The Gartenhof Medien project received the most votes among the more than 600 guests present at this year's Award Night. The site unblu.com, the project of a small web company from central Switzerland, caused a sensation in the categories in 2010 and won several prizes. The multiple category winner was also nominated for the Master. Unblu turns an existing homepage into a wall panel on which two people can surf and work online from two different locations.

Best of Swiss Web Anniversary
Best of Swiss Web 2010 is celebrating its birthday with two new categories: Display Ads and Interactive Campaigns as well as a glittering Award Night under the motto "The Web of the Pioneers, the Pioneers of the Web". The best Swiss online presences since the invention of the Internet will also be honored at the Award Night - in the anniversary category "Simply the Best".
After "The web is round" and "women wired in web", the 2010 edition is entitled "The web of the pioneers - the pioneers of the web. 10 years of Best of Swiss Web". With the anniversary category "Simply the Best", the Best of Swiss Web once again revived the classics of Swiss web history. The focus was on those domestic websites that have established themselves in their function and have become indispensable today - web projects with long-term success, Swiss identity, uniqueness, popularity or a clear pioneering role. In short, the greats of the Swiss web scene. The anniversary category provides a nostalgic and perhaps also tongue-in-cheek look back at the infancy of the www.

Swisscom Directories: Fictitious advertisements

Swisscom Directories misleads users of the new phone books with listings for fictitious companies. Anyone who calls the toll number of one of these «companies»—which, incidentally, is a toll number—is connected to a market research firm.

Swisscom wants to test the effect of the advertising. Such tests already exist in France and Germany, said Martin Lüthi from Swisscom Directories in response to an article in Friday's edition of the Quotidien Jurassien. According to SDA, a total of around 900 such advertisements have been placed in the blue telephone directories and the regional yellow pages.
The call costs are low. In addition, at the caller's request, the call is forwarded to a company that actually exists, says Lüthi. The admissibility of the campaign was first legally clarified.
Swisscom Directories now hopes that this tactic will provide neutral and factual information on advertising effectiveness. The test advertisements concern, for example, restaurants, bakeries or butchers, but not companies or professions that are important in emergencies.

Last but not least: If the biography focuses too much on the person

The biography of our Finance Minister Hans-Rudolf Merz should have been published soon - it is already 90 percent complete. But then everything turned out differently.

The research - author Philippe Reichen conducted around 70 interviews - began in early 2008. It had been agreed that Merz would authorize the biography. After he suffered a cardiac arrest in the fall of 2008, the publication date was postponed indefinitely after consultation with him. And now suddenly Mr. Merz no longer wants it: on Tuesday he unceremoniously informed the author and the publisher that the project had been stopped. The reason given is interesting: The biography was too strongly focused on his person, according to Mr. Merz. Well, that's the nature of a biography - the presentation of another person's life - in general, Mr. Federal Councillor. When asked by the SDA, his spokeswoman Tanja Kocher explained the reason for the stop in more detail: a major process of change had been set in motion during the project. The financial and economic crisis and the discussion about banking secrecy are just two of the key factors - the "biography" concept does not take enough account of these changes...

UBI: Four complaints against TV broadcasts approved

The Independent Complaints Authority for Radio and Television (UBI) upheld four complaints in 2009. They were directed against the programs «10 vor 10,» «Rundschau,» and «SF bi de Lüt,» as well as an adult program on a private broadcaster.

The criticized broadcasts focused on health and health policy issues such as swine flu, insulin, late-term abortions, surreptitious advertising for tobacco products and the influence of the pharmaceutical lobby, as the UBI writes in a statement, according to SDA. The UBI had already provided information on the four approved complaints during the course of the year. The complaint against the program "SF bi de Lüt - Heimspiel" concerned the handling of live fish. According to the UBI, these were instrumentalized in the entertainment programme as toys in a game of catch.
The complaint against the "Rundschau" concerned a report about a foster child. The UBI came to the conclusion that the report had violated the requirement of fairness because the audience had not been able to form its own opinion on the supervisory procedure discussed in the report. The Federal Supreme Court upheld this decision.
The UBI also found a violation of the principle of objectivity in connection with a "10 to 10" report on the topic of "Workers from the EU". According to the UBI, key facts were conveyed incorrectly to the audience. In the case of an erotic program on "Schweiz 5", the UBI considered the offence of endangering public morality to be fulfilled.
News magazine "10 to 10" most frequently criticized
The appeal body sets the broadcasters concerned a deadline of 30 days in each case to inform it of the precautions taken against future violations of the provisions of programming law. The UBI is satisfied with the measures taken in the above-mentioned cases. Among other things, Swiss Television supplemented its guidelines on "filming with animals". In 2009, 16 new complaints were received. This is nine fewer than in the previous year. With one exception, only SRG broadcasts were the subject of complaints. The news magazine "10 vor 10" was the most frequently complained about program.

