"Friendly Music": YouTube and Rumblefish launch soundtrack service

Google's video portal YouTube and the licensing provider Rumblefish have announced a joint music service. Starting next week, users will be able to create their own soundtracks for their video productions on «Friendly Music»—legally.

Clips in which copyrighted music is used without a corresponding license, however, will continue to be removed from the site. According to the press release, the Friendly Music license allows a song to be used "forever" in a YouTube video for the price of 1.99 dollars.
From June 29, around 35,000 tracks by independent artists will be available to YouTube producers to incorporate into their videos. The selection will be expanded daily over the coming months to include well-known bands. Friendly Music users download purchased songs in MP3 format. They can edit the tracks, upload them to YouTube and incorporate them into a video. The license, which confirms the legal use of the music in the video, is sent to the buyer by e-mail.
The use and distribution of the tracks can be controlled using special IDs that are linked to the licenses and pieces of music. The Friendly Music catalog is available exclusively for non-commercial and non-profit purposes. The licenses come directly from the individual artists or labels. Users can browse the Friendly Music database according to various criteria, search specifically or browse through playlists to find the right soundtrack for their video. Rumblefish also offers one selected song per week as a free download.

Last but not least: Sepp Blatter flies for nothing

FIFA is treating itself to two luxury jets for the World Cup in South Africa to shuttle between the host cities. Of course, this isn't exactly cheap—it's reportedly costing the federation two million francs.

If it were up to the South African low-cost airline Kulula, these expenses could be avoided. Fifa President Sepp Blatter could even fly for free. In full-page newspaper advertisements, the company offered the Swiss free flights on the Kulula route network, according to the Handelszeitung: "We offer affordable flights for everyone except Sepp Blatter. He can fly for free," it said. Wherever he needed to go in the country under the best possible conditions: He should send an email to [email protected] and he would be flown for free. Last Sunday, a new advertisement from Kulula read: "It's official. Sepp Blatter is flying with us." It was immediately qualified: "Ok, it's not exactly the Sepp Blatter we were expecting, but a promise is a promise." No, it really wasn't the Sepp we were expecting: the lucky man who gets to fly for free is a dog, a Boston terrier to be precise, who lives in Cape Town. According to the airline, they are proud to have him on board. "Because every Sepp Blatter is a friend of ours."

Hacker justifies himself for cracking Obama's Twitter account

He had merely wanted to draw attention to weaknesses in the security of social networks. According to SDA, the accused, who called himself "Hacker Croll" on the Internet, was arrested by French investigators together with officers from the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) at the end of March. He faces up to two years in prison for hacking into computer systems. Among other things, he was able to gain access to the Twitter account of US singer Britney Spears and is also said to have penetrated the Facebook Internet platform and e-mail services such as Google's G-Mail.
Carelessness of many computer users exploited
According to the public prosecutor's office, the hacker exploited the carelessness of many computer users who create passwords from the names of relatives or pets, for example. The Frenchman specifically searched for such data and used it to try out various password combinations. He cracked Twitter by finding out passwords for the administrators' accounts, he said in court. It was not his intention to cause destruction or harm anyone, the computer crack assured the court.
He could have done it, but that would not have been in line with his ethics. He just wanted to show that "the weak link in computer security is not the machine, but the human being". He also wanted to make Internet users aware of the importance of choosing a secure password.
