1st Swiss Media Prize for Local Journalism and "Swiss Press Photo" awarded
On April 8, in the presence of approximately 700 invited guests, the Reinhardt von Graffenried Foundation’s media awards—each worth 20,000 francs—and the ‘Swiss Press Photo« award were presented at the Bern City Theater.
Outstanding works by outstanding journalists who impressively demonstrated in their medium that local journalism is the supreme discipline of journalistic creation were honored, according to a statement. The award winners are Sabine Kuster (print), Stefan Kohler (radio), Matthias Achermann (TV) and Christian Lutz (Swiss Press Photo). No prize was awarded in the online category. Photographer René Burri was honored with the Swiss Press Photo Lifetime Achievement Award for his life's work.
The 20th anniversary of the Swiss Press Photo Award was celebrated. For the first time, a photo submitted in the "Abroad" category won. The winning image belongs to a photo reportage from Nigeria by Christian Lutz. The best entries from 2010 were used to create the Swiss Press Photo yearbook, which documents the work of Swiss press photographers in an impressive way.
According to the press release, the event culminated with the presentation of the first-ever "Swiss Press Photo Lifetime Achievement Award" to Swiss photographer René Burri. He is the world's best-known Swiss photojournalist of his generation and has photographed on every continent for Swiss and international print media.
The award-winning works at a glance:
The Swiss Prize for Local Journalism Print
The prize in the Print category goes to an "extremely ambitious reportage project" (jury) that Sabine Kuster realized for the Aargauer Zeitung. On the occasion of the European Year of Poverty, she visited the same family five times within one year and shows different facets of their lives. The result is "sensual, vivid and above all: never larmoyant", is how the jury justifies its choice.
The Swiss Prize for Local Journalism Radio
Stefan Kohler realized a report about the Örgeli family Äschbacher for the Regionaljournal on DRS 1. Father and son received the Langenthal Culture Prize, each for their own work. The contribution shows how it came to a rift in the family and why both nevertheless developed in a similar direction. "A piece of poetry, wonderfully told with successful dramaturgy through music," was the jury's verdict.
The Swiss Prize for Local Journalism TV
For his report on the shooting festival in Aarau on Tele M1, Matthias Achermann used a hidden camera. With it, he documented serious safety deficiencies by handling weapons and ammunition. In the jury's opinion, he thus uncovered "astonishing facts on a highly topical, relevant subject".
The Swiss Prize for Local Journalism online
The expectation, the hope for surprising, multimedia and interactive journalistic works was thwarted by reality for the time being. The submissions for the online prize in local journalism show a different picture and ultimately led the jury not to make a nomination, as online jury president Jodok Kobelt explained at the award ceremony. This year's non-awarding of the prize should be an invitation to all journalists, publishers, but also readers and web surfers to engage more actively with the versatile forms of expression of the still young journalistic environment.
Swiss Press Photo of the Year 2011
For the first time in the twenty-year history of Swiss Press Photo, the jury has chosen a picture taken abroad as Press Photo of the Year. Christian Lutz took the picture for a reportage from Nigeria that throws all stereotypes overboard. He shows the misery of the poor next to the ease with which the powerful celebrate the profits from the oil business.
