Mitlinks: Longstanding CEO of Berlin.de brought on board

Mitlinks will be collaborating with Robert Daubner’s consulting firm going forward. Daubner served as CEO of Berlin.de for many years before founding M&M GmbH in the summer of 2010. Mitlinks hopes that this partnership will enable it to better support Swiss publishers in commercializing their offerings and developing new formats.

Robert Daubner was CEO of Berlinonline KG from 2002 to 2010. This is responsible for the operation of the portals Berlin.de, Verlin-online.de and numerous sites of the Berliner Verlag. These include the online formats of the Berliner Zeitung, the Berliner Kurier, the Berliner Abendblatt and the city magazine Tip Berlin.
With the entry of the global media group Mecom Group in 2007, Daubner was also responsible for all online activities in Germany as Head of Digital Germany. The development and implementation of digital publishing strategies in the areas of B2B and B2C for regional, national and international formats as well as the restructuring, realignment and ROI optimization of media and publishing companies on a national and European scale were the focus of his work.
In summer 2010, Robert Daubner left Berlinonline KG and founded M&M GmbH, which specializes in consulting for media companies. His clients include publishing houses and broadcasting chains such as the Pro7 Group.

Election campaign donations: Press Council agrees with Tages-Anzeiger

The Swiss Press Council has rejected a complaint by Thurgau SVP National Councillor Peter Spuhler and his wife Daniela Spuhler-Hoffmann against the Tages-Anzeiger.

In February, before the municipal elections in the city of Zurich, the Tages-Anzeiger reported that Daniela Spuhler-Hoffmann, herself a member of the SVP, was supporting city councillor Andres Türler (FDP) in the election campaign and thus a candidate from the political competition. The journalist asked Daniela Spuhler about her reasons. He asked whether the support beyond party lines could possibly have business reasons: on the one hand, Türler heads the industrial companies and thus the transport companies of the city of Zurich. On the other hand, Spuhler's company Stadler Rail is involved in the tender for a new generation of streetcars in Zurich. Spuhler-Hoffmann clearly contradicted this.
According to the Press Council, it was permissible to ask these questions. The rules of professional ethics had not been violated. There was also no damage to reputation. "Ms. Spuhler was given the opportunity to express herself, which she did confidently", the press release from Tuesday states. The questions were also embedded in a larger political context and supplemented with statements from various camps. Only the presentation of the report with a large photo of the Spuhler-Hoffmann couple was considered questionable by the Press Council. However, such weightings were at the discretion of the editorial team. It therefore rejected the complaint.

Nielsen: Advertising market grows in the first half of the year

The advertising market has rebounded strongly. In the first half of 2010, advertisers worldwide spent nearly 13 percent, or $238 billion, more than in the same period of 2009. This growth was seen in 35 out of a total of 37 countries, as market researchers at Nielsen point out.

Both radio and newspapers recorded healthy growth in the first six months of 2010. Television remains the frontrunner among advertising media. The upturn was driven in particular by the boom in Latin America and Asia. In Latin America, expenditure shot up by 44.5% in the first half of 2010. The Middle East and Africa region followed in second place with an increase of 23.8%.
In contrast, growth in North America and Europe was still comparatively subdued at 4.7% and 8.5% respectively. In France, the market grew by 11.6%, in the United Kingdom (UK) by 10.7% and in Germany by 9.6%. Exceptions were Spain, where the advertising market remained unchanged, and Ireland, where the market actually shrank by 3%.

Zürichsee Druckereien AG to be sold

Zürichsee Medien AG (ZSM), headquartered in Stäfa, is divesting another business unit: Chairman of the Board of Directors Theodor Gut is selling not only the Zürichsee-Zeitung but also Zürichsee Druckereien AG.

Gut confirmed a corresponding report by Kleinreport on Tuesday. He was looking for a suitable buyer because there was no successor for the printing company within the family. For the same reason, he had also sold the Zürichsee-Zeitung to the Zurich media house Tamedia. The first interested parties are already in place, Gut told the SDA news agency. Nothing should change for customers and suppliers for the time being.
The sale of the printing plant has nothing to do with the Zürichsee-Zeitung. The daily newspaper has been produced at the Oetwil am See printing center (DZO) for years. Zürichsee Druckereien AG did not print newspapers, but concentrated on pre-press for magazines, brochures, business cards and the like. It was also involved in the cartography company Orell Füssli Kartographie, which produces hiking, biking and school maps.

Fake user reviews on shopping portal

Deutsche Telekom's online shopping portal, T-Online, apparently had a copywriting agency create customer reviews. The company wanted to use them to enhance the site.

The agency, which officially specializes in optimizing product descriptions, delivered around 1000 texts between 80 and 180 words long. Dozens of authors wrote paid texts for the portal about a washing machine ("I wouldn't have thought that so much had changed"), about a Canon camera ("Canon has taken a big step forward here"), about an ice cream maker ("It was child's play") and other products. In a briefing, the copywriters were precisely instructed to create realistic product reviews that were as authentic as possible, as reported by Der Spiegel. Negative ratings were also allowed so that everything appeared genuine. Telekom explained that "an overzealous service provider" had commissioned the text agency to create user reviews. The company was not aware of the order and the texts have since been deleted.

Two German journalists arrested in Iran

Two German journalists have been arrested in Iran. This is because they conducted an interview with the son of Sakine Mohammadi Ashtiani, an Iranian woman sentenced to death by stoning.

This was confirmed by Iranian public prosecutor Gholam Hussein Mohseni Edscheie to local media on Monday. The detainees are apparently a photographer and a reporter for a print medium. According to unofficial Iranian sources, they are said to work for the newspaper "Bild am Sonntag".
The interview had taken place on Sunday afternoon in the office of Ashtiani's lawyer, according to Mina Ahadi, the spokesperson for the Committee Against Stoning, who lives in Germany. Ahadi was taking part in the interview via telephone conference when one of the journalists suddenly shouted "What's going on here?" and then told her he had to hang up.
Since then, she has not been able to contact the journalists, Ashtiani's son or the lawyer. The Federal Foreign Office had confirmed that it was following up information about the arrest of German journalists "at full speed".
