New York advertises with posters for more tolerance

Following several attacks on gay people and immigrants, New York City wants to promote greater tolerance. To that end, the slogan «Love Love. Hate Hate» was created.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg and City Council Speaker Christine Quinn presented the new campaign. The posters with the slogan will be displayed at numerous bus stops and telephone booths from next week. This was announced by Bloomberg's office according to SDA. A short video is also planned to be shown on two television channels and on mini-screens in cabs.
There have been several cases of homophobic and racially motivated violence in recent weeks and months, said Quinn, who is open about her homosexuality.

New agency network ComUnity.pro founded

Eighteen owner-managed and independent PR agencies from Europe and the Middle East have joined forces to form the ComUnity.pro network. Jenni Kommunikation represents Switzerland.

ComUnity.pro specializes in strategic communication in high-tech markets, but also has solid public relations experience in other areas. According to the press release, the network consists of renowned agencies in Austria, Belgium, Croatia, France, Germany, Hungary, Dubai, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the UK. The network was unofficially founded in September 2009 to support a European manufacturers' association in the ICT sector with its communications. After a year in which the network was able to acquire several renowned international customers, it has now been formally founded in Brussels.
Instead of relying on relationships or high membership fees when selecting the individual agencies, the sole criterion chosen was reputation with the media in the respective country. "Local journalists are undoubtedly the most neutral jury in such decisions," says Marc Henri De Bruyne, CEO of ComUnity.pro and the Belgian member agency Vademecom. "Media representatives know better than anyone else which PR agency offers relevant content and is characterized by openness and respect in relationships."
All agencies work purely on a project basis and make transparent offers for specific campaigns. If required, clients have a central contact person in Brussels who coordinates all local experts and thus relieves the client of the burden of managing multiple agencies.

Italy: State television suspends TV presenter critical of Berlusconi

The Italian public broadcaster Rai has suspended the well-known host Michele Santoro, who is known for his sharp criticism of Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi.

The presenter of the political magazine Anno Zero was relieved of all duties for ten days on Wednesday and will not receive any pay during this time.officially, the suspension was imposed as a disciplinary measure for insulting Rai director Mauro Masi during a program on September 22. However, numerous media assume that Santoro was to be punished for his criticism of Berlusconi.
This is a disciplinary measure of unprecedented severity, Santoro is quoted as saying by the SDA. He announced that he would take legal action against it in "all possible instances". Santoro's ten-day ban is to apply from next Monday and will lead to the cancellation of two editions of his political magazine show on the Rai Due channel.
The political magazine Anno Zero, which mixes panel discussions with political reports, satirical caricatures and biting commentary on the trials against Berlusconi on Thursday evenings, regularly achieves ratings of 20 percent. Berlusconi, who has several loyal members on the board of directors of Rai, has repeatedly criticized Santoro's programme as biased.

Novo Media markets Servus TV

Novo Media, the new company founded by former Cinecom CEO Matthias Luchsinger, is now exclusively marketing the Austrian digital private broadcaster Servus TV in Switzerland.

Servus TV, a subsidiary of Red Bull Media House, has already been working with Matthias Luchsinger on a mandate basis for some time, according to a press release. Novo Media will immediately start with the marketing preparations for 2010/11. Sales and bookings for Servus TV will start on October 15 and can be booked immediately.
The Zurich agency Novo Media is regarded as a newcomer in the scene, the statement continues. The start-up's strategy is clearly defined: "Novo Media will be the Swiss House of Digital Brands. We want to establish ourselves as the third force in the Swiss marketing scene," Luchsinger is quoted as saying. "Other marketers focus on mass. As much as possible, as loud as possible, as everywhere as possible. But we say: if you want to be relevant as an advertising client in the increasingly important niches and make an impact on your target groups, you have to focus on quality and networking."

Bing and Facebook enter into partnership

Microsoft is adopting a new strategy in the multi-billion-dollar online advertising industry to challenge Google's dominance. Microsoft and Facebook aim to enhance Internet search with the capabilities of online networks.

According to SDA, the two companies announced a partnership on Wednesday (local time). The idea is that entries in the hit list of the Microsoft search engine Bing will be linked to information from friends, acquaintances and family members. The integration of social network functions is intended to make Internet searches more personal and deliver more relevant results.
Searching the internet is not just about connecting data, but also people, explained Microsoft. The new "Liked Results" function will also list entries that Facebook contacts have marked as "Liked". With the new feature, users will be able to fish out entries from the general search results that their own circle of acquaintances have already commented on. It should also be easier to find friends and acquaintances on Bing.
Both companies emphasized that the privacy of users is respected and that only information released for this purpose is visible to others.
Internet searches currently account for more than 50 percent of the billion-euro online advertising business. The greater the number of users, the more advertisements a search engine attracts. Even after the takeover of Yahoo's search engine business, Microsoft still has too little weight in this market - according to the latest figures from market research company Comscore, Bing had a share of 11.2 percent in the USA in September, Yahoo reached 16.7 percent and Google 66.1 percent.

