Tages-Anzeiger ends independent regional reporting

The Tages-Anzeiger is ending its independent regional reporting in the Zurich Unterland and Oberland and in the Lake Zurich region.

The TA regional editorial offices will be closed by the end of the year at the latest. In the Zurich Unterland and Oberland, on the left and right banks of Lake Zurich, the TA will in future be published with a reduced split. As the Sonntag newspaper writes in its current edition, the editorial offices of the regional newspapers will provide photos and texts. A TA mini-editorial team with 500 job percentages, divided among seven people, will produce the splits in Zurich. The articles in the regional newspapers and in the TA differ at best by different photos and titles, according to one person quoted in Sonntag.

Google with a successful third quarter

Despite rising costs, Google exceeded earnings expectations. The U.S. company announced a net profit of $2.17 billion for the third quarter on Thursday after the market closed.

Earnings per share excluding special items amounted to 7.64 dollars, while analysts polled by Thomson Reuters had expected 6.69 dollars. At 5.48 billion dollars, turnover was higher than the expected 5.27 billion dollars. Google shares gained around six percent in after-hours trading. Investors have feared that the Internet company is spending too much money on projects such as the Android software for cell phones or takeovers in its search for new growth markets.

Rumors about Yahoo takeover

According to rumors, AOL is reportedly considering a takeover of Yahoo in partnership with financial investors. The hope is that the two Internet companies could better compete against Google in the advertising market if they joined forces.

AOL could receive support from private equity fund Silver Lake Partners and other financial investors in a potential takeover. This was reported by the Wall Street Journal and other US media according to NZZ. One option would be the prior sale of the 30 percent stake from Chinese online retailer Alibaba, which could raise up to 11 billion. This would facilitate a takeover of the rest of the company.
The takeover rumors about Yahoo have driven up the share prices of both companies.

New editorial director for Fritz+Fränzi

Starting December 1, Eveline von Arx will head the editorial team of the parenting magazine Fritz+Fränzi, which is published 10 times a year by the Elternsein Foundation through its publishing house of the same name.

Eveline von Arx has been working for the Blick Group as a youth consultant and columnist since June 2008. Prior to that, she spent five years as head of department in the Dr. Sommer consultant team of the youth magazine Bravo in Munich. This was announced by the publisher in a press release on Friday. In addition to her work as editorial director, von Arx will remain a lecturer in education/social sciences at the University of Basel.
Until she joins, Leo Truninger will manage the editorial team on an interim basis, which currently comprises 200 full-time equivalents spread across three employees. According to Beatrice Gantner from the publishing house, this will now be increased to 250 percent.

Digital edition of Spiegel already sold 15,000 times a week

The iPad app from the German news magazine *Der Spiegel* is already turning a profit in its first year.

The digital edition of the magazine on Apple's tablet computer has sold around 15,000 copies a week so far. This was stated by Katharina Borchert, Managing Director of Spiegel Online, at the Munich Media Days on Friday. Nevertheless, the print industry need not worry. Because although printed paper is becoming a luxury good, it is one "that I want to have", as Dominik Wichmann, head of Süddeutsche Zeitung Magazin, said at a panel discussion. An excellent offer can also find its financing. It is important to disassociate ourselves from the Cassandra cries that everything cannot be refinanced; the future will be particularly exciting for young journalists.

Competition Commission approves sale of Sunrise to CVC

Following a preliminary examination, the Competition Commission (ComCo) has no objections to the sale of Sunrise to CVC. There are no indications that the deal could change the structure of the Swiss cell phone market.

