Media apparently fear for location attractiveness

At the end of 2015, Swiss media reported less frequently and more critically on the local economy. They are also increasingly questioning Switzerland’s attractiveness as a business location, according to the Reputation Monitor published by the Research Institute for Public Affairs and Society (Fög).

According to Fög, the fact that economic topics took a back seat is due to the fact that other events received a lot of attention: For example, the parliamentary and Federal Council elections in Switzerland, but also the global refugee crisis, the conflict in Syria or the terrorist attacks in Paris.

When reports did come out about the economy, they were more often about location issues than before. In particular in connection with the implementation of the mass immigration initiative, there were increasing warnings of a threat to Switzerland as a business location. According to the study, the latest job-cutting plans - at Alstom, for example - underpinned the view that Switzerland as a business location could increasingly come under scrutiny in the future.

This is shown by the Reputation Monitor Economy published on Wednesday. It is compiled by the Research Institute for Public and Society (Fög) of the University of Zurich and the consulting firm Commslab.

The right decision through strategy and analysis

Professional football and forex trading have a lot in common. Maxomedia stages these similarities in a campaign for Manchester United sponsor Swissquote.

Nowadays, a successful football manager does not simply rely on his gut feeling. Every player, every potential and every possible tactic is precisely measured and analyzed thanks to innovative technology gadgets. Based on this, the decision is made on which players to bet on and with which strategy to go into the game.

It's the same with forex trading. Thanks to Swissquote's analysis tools and platforms, you don't even have to be a van Gaal to do it. They calculate strategies and show you the possibilities in Forex trading. Now it's just a matter of making the right decision: Namely, to trade.

This is also illustrated by the latest campaign: Take the lead. It motivates new and existing customers to take their success into their own hands. For the campaign visuals, Maxomedia was allowed to meet Manchester's world-class players on location for the shoot.

Swissquote is the official partner of Manchester United for Forex and online financial trading. The two companies share many common values. The bridge is formed in the campaign by original quotes from the prominent testimonials around the top club.

Open Government Data Portal renewed

The new Swiss portal for Open Government Data (OGD) went live today. It was designed and implemented by Liip as part of a project that spanned several months.

The previous pilot portal Opendata.admin.ch, which was also created by Liip, will be replaced by the new portal Opendata.swiss replaced. It is hosted by Begasoft and thus complies with federal guidelines, according to a statement on Tuesday.

On the portal operated by the Federal Archives, the Confederation, cantons, municipalities and other organizations offer their freely available data centrally. It is a measure of the Open Government Data Strategy Switzerland 2014-2018.

The most important changes

In contrast to the pilot portal Opendata.admin.ch, which had been in operation since 2013, Swiss authorities and administration-related organizations publish their data on the new portal under uniform terms of use, the statement continues. This should make it easier for interested parties to reuse the data. Based on the experience gained from the pilot operation, the data catalog and the search function have also been improved.

Additional data providers are also present on the new portal (including the SBB, the Canton of Geneva and the Library at Guisanplatz). In total, 17 organizations now offer more than 500 data sets on the portal from a wide variety of subject areas, such as health, transport or the environment. The organizations that already had data on Opendata.admin.ch are also on Opendata.swiss represented. The data offering is now to be expanded on an ongoing basis.

Google knocks Apple off its stock market throne

Investors are celebrating the quarterly results from Google's parent company, Alphabet. Following a sharp rise in its stock price, the company surpassed Apple in after-hours trading on Monday and became the world's most valuable publicly traded company.

Alphabet shares shot up by over eight percent, catapulting its market capitalization to around 570 billion dollars. The market capitalization of the previous stock market champion Apple was thus overtaken, at least outside official trading hours.

Alphabet surprised the stock market positively with its quarterly figures. From October to December, the surplus rose from 4.68 to 4.92 billion dollars year-on-year, as Alphabet announced on Monday after the close of the US stock exchange.

Turnover increased by 18% to 21.33 billion dollars. This exceeded analysts' forecasts. The share price initially rose by over eight percent after the close of trading.

