Joint appearance for Bern Tourism and Economic Development

Going forward, Bern Tourism and the Bern Region Economic Development Agency will use a new, shared logo: The Swiss cross replaces the Aare loop and the bear paw.

Thomas Lüthi, Deputy Director and Head of Marketing at Bern Tourism, told the media on Tuesday that the aim was to better position Bern as a product. He described the new logo - consisting of the name "Bern" in capital letters and a Swiss flag - as more self-confident and dominant. As is already known, Bern Tourism no longer only markets the federal city, but also the Emmental, Gantrisch, Laupen and Oberaargau regions. The previous addition "Capital Impressions" has therefore been replaced by the name of the region being promoted. The old logo also featured a stylized loop of the River Aare.

As Lüthi went on to explain, the official launch of the new image also marks the start of the Bern umbrella brand. In future, the Bern Region Economic Development Corporation, whose old logo symbolized a bear's paw, will also appear under this brand. It is important for companies and investors to perceive the Bern region not as the sum of individual municipalities, but as a region, explained Niklaus Gfellern, President of the Business Commission of the RKBM. He was therefore pleased that the majority of the region's municipalities had decided to take part in the joint presentation.

AOL wants to buy Huffington Post

Internet provider AOL wants to buy the Huffington Post for 315 million dollars. The online newspaper was founded in 2005 with just one million dollars in start-up capital and is now one of the most visited websites in the USA with almost 25 million visitors per month.

As AOL announced on Monday, the company intends to pay around 300 million dollars in cash. The purchase would be AOL's largest acquisition since the merger with Time Warner in 2009. The left-leaning co-founder and editor-in-chief of the online newspaper, Arianna Huffington, is to become editor-in-chief of the Huffington Post Media Group, under which all Huffington Post and AOL content will be united. AOL's news sites, including Politics Daily and Daily Finance, are likely to disappear once the deal is finalized, according to a report in the New York Times, which cites informed sources. The majority of the editors will then write for the Huffington Post.

The top management of the newspaper and AOL have already approved the transaction, and the newspaper's shareholders have also agreed. The purchase is expected to take place at the end of the first or beginning of the second quarter of 2011. Although the Huffington Post is privately owned, the transaction must be approved by the US government.

Regional journal for Graubünden launched

Since Monday, Italian-speaking residents of Graubünden have been receiving better and more up-to-date news coverage. «Grigioni sera» is the name of the daily regional news program broadcast by the Italian-language radio and television station RSI.

The new news journal on Rete Uno will be broadcast from Monday to Friday at 7 pm. It offers five to ten minutes of current news from the entire canton of Graubünden, which has around 20,000 Italian-speaking inhabitants. RSI has increased its team of journalists for radio and television in Graubünden from four to six full-time positions. The broadcaster has responded to a long-standing request from the canton to provide Italian-speaking Graubünden with more information on current affairs throughout the canton.

"Grigioni sera" was created after the canton of Graubünden had criticized RSI's undersupply of the Italian-speaking population for some time. In September 2009, the canton submitted a supervisory complaint to the Federal Office of Communications (Bakom). It stated that RSI was not fulfilling its licensing mandate. In the end, the parties reached an agreement with the mediation of OFCOM. And Federal Councillor Doris Leuthard granted the license for the new news journal at the beginning of November last year. And last but not least: they do exist, the really good photomontage

Photomontages are one of those things. There are acceptable ones, bad ones and very bad ones. Then there are those that don't stand out - i.e. good ones. And very few succeed in doing something that goes beyond that...

Take Draft FCB São Paolo, for example. The advertising motif that the agency conjured up for Canon leaves nothing to be desired. At first glance, it is clear that the camera has been tinkered into the picture and does not really belong there. But this does not detract from the overall effect. Neither the historical sculptures nor the advertised product lose any of their splendor. A "power shot" as promised by Canon.

Super Bowl: Advertising of superlatives

This Sunday, the National Football League (NFL) championship game took place in the United States. As it does every year, the Super Bowl was a spectacle not only from a sporting perspective but also in terms of advertising.

The Super Bowl regularly achieves the highest ratings on US television. If you want to run a commercial here, you have to dig deep into your pockets. Fox charges almost three million dollars for a 30-second spot during the broadcast of the final game - not including production costs. The broadcaster already sold its allotment of advertising time for the Super Bowl final in October.

A strikingly large number of commercials this year come from the automotive industry. Almost half of all advertising companies are from the industry or have something to do with it indirectly. A total of nine car brands are represented, including Audi, Volkswagen, Chevrolet, BMW and Mercedes-Benz. As usual, there were also commercials from beer manufacturer Budweiser. The top brands this time also include Pepsi and Coca-Cola.

Advertising Age has devoted itself to the topic in detail. All the commercials are available on the magazine's website: Adage.com.