Radio DRS is increasingly listened to on the Internet or as a podcast

More and more people are listening to Swiss Radio DRS online or downloading podcasts of its programs.

DRS Musikwelle, DRS 4 News and DRS Virus all made gains in 2009, according to SDA at the annual media conference in Zurich on Thursday. SR DRS was able to maintain its "solid market position" in 2009. On a weekly average, the six DRS radio programs reached around 90 percent of the German-speaking Swiss population. Audiences increasingly want to be able to choose when and where they want to listen to their favorite programs, it was said at the media orientation. The younger generation in particular is making increasing use of audio-on-demand services and podcasts, but is using "traditional radio" less. According to DRS statistics, 24 million podcasts were downloaded last year. This is 66,000 a day and 130 percent more than in the previous year. The most successful radio podcast was the program "Echo der Zeit", which was downloaded around 9600 times a day.
DRS Musikwelle is steadily gaining an audience
Despite the closure of the Beromünster medium-wave station at the end of 2008, the popular DRS Musikwelle has steadily increased its audience. The market share is 4.1 percent - this means that over 300,000 people tune in to DRS Musikwelle every day. Over 40 percent of them listen to the program on digital radio (DAB/DAB+).
The 24-hour news program DRS 4 News, which was introduced in 2007, has found its regular audience with over 300,000 listeners, it said.

Study: TV and web are increasingly used in parallel

The simultaneous use of television and the Internet is steadily increasing. More and more people are engaging in multitasking viewing behavior, either watching TV directly on their computers while switching between browser windows or using the web at the same time as they enjoy traditional TV.

The latest Nielsen figures confirm this trend. According to these figures, 59% of respondents already use TV and the internet at the same time. The time spans in which the two media are used in parallel have also increased by 35% within a year and now average three hours and 30 minutes per month.
For programme makers, who are even more concerned about their audience due to such figures, the restless user behavior is unlikely to be very pleasing. New challenges may also arise for advertisers. "If attention immediately shifts from a TV commercial to the internet, this is certainly problematic for advertisers and broadcasters," Andreas Vlasic, Managing Director of the Media Institute in Ludwigshafen, told Pressetext. Because what is being sold is the viewer's attention. "If this is elsewhere, you really do have to question the efficiency of advertising communication," says Vlasic. The media expert does not believe that the new media usage behavior will cause more stress and anxiety for consumers themselves with regard to younger generations. "They are used to such usage processes because they have been socialized with the diversity of digital media from an early age. Older users, however, could become stressed more quickly."
Internet users more restless than TV users
The Nielsen study shows that internet users are more restless than TV users. While 34% of web users switch on the TV at the same time as surfing, only 3.1% of TV viewers use the Internet at the same time. However, the challenge that web users in particular pose to advertisers can also be seen as an opportunity. For example, cross-media campaigns could become more important as a result.

Promotional campaign by Australian tourism authority causes uproar

A stressed-out kangaroo on a street in Los Angeles has caused a stir in Australia. Even Prime Minister Kevin Rudd weighed in on Thursday on the discussion surrounding what appears to be a failed publicity stunt by the Australian Tourism Board.

According to SDA, the company had placed a cage with a kangaroo on a busy street in the celebrity district of Beverly Hills in Los Angeles in order to promote vacations Down Under in the USA. A video on the internet portal YouTube shows the animal staggering back and forth in the cage during the campaign in January. It is obviously completely confused and stressed.
He had not seen the video, but had heard reports about it, said Prime Minister Rudd. He was very concerned about it and thought it was quite wrong. The Australian national symbol must be protected. The father of animal welfare icon Steve Irwin also spoke out against the action. "It's a terrible image of Australia that goes around the world when a kangaroo is treated like this," explained Bob Irwin, whose son was killed by a ray while filming on the Great Barrier Reef in September 2006.
The tourism authority, on the other hand, defended itself by saying that the ten-year-old kangaroo Fesnick had only been on display for four hours.
