Verein Medienkritik Schweiz: First annual event

The Media Criticism Switzerland association hosted its first annual event on Thursday, November 25. At the conference, the idea of a Swiss platform for media criticism was presented to a broad public.

The aim of the association is to support media-critical activities in Switzerland and thus promote media criticism. This criticism is a process that involves dialogue between media-critical organizations and the public, said the association's president, Gottlieb F. Höpli. In order to reach the public, the media is needed, which is why it cannot be irrelevant how media criticism develops in the media itself.

Höpli explains that media criticism is not just the self-gratification of frustrated people who have come up short and have been harmed by the media. Rather, media criticism should also point out deficits and undesirable developments in the media system and media policy. As there is a lack of commitment and passion in this area according to Höpli, a meta-critic is needed to deal with the various organizations and perspectives of media criticism.
For this reason, the association launched the new Medienkritik-schweiz.ch platform on Thursday. It contains statements from media professionals, experts and observers, brings together sources of media criticism and tracks their development.

Adidas marketing budget largely shifted to the Internet

Adidas wants to shift a large part of its marketing budget to the Internet. The sneaker manufacturer wants to adapt its advertising to the main target group of 14-19 year olds.

Facebook and YouTube are becoming increasingly important for advertising. Social networks are now to play a central role in new campaigns at Adiadias, as Adidas CEO Erich Stamminger told Handelsblatt. Ads and television commercials are only booked as an accompaniment.
There's a lot of money involved. The sports group invests 13 percent of its turnover in advertising every year. According to Handelsblatt, this will be around 1.5 billion euros this year. So far, a large proportion of this has been spent on TV and magazine advertising.
The reason why the brand is focusing on new media is the target group of 14-19 year olds. They spend a lot of time on social networks. Adidas is not the only company that is rethinking. Puma also recently announced that it would be doubling its investment in online marketing.

Conrad Meyer steps down as Chairman of the NZZ Board of Directors

On Wednesday, Conrad Meyer announced his resignation as Chairman and member of the Board of Directors at the Annual General Meeting of the NZZ Media Group on April 9, 2011. Konrad Hummler is to be his successor.

Conrad Meyer is leaving a company that, after an extremely difficult turnaround phase, is back on an economically pleasing course and has a rock-solid financial foundation, the company writes in a press release.
Born in 1949, Conrad Meyer was elected to the Board of Directors in 1997 and took over as Chairman in 2001. During his term of office, not only were the Board of Directors and the company management renewed, but the media group, which had long been managed on a very federal basis, was also restructured from three or at times even four publishing houses into an integrated media company under the leadership of a CEO. The new organizational and management structures have now been introduced and are well established throughout the Group. In addition, the Board of Directors is well equipped for future challenges thanks to the appointment of new and additional personalities with a wealth of experience. According to Conrad Meyer, these are good enough reasons to step back next spring and make way for new forces.
Konrad Hummler becomes successor
Subject to his re-election for a further term of office by the Annual General Meeting on 9 April 2011, the Board of Directors decided at its meeting yesterday to appoint Dr. Konrad Hummler as the successor to Prof. Dr. Conrad Meyer. Hummler, a partner with unlimited liability in the private bank Wegelin & Co. since 1991, has been a member of the Board of Directors since 2001. He chairs the Audit Committee and is a member of the Remuneration Committee. In the opinion of the Board of Directors, Hummler, who was born in 1953, is a personality with a great deal of entrepreneurial and journalistic experience in the national and international arena. Hummler will give up a large part of his other mandates and commitments in order to be able to concentrate on his activities as a private banker and the many challenges in the media sector.
