Genesis: Magazine for the new economy launched

The publishing house Swiss Businesspress is expanding its business reporting with a new magazine. "Genesis- das Magazin für die Neue Wirtschaft" will be launched at the beginning of April, initially as a supplement to the Unternehmerzeitung (UZ). The magazine is aimed at SMEs and provides information on developments and trends in the clean-tech sector.

"With Genesis, we want to show where the innovative power of industry and science lies dormant and where visionary ideas are turned into action," Remo Kuhn, publisher of UZ and CEO of Swiss Businesspress, is quoted as saying in a press release. The first issue on April 2 is dedicated to Bertrand Piccard, among others, who uses the Solar Impulse project to demonstrate the opportunities and limitations of solar technology. Genesis is published four times a year with a circulation of 20,000 copies as a supplement to the Unternehmerzeitung.

AZ Medien: Third profit slump in a row in 2009

AZ Medien AG, publisher of the Aargauer Zeitung, posted a loss of 14.8 million Swiss francs in 2009, marking its third consecutive year of declining profits. The media company was hit particularly hard by a decline in job advertisements and the advertising market. A round of cost-cutting measures was only able to offset two-thirds of the loss.

The total losses at Group level amounted to CHF 40 million, as AZ Medien announced on Monday. Turnover rose by 19.5 percent compared to the previous year to 240.7 million francs. However, the figures are not comparable with the previous year, as the Solothurn-based Vogt-Schild-Holding was included for the first time. AZ Medien acquired the publisher of the Solothurner Zeitung in the spring. This acquisition was the largest investment in the past year, as the company stated.
Money also flowed into the conversion of the old customer printing plant in Aarau Telli into a media center. Due to low earnings, AZ Medien initiated a round of savings in June. In the process, 65 jobs were cut at AZ Medien alone. No figures were published for cost-cutting measures at Vogt-Schild-Holding.
AZ Medien suffered its third profit slump in a row. In 2008, profits plummeted by 89 percent to 1.2 million francs. Even then, 30 jobs had been cut. In 2007, profits fell by 24.7 percent.

Will Apple soon introduce a mobile advertising platform?

According to a report by the online news portal Media Post, Apple is working full steam ahead on a mobile advertising platform. The new, customizable system, known as iAd, could be unveiled to the public as early as April 7.

This means that the new offer would be presented just four days after the iPad was launched. This makes strategic sense, as the advertising industry has long since expressed keen interest in the new advertising space. More detailed information on Apple's new advertising platform is not yet known. However, Media Post assumes that iAd will be a kind of further development of the mobile advertising system of the ad seller Quattro Wireless, which was acquired in January for almost 300 million dollars. According to the industry service Pressetext.ch, special features could include, for example, advertisements that can be sent to users based on their current geographical location. However, Google currently holds the patent for the latter function in the mobile advertising sector. The internet company, which acquired Apple's direct competitor AdMob shortly before Apple took over Quattro, is also likely to be the iPad manufacturer's toughest opponent.

IP Multimedia: Advertising burner and spot combined

Goldbach Media subsidiary IP Multimedia has launched a new form of advertising for the Swiss TV market. This involves a seamless transition from the ad break to the customer's TV spot.

The electronic media marketer has already implemented the new form of advertising for its client Ricola. The Move advertising hit was broadcast for the first time in November 2009 on ProSieben, RTL, RTL II and VOX in Switzerland. The advertising bumper is blown up like a bubble of chewing gum and bursts, revealing the new spot for the herbal chewing gum from the background. The placement of the advertising burst move was carried out by selecting specific environments according to the customer's wishes. The entire ad had a length of 14 seconds.

Firtig: The holidays can come

Copywriter Simon Smit and journalist Marco Rüegg have launched «Firtig»: the only print newspaper in the city of Zurich that is published on holidays. The paper will make its debut on Good Friday.

Over the past few weeks, Simon Smit and Marco Rüegg have filled 32 pages with reading material with the help of volunteer writers, graphic designers, photographers and illustrators. For the time being, it's not about making money, but about implementing a good idea and making people happy, says editor Simon Smit. The first issue features topics such as "Alice in Rüebliland: We (re)search the nightlife of our favorite neighboring canton" or "An avowed racist ran for municipal council in Langnau. A visit to the Führerbunker". The publication has a print run of 3,000 copies, is printed on newsprint and will be delivered CO2-neutral to cafés throughout the city of Zurich during Maundy Thursday and Good Friday.

USA: First edition of the iPad already sold out

Apple's iPad tablet computer is in high demand. The first edition of the tablet computer is already completely sold out. However, figures on iPad orders are not yet available.

Customers in the USA have been able to pre-order the new computer from Apple for a good two weeks and either pick it up directly from a store or have it sent to them from April 3. The iPad will also go on sale in Switzerland at the end of April.

