DCTP plans its own TV channel

Program provider DCTP plans to launch its own television channel on January 1, 2011. DCTP.TV will broadcast a high-quality 24-hour program on topics from culture, society, history and science, DCTP legal advisor Paul Leo Giani told the industry service Medienbote.

The channel will be accompanied by an extensive on-demand service, which viewers can use to obtain in-depth information on the topics shown. "We are responding to the changing usage habits of audiences, who are actively and flexibly seeking out the content they want," explained Giani.
Individual topics are to be explored in a multifaceted and detailed manner in series lasting several hours. The model is the four-hour theme nights hosted by DCTP, which Vox broadcasts with great success during prime time on Saturday evenings.
The programs will be supplied by DCTP as well as partners such as Spiegel TV, Süddeutsche Zeitung TV, NZZ TV and BBC Worldwide, and the free TV channel will be financed by advertising and sponsorship. The web TV service Dctp.tv, which was launched in May, is to be linked to the TV channel.

Last but not least: Google's ultimate solution to the privacy problem

Google is often criticized - user privacy is not guaranteed, it is said. But anyone who thinks that the company's CEO, Eric Schmidt, is not aware of this problem is completely wrong.

According to Tagesanzeiger.ch, he told the Wall Street Journal that society does not understand "what happens when everything is available, recognizable and can be recorded by anyone at any time". Society "really needs to think about these things". But no, these are not just empty words. Mr. Schmidt also presents THE solution: young users of social networks and other online services must be given the opportunity to establish a new identity from a certain age. He wants young people to be able to change their name when they reach the age of majority. This would prevent youthful sins published on the Internet, such as drunken parties or topless photos, from having a negative impact on later professional life. If that's not a solid approach. How serious the gentleman is about this proposal is left open at this point. In light of the fact that, according to media reports, Google is working on ensuring that photos, status updates and other content from Facebook users can be found immediately via the search engine, Schmidt's words seem a little absurd.

SF: Internet forums closed due to harassment

On the «Club» and «Arena» internet forums, the discussion turned nasty: insults and racist remarks overshadowed the other posts.

And so SF pulled the emergency brake in January ("Club") and June ("Arena"): viewers can no longer express their opinions online. The TV magazines Tele and TV-Star report this in their latest issues. SF argues: "We don't want to offer these people an additional platform." The "Club" forum will remain closed until further notice. At "Arena", the decision was made to reopen a moderated - i.e. controlled - forum after the summer break.

Online videos conquer the TV screen

This is the conclusion of a recent report by the US market research company In-Stat, which predicts an extremely rosy future for the trend towards merging web videos and TV usage and a hefty total turnover of 17 billion dollars for the corresponding providers.
Companies have long since recognized that the combination of online videos and conventional TV screens represents a very promising business area for the future from an economic perspective. "Moving images are the trend on the web par excellence. As far as the development of media convergence - in this case the merging of TV and the web - is concerned, the figures speak for themselves," states Google spokesperson Stefan Keuchel when asked by Pressetext.
In addition to special solutions for the company's own video portal, such as YouTube XL, which has been specially designed for the playback of web video clips on larger screens, the "Google TV" platform presented at the end of May is expected to provide a useful fusion of television and the internet. According to the In-Stat report, growth in the online video TV sector is being driven by various factors. One key aspect is the number of web-enabled TV sets, which is expected to climb from 70 million in 2009 to 237 million in 2014. The extent of fast broadband Internet connections in consumers' households, which is forecast to almost triple in the next five years, is also of crucial importance here.
