Last but not least: Google knows better

Google is so convenient. Just type something in quickly, and the search engine finds it right away. You’re likely to succeed even if something goes wrong when you enter the search term—whether it’s a typo or simply a lack of knowledge. Google highlights this benefit with a humorous print ad.

A small typo and the "battleship" becomes "battlesheep". But Google is clever and realizes that the user is probably not looking for a sheep, but for a ship, and suggests the more obvious term straight away. Simply practical and good, after all, the poor sheep has lost nothing on the battlefield! (Of course, the whole thing cannot be translated faithfully. Because not only does the joke get lost with "battle sheep", the term also makes sense!)

After the slump a year ago, the Swiss press is once again earning more money from advertisements: In September, advertising revenue rose by 8.1 percent year-on-year to CHF 170.3 million. Job advertisements and commercial ads in particular were placed more frequently.

Income from job advertisements increased by 15.2 percent to CHF 14.8 million, as reported by Wemf AG für Werbemedienforschung on Monday. The Sunday and daily press felt the effects of the upturn in the advertising market, with sales up 11.9% and 7.5% respectively. The general press increased by 10.2 percent, while the trade press (10.5 percent) and specialty press (7.9 percent) also recorded strong growth. Fairness Commission: When is comparative advertising allowed?

In principle, it is permitted to compare products and services in advertising. However, the offers must be comparable and the statement must not be incorrect or misleading. The Fair Trading Commission points this out in current cases.

One institute claimed that its "teaching system is the only comprehensive one in German-speaking countries and worldwide." Although the school had developed the system itself, it failed to provide evidence as to how it could be described as a "single comprehensive teaching system". The Second Chamber of the Swiss Fairness Commission, SLK, wrote: "This type of communication is unfair because the institute will not be the only one in the world that can provide this teaching service."
A comparison is also problematic if an advertising statement claims to be "The cheapest and fastest legal advice, even for non-members". The decisive factor here is whether the average addressee can make a comparison in terms of price and service. Although both parties provided various details in this regard, no comparison could be made, particularly with regard to the duration, which would be necessary in order to determine "cheapest" and "fastest" legal advice. The Second Chamber therefore asked the firm to refrain from making such statements.

Another case: complaint dismissed
However, the Commission took a different view of the case of a language institute that advertised "Fast progress guaranteed!". The complainant disputed that learning progress could be guaranteed, as this also depended on the student. The Fairness Commission disagreed and rejected the complaint. It wrote: "It is not a concrete learning success that is promised (e.g. passing an exam), but an undefined progress that depends on the subjective perception of the participant."

Bold for 1811: The bingo balls roll into the final spurt

The Bern-based agency Bold has created a promotional campaign for Swisscom’s 1811 information service. Since July 19, the bingo balls have been rolling on 1811.ch every evening at 6:11 p.m. Now the website is entering the home stretch with a new look.

The autumnal gala theme will be used on posters, in advertisements and newsletters as well as for various online measures. For the finale on November 18, 2010, there will be hourly draws and celebrity surprise guests. In three months, the website has already attracted over a quarter of a million visitors. Around 32,000 people have registered and actively played bingo more than 65,000 times to date.