Last but not least: About mathematical crochet adventures

Last weekend, Thebookseller.com once again awarded the Diagram Prize. The online bookstore awards this prize to the most bizarre book titles. This year, the honor went to Latvian mathematician Daina Taimina. She received the award for her fascinating treatise "Crocheting Adventures with Hyperbolic Planes".

Anyone who thinks that crocheting has nothing to do with mathematics is wrong. Hyperbolic geometry is all about surfaces that are difficult to represent using conventional methods - unless you crochet them. Insanely promising! In any case, the bookseller is relieved that such a challenging work has won. Bookseller columnist Horace Bent already feared that in times of crisis, publishers would concentrate on book titles that sell particularly well - such as biographies of celebrities. Clearly, the competition has once again proven that the award-winning works - even if the focus is on the oddity - are always challenging reading material.

Here is a small selection of the titles that have won awards since 1978:

  • 1983: The theory of longitudinal rolling
  • 1996: Greek rural letter carriers and the numbers of their canceled postmarks
  • 2004: Make your horse bombproof
  • 2005: People who don't know they are dead: How they develop an affection for unsuspecting observers and what to do about it

Catholic Church launches national image campaign

The Catholic Church is launching a national poster campaign aimed at improving its image. The slogan is «More Good News.».

This is what the Sonntag newspaper writes in its current edition. The media commission of the Swiss Bishops' Conference (SBK) is said to be behind the campaign. The large-scale media offensive is being launched with 5,000 posters throughout Switzerland. The posters will be sent to all 2,000 parishes and displayed in church showcases and at church gates until May 16. Daniel Kosch, General Secretary of the Roman Catholic Central Conference, told Sonntag that they are aware that the campaign could be sensitive and that they have to consider whether it could come across as cynical. But it is important to better convey the church's positive basic message to the public.
The motif was created by Swiss designer Beda Achermann. He works for the Catholic Church for God's reward, i.e. free of charge, as Sonntag knows. In addition to the poster campaign, the Catholic Church is also fighting for a better image on the Internet: the new website Mehr-good-news.ch will be launched in mid-April. Parishes and church members can post good news online there.

Last but not least: The British are crazy

More and more people in the United Kingdom are contracting syphilis. It’s clear that someone has to be blamed. And the British tabloid press has already found a culprit: Facebook is the scapegoat.

More and more young people are meeting up online and then having unprotected fun with their Facebook acquaintances. The assumption is said to be based on a health expert from Teesside - Peter Kelly, Director of Public Health in the North East of England, believes he can establish a link between the increased number of sexually transmitted diseases and the popularity of Facebook. And, as you would expect, his claims have been further hyped by the British tabloid media with headlines such as "Facebook causes syphilis outbreak". At least Facebook users don't have to worry too much about who they are dating. Apparently, users on social networks show their true personality and not distorted ideal images - at least that's the conclusion reached by psychologists from the universities of Mainz and Münster in a study, according to Pressetext...whether personal medical history, including syphilis and the like, is also part of the true personality remains an open question.

Imprint: Quality journalism must be a priority for media companies

Media companies in Switzerland should give top priority to their core mission: quality journalism. This is what the delegates’ assembly of the journalists’ organization Impressum called for in a resolution adopted on Friday.

The economic crisis and structural changes in the media have had consequences that jeopardize the independence, quality and social function of the media, Impressum notes with concern in a communiqué, according to SDA. Editorial budgets and budgets for assignments to freelancers are being slashed. This prevents high-quality and independent reporting. Cooperation between the media is restricting the diversity of opinion. There is a tendency to mix advertising and information for economic reasons. The delegates of Switzerland's largest journalists' organization are therefore calling on the editors-in-chief to assume their journalistic responsibility and enforce it against the media companies.
Cooperation between media - even within the same media groups -, convergence and the trend towards newsrooms should not lead to different media publishing the same opinions and perspectives.
Budgets for assignments to independent freelance journalists should not be cut any further. And multiple exploitation without compensation must be stopped. The "Declaration of Duties and Rights of Journalists" must be adhered to.

Football World Cup 2010: No higher charges for restaurateurs than for Euro 08

Restaurant and bar owners who set up televisions for their guests in their establishments during the 2010 World Cup do not have to pay Suisa any more fees than they did during Euro 2008.

According to Gastro Suisse, this was decided by the Federal Arbitration Commission. The Arbitration Commission has extended the current tariff of the copyright company Suisa until the end of 2013, Gastro Suisse wrote in a statement on Friday evening, according to SDA. According to the industry association, it was defending itself against the massive increases demanded by the collecting societies.
The screens in the restaurants may not be larger than three meters diagonally. According to Gastro Suisse, the arbitration committee's decision was only available in verbal form on Friday. The 2010 FIFA World Cup will take place in South Africa from June 11 to July 11.
