The amendment to the articles of association makes it possible to register Tamedia as a shareholder of ZO Medien. Peter Edelmann, Director of ZO Medien, told SDA on request that the decision in principle had been taken with only a few votes against. The clear result was a vote of confidence in the new cooperation.
Tamedia is taking over the 38 percent of shares previously held by NZZ. As Edelmann explained, ZO Medien is thus gaining a strong minority shareholder, but will remain independent. This independence is contractually guaranteed until 2019. The cross-shareholding between ZO Medien and Zürichsee Medien will be abolished. According to Edelmann, the aim is to distribute the 10 percent stake among existing shareholders and attract new shareholders. Zürichsee Medien holds a 7.5 percent stake in the Oberland media company.
Zürcher Oberland Medien AG employs around 100 people. The shareholder base is broad and consists of around 550 small shareholders from the region.
Merging the local editorial offices
The background to Tameda's investment in ZO Medien is the exchange of newspaper titles between the Tamedia media group and the NZZ Group in the spring. The NZZ Group received the Thurgauer Zeitung, which will be integrated into the Eastern Switzerland Tagblatt group. In return, NZZ transferred to Tamedia its shares in Zürcher Unterländer and Zürichsee-Zeitung, which previously produced their national pages together with Zürcher Oberländer.
With Tamedia's entry into the regional newspapers, the local editorial offices of the Tages-Anzeiger and the regional newspapers will be merged. A total of 37 jobs will be lost as a result of the cooperation, whereby the Tages-Anzeiger in particular will be downsized. In future, the individual newspapers will draw from the same editorial pool. The readers of the Tages-Anzeiger will continue to receive more concise information on local and regional events, while those of the regional newspapers will receive more detailed information.
The domestic, foreign, business and cultural pages of the three regional newspapers will be produced by Landbote from the beginning of next year. Landbote editor-in-chief Colette Gradwohl will take over the management of the editorial office. The editorial team of the Zürcher Oberländer is not affected by the job cuts. Edelmann said that three people from the Tages-Anzeiger local editorial team had even been taken on. The ZO has been supplying the Tages-Anzeiger with local and regional information from the Zurich Oberland since Wednesday.
