As a result, the market share rose to 5.18 percent, or 5.54 percent when including co-productions. The Federal Office of Culture announced this on Thursday. Compared to the previous year, approximately 150,000 more viewers watched purely domestic productions. This means that the overall result over the past few years has been above average. Domestic films are not only shown in the largest cities; about one-third of all admissions for Swiss films were generated in rural areas.
The positive figures are due, in part, to the Swiss Alpine thriller *Sennentuntschi*. With 140,000 admissions so far, it has contributed significantly to the positive results and tops the list of the Top 30 Swiss films. But the political drama *Der Grosse Kater* (No. 2) and the comedies «Giulia’s Disappearance» (No. 3) and «Champions» also drew audiences to the theaters. A positive aspect this year is the wide variety of offerings, which was rewarded by audiences with numerous admissions. While in 2009, 70 percent of all admissions were accounted for by the top 10 most successful Swiss films, in 2010 this figure dropped to 58 percent of all admissions. The success of Swiss cinema in 2010 is thus based on the diversity of the national film lineup.
Documentary productions, in particular, had a strong year and made a significant showing among the top 30 most-watched Swiss films. Six of the ten most successful domestic productions are documentaries, led by «Cleveland Versus Wall Street» (No. 5) and «The Woman with the 5 Elephants,» the autobiography of literary translator Swetlana Geier (No. 6). Furthermore, the ranking of the most popular films shows that the federal government’s post-production funding has achieved its goals: «Romans d’Ados 1234» and Peter Bichsel’s «Zimmer 202» both reached a large audience.
Outlook for 2011
The key priorities for 2011 were already taking shape at the end of the previous year: the development of new film funding concepts by summer 2011, the appointment of a new head of the Film Section at the Federal Office of Culture, and support for film festivals. The results of this year’s evaluation of film festivals will be announced in early 2011. The 2011 agenda for Swiss cinema includes, among other events, the «Night of Nominations» on January 26 in Solothurn and the «Quartz 2011» awards ceremony on March 12 at the KKL in Lucerne.