The figures were particularly eagerly awaited as this is the first annual report in a new Group structure. Advertising revenue from the core business of the subsidiary Google - which, in addition to the search engine of the same name and the mail hoster Gmail, also includes the video platform YouTube and the mobile operating system Android - climbed by 17 percent to 19.08 billion dollars compared to the previous year.

The Group surprisingly announced its transformation into an Alphabet holding company in August and completed it at the beginning of October. The new accounting method that has now been introduced has made it clear for the first time how the company is performing in promising business areas such as the robot car and internet drone divisions.

Last year, these experiments only generated sales of 448 million dollars and resulted in a loss of 3.57 billion dollars. (SDA)

Whatsapp has one billion users

The messaging service WhatsApp has surpassed the one-billion-user mark. Co-founder and CEO Jan Koum announced this in a Facebook post early Tuesday morning.

Facebook acquired Whatsapp in 2014 for a total of over 22 billion dollars. At the time, the SMS alternative had just over 450 million users. At the time, Facebook assured that Whatsapp would be able to operate largely independently under the new corporate umbrella and that user data would remain separate.

Koum went on to say that Whatsapp currently sends 42 billion messages per day. Users also send 1.6 billion photos and 250 million videos every day.

Internet-based text messaging services have replaced traditional SMS for many users with the rise of smartphones and fast mobile data networks. Whatsapp was the first of these services to reach the one billion customer mark.

Last but not least: That's the top

A day in the mountains is balm for the heart and soul - if it weren't for the advertising everywhere, says the IG Plakat Raum Gesellschaft. That's why the association publishes a brochure with ski resorts where "there is no advertising in front of the snow-covered mountains."

The IG Plakat Raum Gesellschaft wants a clear view of the powder snow, the steel-blue sky and the white-powdered mountains. Huge advertising spaces at the valley and mountain stations, cars flown in by helicopter at the edge of the slopes or even 34-metre-long Toblerone wrappers covering ski lifts are a thorn in the side of the association.

Fortunately, there are a few Swiss ski resorts that take a cautious approach to advertising, writes the association in a press release on Tuesday. The IG Plakat Raum Gesellschaft is now promoting these ski resorts itself - in the form of a discreetly snow-white and brightly colored brochure. Advertisers who are looking for a break away from their everyday working life can find it here download free of charge. (sis)

Roger de Weck comments on redundancies at RSI

In Ticino, the layoff of 18 employees at the Ticino television station RSI has been making headlines for days. Labor unions have sharply criticized management’s methods. On Monday, SRG Director General Roger de Weck met with the RSI staff in Lugano Besso.

The visit by de Weck had been planned for some time, RSI announced in a communiqué on Monday evening. However, the Director General of SRG SSR also used the visit to comment on current events at RSI.

Last week, the Syndicom trade union had criticized the alleged lack of transparency in the dismissal of the employees, some of whom had been with the company for many years. They were allegedly asked to vacate their desks immediately - at the same time, e-mail accounts and parking cards were blocked, the Imprint union also reported last week. Long-time employees were treated like delinquents, the media union said.

Denial and insight

RSI director Maurizio Canetta, in a five-minute video published on the RSI site, denied the allegations. They are untruths that he firmly rejects, Canetta said. In the RSI program Modem, however, he then also admitted mistakes in the communication of the dismissals at the end of last week.

On Monday, Roger de Weck, together with RSI director Canetta, announced that they would analyze the discomfort of the Ticino staff in detail so that the dialogue and corporate culture could be strengthened again.

De Weck also justified the cost-cutting measures of CHF 40 million at SRG SSR, which were due to the lack of income from value-added tax and the higher fee share of regional stations. At the same time, the Director General praised RSI as the most productive enterprise unit, which also received the highest percentage of audience approval.

Ticino benefits from financial equalization

In Italian-speaking Switzerland, RSI is the second-largest employer after the canton - it employs over 1,000 people. In terms of population, Italian-speaking Switzerland is now a major beneficiary of financial equalization by language community in the public service sector.

Two television stations, three radio stations and a comprehensive Internet platform - with RSI, Italian-speaking Switzerland has one of the highest media densities in all of Europe. (SDA)
