Germany: Online advertising overtakes newspapers

In Germany, the online advertising market grew by a total of 26 percent last year to 5.4 billion euros. For the first time, Internet advertising—at 19.2 percent—surpassed newspapers (19 percent) and established itself as the second-strongest advertising medium in the overall advertising market.

This is the result of a survey of gross advertising investments by the Online-Vermarkterkreis (OVK). Traditional online advertising has benefited the most. With a growth rate of 35% compared to the previous year, it exceeded the EUR 3 billion mark for the first time in 2010. In second place is search term marketing with advertising investments (EUR 1.9 billion, +15%), followed by affiliate networks (EUR 339 million, +10%). For 2011, the OVK is forecasting further growth in online advertising of 16% to over EUR 6 billion in gross advertising volume.

The online advertising market is also growing steadily in Switzerland. According to Media Focus, it amounted to over CHF 450 million in 2010 compared to CHF 360 million in 2009. Experts estimate that the overall online market will grow by around 18% in the current year.

Kommtech study 2011: Internet use continues to grow

According to the latest Kommtech study, 85 percent of the Swiss population aged 15 and older already report that they generally use the Internet. Over the course of a year, this figure has increased by more than three percent. Internet use via mobile phones has also risen.

The fixed desktop computer remains the most frequently cited device for accessing the internet. The frequency with which Internet-enabled cell phones are used to surf the Internet has increased significantly. Compared to the previous year, this figure has increased from 12% to 23%.

Even today, television consumption takes place almost exclusively at home. The normal TV set still dominates within the home, although more and more people say they watch TV on a computer screen. As far as the frequency of TV viewing via the Internet is concerned, one in five respondents stated that they use it at least occasionally. However, only 1.4 percent of respondents do this on a daily or almost daily basis.

In addition to the Internet and television, the Kommtech study examines questions relating to radio, mobile telephony, gaming and device use. A total of 2,500 people aged 15 and over in all three parts of the country were surveyed by telephone. The study, which is now in its seventh year, is published by Publica Data in collaboration with the Interessengemeinschaft elektronische Medien (IGEM). Additional information: Publicadata.ch.

Addictive Films: Hollywood Stunts for SBB

Addictive Films has produced the new accident prevention film «The Expert» for SBB. This marks the fourth time that Hollywood stuntman Oliver Keller has appeared in the film as the protagonist and narrator.

The 17-minute film will be shown to all 28,000 employees over the next two years. The events shown will also be discussed and analyzed. The film, which was conceived by Michel Girardin, is a central measure designed to increase safety. To captivate viewers from the start, the accidents were accompanied by an action-packed flight stunt intro, in which an SBB event was already woven in. During the footage, the helicopter, piloted by Jürg Fleischmann, flew at breakneck speed just inches away between the treetops and the train roof, the production company said. The camera in the second helicopter captured the scenes. This year, for the themed SBB accidents, they used actors who are supposed to focus on the emotional level. Addictive Films shot during five days in Grenchen, in the studio and at various original SBB locations. As in the last three "Experts", the film was directed by Swiss director Mike Huber.

James study: Mobile phone and Internet most popular among young people

On Monday, the James Study on young people's media usage was presented in Geneva. The national study shows that young people now use cell phones and the Internet significantly more often than they watch television.

In terms of media use, the cell phone ranks first among Swiss young people, followed by the use of Internet services and then (in descending order) MP3 (listening to music), television, music CD, radio, daily newspaper and computer and video games. The latter are used more frequently by boys than by girls. However, the popularity of the media varies greatly from language region to language region. For example, computer games are used significantly more often in Latin-speaking Switzerland than in German-speaking Switzerland. The linguistic differences show that it is hardly possible to speak of "Swiss" media use, according to the study authors.

Around 95% of respondents have access to the Internet from home. On average, they spend 2 hours and 5 minutes surfing the Internet on weekdays, and just under an hour more on days off. When it comes to searching for information, Web 2.0 (e.g. Facebook) is on a par with conventional search engines such as Google.

The study also investigated what information young people disclose about themselves on the internet. Gender is the most frequently disclosed information on social networks such as Facebook, even before real names. Over 80 percent of those surveyed publish photos or videos of themselves. The older the young people are, the more personal information they disclose. The full results report of the JAMES study can be accessed online at www.psychologie.zhaw.ch/JAMES.

About the study
The James Study is a representative national study on the media use of young people. It was conducted by the ZHAW Zurich University of Applied Sciences in cooperation with the Université de Genève and the Università della Svizzera italiana in summer 2010. The study was financed and supported by Swisscom (cooperation partner of the ZHAW). As part of the study, over 1,000 young people between the ages of 12 and 19 were surveyed in all three language regions of Switzerland.

Politblog launched for the election year 2011

With the start of the spring session on Monday, the Federal Parliament editorial teams at *24 heures* and *Tribune de Genève*, as well as those at *Tages-Anzeiger* and *Der Bund*, are launching a new political blog in collaboration with Newsnetz. The blog is designed to guide users through the 2011 election year.

politblog

The blog is intended to offer journalists, citizens, politicians and party representatives a platform for debate and is published in two languages wherever possible. It was launched on Monday morning with an article by Res Strehle, co-editor-in-chief of the Tages-Anzeiger, on the topic of "Are the media helping the SVP?".

The teams from French-speaking and German-speaking Switzerland publish articles on the Politblog several times a week. The media companies announced on Monday that the number of contributions per editorial team is balanced. The Newsnetz, the joint news portal of Basler Zeitung, Berner Zeitung, Der Bund and Tages-Anzeiger, is responsible for coordination.

In addition to contributions from the editorial offices, prominent political figures such as party representatives or political experts and observers will be involved in guest commentaries by means of a carte blanche. The political blog, which will mainly focus on domestic political issues, will also offer a platform to lesser-known candidates who are standing in parliamentary elections for the first time in 2011.

The new blog aims to create a political community where registered users can actively participate in the discussion and have the opportunity to rate individual contributions and thus vote on the various positions. The political blog is now available on the websites of all partners.

Last but not least: Made and burned in Switzerland

"From here, for here". That sounds like an organic label claim. But it's not. The Swiss cigarette brand Parisienne also makes a regional connection.

parisienne

The cigarette brand surprises its clientele with local packs. After all, local consumers don't live in Paris, but in Pontresina, Pully or Pratteln. Over 4,000 special edition packs will be available in stores and online from March 1. From A for Asconienne to Z for Zermattienne, no place has been left out. Even Corippo, the smallest municipality in Switzerland, has been included. Wonderful!