Following the sale of Sunrise to the Luxembourg-based financial investor CVC Capital Partners Group, there are still three providers in the mobile communications market. A certain dynamic remains in the competition. This was stated by the Competition Commission in a press release on Friday. An in-depth examination of the sale is therefore not necessary, according to the competition authorities.
CVC announced in mid-September that it would buy the subsidiary of the Danish TDC Group for CHF 3.3 billion. The Danes had acquired Sunrise around ten years ago and had been looking for a buyer for years. Plans to sell Sunrise to France Télécom and to merge it with its subsidiary Orange failed in early summer due to a veto by the Competition Commission. At the time, the ComCo wanted to prevent a duopoly with Sunrise/Orange on the one hand and Swisscom on the other.
Now the Federal Communications Commission Comcom and the Federal Office of Communications Bakom still have to give their blessing for the sale to CVC to go ahead, as Sunrise wrote on Friday. The decisions are expected to be published by the end of October. Comcom had already assessed the deal as positive.

Swiss Post and Austrian Post want to work together

The Swiss and Austrian postal services are establishing a joint venture. Their goal is to strengthen their international activities in the area of addressed direct mail. However, the transaction still requires approval from the relevant competition authorities.

The two postal companies signed the cooperation agreement on October 15. Austrian Post holds a 65 percent stake in the new company, while Swiss Post holds 35 percent. It will be jointly managed by the two parent companies, as they announced on Friday.
By working together, the postal companies want to position themselves in the production of direct mail items in Central Europe and exploit growth opportunities in Eastern Europe. According to a press release issued by the two parent companies, the focus will be on consulting, design and production of addressed, individualized direct mail items. Synergy potential could be tapped through this merger and the structural change following the recession year 2009 could be driven forward.
The Managing Director of Prino Tec, Stephan Krauss, is taking over the management of the new company, which is headquartered in Schwandorf, Germany and includes subsidiaries in the Czech Republic, Poland, Russia, France and Sweden. The existing production sites in Germany, the Czech Republic, Poland and Russia will continue to operate.

Audi vs. BMW: The competition enters the next round

In its new commercial, Audi has positioned itself as the winner of a friendly competition against BMW. However, the smug undertone does not exactly inspire friendly feelings among its competitors.

As a BMW driver, she felt provoked, US car market analyst Rebecca Lindland told the Financial Times Deutschland. The very aggressive advertising is unusual. Aggressive? See for yourself.

If you look at sales figures, the campaign is less aggressive than it is not entirely truthful. The VW subsidiary sold a good 73600 cars in the United States between January and September 2010, while BMW sold more than twice as many vehicles at 157500.
However, BMW and Audi have not just recently started to compete in this way. BMW's comparative advertising can also contain a provocative element:

Publicis sews fabric posters for Bernina

Bernina hopes to encourage women in Zurich to take up sewing with fabric posters. The posters, which feature a pre-printed sewing pattern, can be cut out and sewn together to make a dress.

To do this, the poster must be cut out along the line and sewn together with a sewing machine - and the dress in size 36/38 is finished. When the fabric poster is cut off, the paper poster underneath draws attention to the fact that Bernina will be offering more patterns free of charge at Züspa. The new collection can now be found on well-assorted poster stands in and around Zurich.
Responsible at Bernina Switzerland: Christina Ender (Marketing). Responsible at Publicis: Cyrill Wirz (text), Thomas Berger (AD), Peter Rettinghausen (CD), Sabrina Elsässer (consulting), Andreas Caruso (production).

Gotthard breakthrough moves the international media

On Friday, around three hundred media representatives will report from Sedrun, where the breakthrough at the Gotthard Base Tunnel will take place in the afternoon. A hundred people are on duty for SRG alone.

The world record Gotthard tunnel attracts enormous media interest. In addition to the one hundred people from SRG, about 150 journalists will also gather in the workshop in Sedrun, where a large celebration will take place. This is what Rahel Probst, media officer at AlpTransit Gotthard, told the SDA news agency on Friday. The other journalists will be allowed into the tunnel with another 150 invited guests.
According to Probst, more than half of the 300 media representatives come from Switzerland, while the remaining reporters are mainly from neighboring European countries. But Japanese journalists and a representative of the Arabic broadcaster Al Jazeera are also on site for coverage of the Gotthard breakthrough.