Tamedia/Edipresse: Oetwil printing center to be closed

The media companies Edipresse and Tamedia have jointly established a long-term newspaper printing strategy. The strategy calls for decentralized printing centers in the Espace Mittelland, in French-speaking Switzerland, and in the Zurich region. The printing center in Oetwil am See will close in 2011. As a result, 71 jobs will be lost.

At the same time, Edipresse and Tamedia are investing around CHF 15 million in the modernization of the Bussigny and Bubenberg printing centers. At the Centre d'Impression Edipresse in Bussigny, three printing presses from 1989 will be replaced by two modern presses from Oetwil. This investment will secure the future of the Bussigny site, which employs around 229 people, according to a press release issued on Thursday. The measures, which will increase the capacity utilization of the three printing centers in Bern, Bussigny and Zurich, are intended to reduce some of the high overcapacity in the Swiss newspaper printing market.
The concentration on three locations will lead to job cuts in Bussigny and Oetwil am See. 20 of the 55 permanent employees at the Oetwil printing center will be offered a position at the Bubenberg printing center in Zurich, while a further 16 will be offered early retirement. 19 employees cannot be kept on. In addition, 41 contracts with employees on low hourly wages will be terminated. To support the affected employees in Oetwil, a job center is being set up together with a job placement company. In Bussigny, 16 of the 245 employees will be made redundant, 4 of whom will take early retirement. A social plan will be implemented for all those affected.
Comedia called on the Group to offer a hand for a generous social plan. The planned redundancies must be suspended, the media union wrote in a press release. The company must offer new jobs to more than just 20 people. Comedia was disconcerted that the company had not discussed alternative measures to redundancies with the social partners - and this only weeks after the presentation of very good half-year figures.

Facebook pages increase sales and awareness of companies

For brands, maintaining a presence on Facebook generally pays off. Having their own Pages can boost sales and increase brand awareness through word-of-mouth.

Companies' social media budgets are still surprisingly low, as the advertising agency DDB points out according to the press release. Many brand providers still completely forego a presence on Facebook, Twitter and the like. In addition to the high costs involved, fear of contact and the risk of communicative errors are often the main reasons for this. Yet more than a third of new Facebook brand fans tend to buy their products.
92% of "friended" consumers are also willing to actively recommend a brand to others - just under half are "certain" to do so. Potential customers most frequently come across companies' Facebook pages through advertisements, followed by recommendations from friends and web searches. On average, users follow nine brands. More than half of these come from the media and entertainment sector.
However, fans of a brand expect special customer service in the form of special offers, download vouchers or exclusive content. They want to feel like VIPs who have access to new products and information before the rest of the public. Benefits from promotions are therefore the most important reason for users to follow a brand on Facebook. This is followed by liking the company, access to information and the opportunity to form an opinion about the brand.

McDonalds Switzerland, SF and Swisscom rely on Goldbach Interactive for monitoring

Migros has been using Goldbach Interactive's social media monitoring services since the beginning of the year: Now, three more major Swiss brands—McDonald's, Swiss Television, and Swisscom—have been added to the monitoring portfolio.

Companies want to know what is being said about their products and brands on the social web. Monitoring serves both as a tool for market analysis and for dialog with customers.
Following an extensive evaluation, all four companies opted for the Sysomos Heartbeat tool recommended by Goldbach Interactive, as detailed in a press release issued on Thursday. As an official agency partner of Sysomos, Goldbach Interactive works closely with the software manufacturer and influences the further development of the tool. At the same time, Goldbach Interactive also distributes other social media monitoring tools such as Radian6, depending on customer requirements. Goldbach Interactive also produces social media monitoring reports such as brand or market analyses and develops social media strategies for companies.

Last but not least: The cat from Cameroon

Once upon a time, there was a 19-year-old girl from Austria who wanted a cat. And not just any cat, but a British shorthair cat. But the animals on offer on the internet were too expensive for her - who wants to spend 780 euros on a bit of bone, muscle, skin and fur?

She had almost given up hope of ever holding a cat of this breed in her arms. Then she came across a great offer: 100 euros, including transportation from Cameroon to Germany. Understandably, she didn't want to miss out on the bargain and expressed her interest in the animal. And as it happens when you buy a cat from Cameroon, the girl had to pay and pay for veterinary certificates, papers and the like. Of course, she was promised a refund as soon as the cat was in Germany. The contact man was so "incredibly professional", the poor girl is quoted as saying on Krone.at. He even used company logos and various e-mail addresses, it is hard to believe. At one point, he even sent a notification from Interpol that the cat could not be transported any further because there were so many animal thefts. Well, with so much seriousness, any other person would probably have transferred euro after euro, as the girl did. In the end, a whopping 22051 [sic!] euros were paid into the fraudster's account. But what could she have done "when I realized what was going on, it was already too late," she says. At least she is not alone now: the whole village where she lives is outraged by what has happened. And the author of the article also seems to sympathize with the young girl - not a word about how mentally foggy you have to be to a) order a cat from Cameroon and b) not become suspicious after the second deposit at the latest, and then, once it has happened, c) run to the nearest newspaper and tell the story hot off the press. So that the whole world knows how naive you are.
