix-Base 2009-2 Internet study, about 81 percent of Swiss people use the Internet. This amounts to a total of 4.8 million people.

With an increase of 4 percent, the group of Internet users has grown by a total of 179,000 people within one year, as was reported in a press release on Thursday. The growth in Internet use is based on a nationwide increase in all language regions of Switzerland.
More and more Swiss people are surfing the Internet every day or almost every day. While only around 14% of Swiss people used the Internet every day in 2000, the current study shows a figure of 61%. There is a clear difference between the sexes here. Around 70% of men use the Internet every day, compared to just over half of women.
There are also clear differences by age group: While almost all people aged 14 to 55 (94%) use the Internet occasionally, only around half of those aged 55 and over do so.
The Net-Metrix-Base study provides semi-annual information on the Internet usage behavior of the Swiss population aged 14 and over. The size and socio-demographic structure of the Swiss Internet user base is determined on the basis of around 22,000 computer-assisted telephone interviews (CATI) per year.

Swiss Press Association selects winner of the "Only an advertisement can do that" competition

35 teams submitted 83 campaign ideas featuring 382 visuals—and now the jury has selected the winning entry for “Das kann nur ein Inserat.”.

An ad doesn’t just give you reach. It also prompts readers to react immediately—to get more information right away, or to place an order right then and there, the very moment and place they see the ad. This fundamental concept captures the power of print advertising. And the execution communicates the message quickly and clearly: «Great things start with an ad»—for example, with a brick that instantly turns into an entire house when you scan the ad with your phone. A campaign idea that surprised and won people over like no other. It was submitted by Manuel Rohrer, graphic designer at the advertising agency Contexta in Bern. The winner will receive a cash prize of 10,000 francs, as well as a commission to bring their idea to life and a fee of up to 30,000 francs for that work. In addition, Manuel Rohrer will travel to Brussels in early May to participate, at the invitation of Publicitas Publimedia, in Best Yet 2010, a competition for young creatives from across Europe. Should he be successful there as well, he will travel on to the Cannes Lions shortly thereafter.
Fly to Best Yet 2010, too Filip Wolfensberger and Dominic Zach – a team of participants that made it onto the shortlist and won the ticket in a public drawing held during the awards ceremony.
Fifth Annual Competition for Young Creatives
"Das kann nur ein Inserat" is a programmatic statement, a campaign slogan, and a creative brief all in one. Advertising agencies have been grappling with this concept for three years. Now, for the fifth time, "Das kann nur ein Inserat" is a competition for young creatives. This year, 35 teams submitted 83 campaign ideas and 382 creative concepts—practically matching last year’s high submission rate and even surpassing it in terms of the number of creative concepts.
From 83 to 1 in half a day
The jury spent half a day reviewing and evaluating the submitted campaigns. In the first step, 20 campaigns were preselected and then narrowed down to a shortlist of 7 finalists. Judging was conducted by open show of hands and was 100 percent anonymous—meaning that the jury members did not know the names of the entrants or their agencies, nor could they have deduced them in any way. The jury was chaired by ADC Jury Chairman Andreas Prokesch. It consisted of other ADC members, a strategic planner, a multiple winner of the “Das kann nur ein Inserat” award, and a representative of the Swiss Press Association: Axel Eckstein, Creative Director at Euro RSCG; Patrick Suter, Creative Director at Spillman Felser Leo Burnett; Thomas Städeli, Managing Director at Wirz; Isabelle Hauser, Art Director at Advico Young & Rubicam; and Sandro Rüegger, Tamedia AG/Managing Director of *Weltwoche* as of March 1, 2010.
Campaign of the Year
The winning entry will now go through the standard campaign optimization and implementation process. The ads will appear in approximately 100 newspapers and magazines starting in May 2009—about 500 times in total. That’s the kind of reach and impact that truly makes you say: Only an ad can do that.
You can find a feature article on the judging process, as well as additional photos from the jury meeting and the awards ceremony, in the print edition of *Werbewoche* 2/2010, which will be published on February 4.

Last but not least: Adam and his nightly soliloquies

An Englishwoman whose husband talks in his sleep came up with a business idea with a twist: she posts the phrases her husband utters at night online and even prints them on T-shirts.

Audio recordings are to follow soon. "My friendly-voiced English husband Adam lives in a rather colorful world when he dreams," she writes in her blog, according to Tagesanzeiger.ch. Sleeptalkinman.blogspot.com announced. She didn't want to deprive the world of the pleasure of these nocturnal chats. And lo and behold, the good Adam does not disappoint us: almost every night he delights us with funny little bits of wisdom. Has the world been waiting for this? The answer should be left open at this point. Reading the blog entries is always entertaining. And anyone who is worried about Adam's privacy can rest assured - he is well informed about his wife's blog project.

Lukas Bruhin becomes Deputy Secretary General at the Uvek

The Federal Council has appointed 41-year-old attorney Lukas Bruhin as the new Deputy Secretary General of the Department of the Environment, Transport, Energy, and Communications (UVEK).

According to SDA, the personal assistant to the head of Swiss Post replaces Hans Rudolf Dörig, who will retire at the end of May. Bruhin will return to the Uvek on June 1 after about six years at Swiss Post. The lawyer had been a personal assistant to the head of Swiss Post since September 2009 and already experienced a change of boss just three months later. The then head of Swiss Post, Michel Kunz, was removed by the Board of Directors in mid-December due to "differing views" and replaced by Postfinance head Jürg Bucher.
Hans Rudolf Dörig is retiring after 38 years in the federal administration. He spent 14 years in the General Secretariat of the Uvek.
