Yahoo builds data center in Switzerland

With two new construction projects in the canton of Vaud, Yahoo is expanding its presence in Switzerland and Europe: an energy-efficient data center in Avenches and the new Yahoo EMEA headquarters in Rolle.

A former production and packaging factory will be completely renovated, converted and transformed into a new, ultra-modern and environmentally friendly data center, according to a press release issued on Thursday. Various Yahoo services and products, such as Yahoo Home, Yahoo Lifestyle, Yahoo Sports, Yahoo News and Yahoo Finance, will be supported here.
Cooling the new data center in Avenches is said to require 40 percent less energy than most modern data centers and up to 70 percent less than a conventional design. Instead of conventional air conditioning systems, Yahoo is implementing its own special free-cooling concept. The heat generated in the data center is dissipated and, in return, cool outside air is brought in.

Last but not least: When the company name suddenly no longer fits

There are companies with beautiful names, those with names that are hard to pronounce, funny, long, complicated, or catchy, and there are also companies that have chosen a name that is, shall we say, unfortunate.

The Werbewoche editorial team recently received a press release: "GZP announces expansion of Global Consulting in Somatic Cell Therapeutics". The company is pleased to announce that it has expanded its capabilities in strategic regulatory and product development in support of gene therapy and somatic cell therapy, "including treatment with vaccines for cancer and other serious or life-threatening diseases". GZP stands for "Ground Zero Pharmaceuticals". A somewhat unfortunate name in the truest sense of the word, at least since September 11th. Especially for a company that has declared war on the world's deadly diseases...

Walder, Werber: Regional 3D poster campaign realized for Clientis

With the tagline «The bank by my side,» Clientis Bezirkssparkasse Uster aims to convey its closeness to its customers in Uster, Dübendorf, and Volketswil. The team at Walder, Werber has brought this promise to life through its current poster campaign.

People in everyday situations are shown as life-size 3D figures in a relaxed dialog with the poster and thus also with the bank. They are intended to show that you are in good company at Clientis BSU and that you can interact with the bank in a completely uncomplicated way.
Walder, Werber implemented the campaign with various posters in the region as well as large construction site brandings. In all cases, the 3D figures do not fit into the usual framework of poster sites and thus draw attention to the fact that the partnership with Clientis BSU is not an everyday occurrence.
Responsible at Clientis BSU: Markus Goetschi, Monika Sedeljsak, Jonas Zollinger. Responsible at Walder, Advertiser: Sandro Walder (overall management), Tobias Fluck (CD), Sascha Völki (AD), Michael Döös (graphics), Murielle Bender (DTP), Daniel Wegmüller (text), Andy Müller, Daniela Heidt (consulting).

Cable TV: No connection between price and programs offered

Paying more for analog cable TV and radio service does not necessarily mean you get more channels. This is the conclusion reached by the Price Supervisor based on a random sample of 62 cable network operators with more than 5,000 subscribers in Switzerland.

The basic offers in the analog cable network differ significantly, as the price monitoring agency announced in its newsletter on Thursday, according to SDA. The average monthly price was CHF 17.44, for which an average of 45 analogue television channels were on offer. However, the monthly subscription fees varied greatly depending on the provider. At CHF 5.36 per month, customers of the municipality of Binningen BL, for example, paid around five times less than Grischa Vision subscribers (CHF 27). On the other hand, the people of Basel had 55 channels on offer, only seven fewer than Grischa Vision.
For the 50% of providers that were closest to the average price, the price monitoring experts determined an average price of 41 centimes per month and program. With a range of between 35 and 48 centimes, the deviations in this group were relatively small. Cablecom was above this category with 55 centimes.
The offers of several cable network operators deviated very strongly from the median values. The municipalities of Binningen, Birsfelden BL, Ittigen and Muttenz BL offered a comparatively large range of channels at below-average prices. They charged 10 to 13 centimes. At the other extreme were the western Swiss companies Services Industriels de Lausanne, Télécarouge, Téléonex, Télémeyrin, Télédis, Télélancy and Cometo in the Bernese Mittelland. These companies offered comparatively few programs at a higher price. Their prices were between 57 and 65 centimes.
The study showed that public or outsourced public-sector companies tended to be cheaper per TV channel than private or semi-private companies. 85% of the cable network operators surveyed charged a one-off fee for a new connection. Consumers must expect to pay at least CHF 1,000 for a new connection to a building and at least CHF 100 for a connection to a single apartment. All of the companies surveyed covered renewal and repair costs up to the house itself, 32% also carried out work up to the socket. However, this often has to be paid for by the property owner.
The price monitoring also found that the environment for cable network operators has changed considerably as a result of the digitization of television.
Even though the companies still have a monopoly on analog distribution, they are increasingly exposed to competition from other distribution channels when it comes to digital services. All providers surveyed offered digital television. 98% offered Internet access and 95% fixed-line telephony.
