Opponents of the weapons initiative rely on SVP advertisers

Like the initiators, the non-partisan committee against the weapons initiative is relying on emotions: A maltreated August 1 lion is intended to point out that the initiative endangers Swiss values. The campaign bears the signature of SVP campaigner Alexander Segert.

The committee decided in favor of the SVP advertiser's proposal and his agency Goal, confirmed Jakob Büchler, CVP National Councillor and Co-President of the committee, on Tuesday at the request of the SDA news agency. Among other things, Segert designed the campaigns for the SVP for the deportation initiative with the sheep posters or the anti-minaret initiative with the burka wearer.

Hans-Peter Wüthrich, campaign manager of the association against the weapons initiative, did not want to say how much money is available for the campaign against the "Yes to protection from gun violence" initiative. Officially, the association has at least 975,000 francs at its disposal. This is how much the approximately 65,000 licensed shooters paid in for the referendum campaign over three years.

The initiators have significantly fewer funds: the umbrella organizations of the initiative committee have provided a total of CHF 50,000, the initiative committee said on request. Additional funds are to be raised through donations.

The supporters of the initiative also rely on emotional advertising: their posters feature a shot teddy bear. The work was created by KSB. The agency created the posters free of charge, according to a request from Werbewoche.

Last but not least: Berlusconi tries his hand at rebranding

Silvio Berlusconi's party is struggling with its tarnished image. A marketing firm has now been tasked with turning things around and designing a new name and logo for the Italian prime minister's party.

Soon Berlusconi's group will no longer be called "Popolo della liberta" (PdL/People of Freedom) but "Popolari" (People's Party), according to the Roman daily Il Messaggero. It can't hurt that the popularity of the strongest governing party is on the decline according to the latest polls. The new name is intended to evoke memories of the great party of Italian Catholics founded by the Sicilian priest Luigi Sturzo in 1919. In addition, the Prime Minister wants to avert a possible copyright claim to the PdL logo by his former ally Gianfranco Fini. (The PdL was formed in 2009 from the merger of Berlusconi's Forza Italia grouping and Fini's right-wing Alleanza Nazionale). However, a new name alone is not enough, and Berlusconi is aware of this. The prime minister has other good ideas up his sleeve: for example, getting more women into management positions. Good idea, that way everyone benefits!

Zurich regional newspapers enter the new year with a refreshed layout

It’s not just the Thurgauer Zeitung that has a new look. Following last year’s swap of newspaper titles between Tamedia and the NZZ Group, several Zurich-based regional newspapers also revamped their layouts at the start of the year.

On Monday, for example, Zürcher Oberländer, Zürcher Unterländer, Anzeiger von Uster and the Zürichsee-Zeitung appeared in the new look. The domestic, foreign, business and cultural pages of the former regional newspapers, now called Zürcher Regionalzeitungen (ZRZ), are now produced by Winterthurer Landboten. This also affects the layout. The ZRZ have largely brought it into line with the Landboten. Previously, the Zürcher Unterländer and the Zürichsee-Zeitung, which belonged to the NZZ, produced together with the Zürcher Oberländer together their supra-regional pages.

Hungary: Newspapers protest against media law

On Monday, two Hungarian daily newspapers protested the new restrictive media law on their front pages. The law, which has been sharply criticized internationally, took effect on January 1, at the same time that Hungary assumed the EU Council presidency.

"Freedom of the press has come to an end in Hungary" was printed in all 23 official EU languages on the front page of the left-liberal newspaper Nepszabadsag. The social-democratic paper Nepszava wrote in Hungarian and English: "In a country of the European Union, freedom of the press is a fundamental value. We must defend our democratic rights in Hungary. Let's demand freedom of the press!"

They are convinced that the media law serves the government's "authoritarian aspirations", Nepszabdadsag continued. It offers the possibility of punishing "and ultimately even destroying" those who hold a different opinion. The Nepszava newspaper said it believed that Europe recognized the "anti-democratic" nature of the Hungarian government's measures.

Under the new law, a supervisory authority controls all Hungarian media, including their content. Violations of vague regulations could result in heavy fines, which could drive some publications to ruin. All Hungarian opposition parties want to challenge the law before the Constitutional Court. Strong criticism of the new regulations has come from the governments in Berlin, Prague and Luxembourg, from human rights organizations and Professional associations. The EU Commission is examining the law.

The Thurgauer Zeitung is now published as the head paper of the St. Galler Tagblatt with its own cantonal and regional section. The jacket and layout are taken over from St. Gallen.
