DRS 2: Can quality journalism survive?

This week, DRS 2 is airing a six-part series on media transformation and cultural criticism. The series kicked off Monday at noon on the program «Reflexe.» Media scholar Kurt Imhof, co-author of the «Yearbook on Media Quality,» spoke on the program about the decline in quality in the news media.

Among other things, the series sheds light on the causes and consequences of the loss of quality in the information media. The aim is to clarify what is changing for those affected, for the audience, for journalists and also for democracy when there is talk of media change and a decline in quality. The series also discusses the value of alternative electronic offerings, as well as new journalistic offerings that have emerged in the wake of media change. And it asks about the importance and value of good journalism.
The "Reflexe" programs will be broadcast from Monday to Friday, December 6 to 10, 2010, at 11 a.m. and 10.05 p.m. on DRS 2. In the "Kontext" program, which can be heard on December 10 at 9 a.m., there will also be a debate on the question of how good journalism is financed.

Cancer League/Lung League: Youtube film explains how to cheer

A significant portion of fine particulate matter is caused by wood-burning stoves that are not operated correctly during the winter months. The Swiss Cancer League and the Swiss Lung League have therefore launched a joint online campaign on the topic of «Burning Wood Correctly.».

Warming fires are very popular in the cold season. However, if the fireplace or Swedish stove is not lit correctly, harmful substances and in particular particulate matter are released. With a YouTube film, the organizations therefore show how pollutants can be reduced with simple measures when lighting a fire. The film "Flirting with a gas mask" is available on the organizations' websites and on Facebook present. The campaign was developed in collaboration with the Campaign Forum.

Affichage: Shareholders file suit in Geneva

The Greek operations of the advertising agency Affichage are creating more work for the courts. Two shareholders have filed a lawsuit in Geneva against certain current and former members of the company's management.

The lawsuit is related to the Group's activities in Greece, which have since been discontinued. According to a communiqué issued by Affichage, the plaintiffs are the same shareholders who recently filed a request for expiation in Zollikon ZH. This claim is now invalidated by the lawsuit. Affichage itself is also taking legal action in connection with the failed expansion into Greece, namely against the Group's former business partner in the Mediterranean country.

Last but not least: Printed too early

Actually, I hadn't planned to write anything about «Wetten, dass..?». After all, enough media outlets are already reporting—in great detail—on the tragic accident that occurred during the TV show. However, an embarrassing blunder by an Austrian daily newspaper has now given me cause to do so.

It was a disaster for the tabloid Österreich that the Sunday evening edition had already been printed at the time of the accident. Nevertheless, the paper reported extensively on the show, on guests and performances, as if the program had been followed closely. There was no mention of the accident or the cancellation. Around 30,000 copies that were printed too early were affected. However, around 90 percent of all readers received the corrected edition on Sunday morning, the publisher defends itself. Writing reports in advance and hoping that everything will turn out as planned can work 100 times. And it certainly doesn't help credibility the 101st time.

Baz: Subscription cancellations are not accepted

The Basler Zeitung (BaZ) is not accepting the cancellations received in recent weeks in connection with the Blocher affair. The newspaper informed those who canceled their subscriptions that, given the changed situation, their cancellations would be considered «null and void.».

Anyone who does not register with the newspaper automatically remains a subscriber. The unusual procedure has met with criticism. The publisher explained to "Schweiz aktuell" that it was not possible in terms of personnel to process more than 1,000 cancellations in just a few days. A pragmatic approach was therefore sought. It is hoped that this approach will lead to a higher recovery rate, it continues: "You have to allow us that much egoism." Of the more than 1000 unsubscribers contacted, 70 are said to have already contacted the publisher by Friday: They want to stick to their termination.

The Mediapulse Foundation for Media Research, based in Bern, to which Mediapulse and Publica Data belong, has the legal mandate to collect data on the distribution and use of radio and television programs in Switzerland and to pass this data on to program providers and the advertising industry.
