SRG's television stations also expanded their services for the hearing impaired last year.

A total of 15,333 hours or 26.2 percent were subtitled on the SF 1, SF zwei, SF info, TSR 1, TSR 2, RSI LA1 and RSI LA2 channels in 2009, SRG writes in a press release. In Switzerland as a whole, this corresponds to an increase of 59.4 percent. The strongest increase was recorded by sports programs.
In addition to the quantitative increase, there have also been other improvements for the hearing-impaired, SRG continues: primetime between 7pm and 10pm and all live broadcasts between midday and midnight are subtitled on all channels. SRG has also made progress with sign language broadcasts: since November 1, 2009, the main edition of the Tagesschau at 7.30 p.m. has been broadcast with sign language on the SF info channel.

TV advertising for light alcoholic beverages permitted on SRG programs from February

What was previously prohibited by law will be permitted as of February 1, 2010: TV advertising and sponsorship for low-alcohol beverages on SRG programs.

In the interests of protecting children and young people, broadcasts may not take place in the individual programs until after the main evening editions of the news programs at the earliest. Exception: No time restrictions apply to live sports broadcasts.
According to Publisuisse, all alcoholic products that are obtained exclusively through fermentation - for example beer and wine - and whose alcohol content does not exceed 15 percent by volume are permitted under the legislation.

iPad: Apple shares name with tampon

Apple's highly anticipated tablet caused quite a stir right from the start of its presentation on Wednesday evening. The buzz wasn't about technical specifications and facts, but about the name—iPad. That's because in the U.S., the new Apple device shares its name with tampons and panty liners (pads).

For North American women in particular, but not only, the moment the iPad was unveiled brought about an association with the hygiene product. Within a very short space of time, the term "iTampon" became a trending topic on Twitter at the time of the product presentation. Women in particular reacted somewhat disturbed, as the association with the tampon was so superficial. "Do any women work in the Apple marketing department?" wondered Brooke Hammerling, founder of the PR company Brew Media Relations. It seems as if hardly any surveys were carried out or feedback obtained in relation to the product name.
But it wasn't just women who were surprised. Social media and PR expert Peter Shankman also expressed his criticism to the New York Times. He said it was astonishing that Apple, which normally pays attention to every detail, had overlooked something here.
No damage to the brand
According to brand expert Oliver Schmitt from the agency viennabrand, such misfortunes in product naming are not uncommon. "It happens all the time and is of course not good for the product," Schmitt told Pressetext. At the same time, however, Apple is such a strong brand that a one-off slip-up can be tolerated. "However, if the 'pulling the wool over the eyes' gets out of hand, Apple may have to consider a different product name."
Despite the excitement, hardly anyone in the USA believes that the amusing name could ultimately cause serious damage to the iPad. "In three months, when it has established itself as hoped, nobody will remember the jokes," believes Hayes Roth, Chief Marketing Officer at Landor Associates, a brand consultancy firm. Apple probably discussed the name anyway, but chose it anyway because it fits so well into the product range. Apple itself has not yet commented on the name issue.

Alain Tanner honored with the Swisscom Honorary Leopard

Swiss director Alain Tanner will receive an honorary Swisscom Leopard at the 63rd Locarno Film Festival and will hold a public master class on the occasion.

Born in Geneva in 1929, Alain Tanner made his first feature film in 1969 with Charles mort ou vif, which immediately won the Golden Leopard at the Locarno Festival. Previous recipients include Manoel de Oliveira, Ken Loach, Ermanno Olmi, Abbas Kiarostami, Wim Wenders, Aleksandr Sokurov, Hou Hsiaohsien, Amos Gitai and, in 2009, William Friedkin. Trade association opposes device-independent fees

The Swiss Trade Association (SGV) is taking action against device-independent radio and TV fees. The Trade Association unanimously adopted a resolution to that effect.

The Federal Council is being asked to waive the device-independent "new tax" for radio and television. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) should be exempted from the obligation to pay fees, according to an SDA press release issued on Thursday. Billag, which is responsible for collecting fees, and the SRG should reduce their administrative costs in favor of lower reception fees. If other bodies could collect fees more efficiently, this task should be transferred to them.
In a report to parliament published a week ago, the Federal Council recommends that radio and TV fees should now also be paid by those who do not have a receiver. Media Minister Moritz Leuenberger explained that the programs can also be received via cell phone and computer. The SGV strongly criticized the proposal.
