Goldbach Interactive turns on the slot machine for McDonalds

McDonalds is bringing the Chicken-Bacon-Onion-Burger (CBO) back to its restaurants after two years and promoting it with a national poster campaign. As an accompanying measure, Goldbach Interactive has realized a trilingual microsite.

At Cbo.ch burger lovers can play for menu vouchers at the virtual slot machine every day. In addition, McDonalds is giving away a Sony Playstation 3 to all players. Those who no longer have any coins to play with can invite friends to the game via Facebook, Twitter or e-mail recommendation and receive a new chance to win for each invitation sent.

In parallel to the microsite for McDonalds, Goldbach Interactive has developed a Facebook fansite created. The challenge in creating the microsite was to subsequently animate the given game wheels in Flash, according to the statement. Numerous standard and special advertising media, which run via Mediamind, such as roadblocks, wallpapers or expandable ads (msn messenger) are to ensure high attention for Cbo.ch.

The online measures were created in close cooperation with the media agency OMD and the classic agency TBWA Zurich.

08One: Fresh coat of paint for the Openair Lumnezia

The Chur-based agency 08Eins designed and implemented the festival’s new visual identity. The campaign, with the slogan «Summer, Mountains, Backdrops,» will be on display at APG locations throughout German-speaking Switzerland.

The artistic key visual is intended to transport the poetic atmosphere from the Valley of Light to the cities and leave a unique impression on potential visitors, the agency writes in a press release. The focal point of the subject is a young woman who embodies the lightness of being with playful accessories. In the background is a mountain backdrop that could easily be recreated at home.

The agency also launched a campaign within the campaign. With "plai a mi", fans were invited to send in their own "like" messages via video. The guerrilla campaign attracted over 4,000 visitors on YouTube within four weeks. According to the press release, "plai a mi" was deliberately chosen in the Romansh language. On the one hand, the festival takes place in the Romansh-speaking Grisons Oberland, while on the other, a globally known symbol such as the "i like" button is presented in a language that is not necessarily familiar.

"Paywall" costs New York Times 15 percent of visitors daily

The New York Times launched a «paywall» at the end of March. Just under a month later, the first analysis is now available, confirming that the newspaper's website traffic has plummeted by up to 15 percent per day since then.

"In order to be able to show the effects of the changeover, we compared the total number of page visits to Nytimes.com within a twelve-day period before and after the start of the paywall," explains the market research company Hitwise. This revealed that the newspaper's website - with the exception of a single day - suffered an average daily drop in visitors of five to 15 percent. The total number of page views also fell by between eleven and even 30 percent in the same period.

Last but not least: The little pitfalls of social media

The marketing department at Henkel, the manufacturer of the Pril dishwashing liquid, probably had something different in mind: Instead of a flowery spring motif, a chicken is soon set to grace the dishwashing liquid bottle.

"Pril is a brand with real cult character - and for the first time in Pril's history, you can now actively shape it," can be read on the Pril website. The company is calling on users to design bottle labels - the two with the most votes will then be displayed in stores as a limited edition and "attract attention as a special eye-catcher in many kitchens". A look at the Gallery shows: Many suggestions have been received: Flowers, butterflies, birds and hearts in fresh spring colors adorn the labels received. However, one subject clearly stands out from the crowd: a chicken on a brown background, with the slogan "Tastes delicious like chicken" underneath. And this motif came out on top - with around 4,000 votes ahead of the second-placed design.

Henkel has kept a loophole open for such cases. The first-placed design will not necessarily appear on the shelves - an internal company jury has the final say and decides which two subjects will be used among the ten best placed. And it is very likely that the marketing people will lack the courage to choose the chicken - even though this would probably be the most active way to shape the brand's cult character.

The four first-placed subjects:

Does Escor want to buy Tamedia stations?

Tamedia plans to divest itself of its radio and TV stations. Ringier and circles close to the SVP have been mentioned as potential buyers. Slot machine and casino operator Escor is a new contender.

Chairman of the Board of Directors Martin Wagner confirmed corresponding research by Handelszeitung. "We have registered our official interest in all stations with Tamedia."

The chances of Escor winning the bid in a bidding process are not bad, as the Handelszeitung writes. Experienced media lawyer Wagner, who also sits on the Board of Directors of Axel Springer Switzerland, wants to further develop the channels without cutting jobs and target a younger audience with brand-strong entertainment formats. Unlike Ringier, for example, Escor does not face any concession problems in the event of a package purchase. Wagner does not want to say how much he would be prepared to pay for the channels. However, as a listed company, Escor has various financing options.

Affichage shareholders demand special audit and damages

Shareholders are fighting back at the outdoor advertising group Affichage following its loss-making expansion in Greece. A group led by investment advisors Max Müller and Antoine Spillmann has sued the Board of Directors for CHF 150 million and is demanding a special audit.

In addition, the Annual General Meeting on May 26 is to replace all members of the Board of Directors with the exception of Gilles Samyn, who has only been in office since 2008. Instead, the Group is proposing four new candidates for election to the Supervisory Board. These are publishing specialist Franziska von Weissenfluh, restructuring experts Jürg Müller and Claude Piccot as well as another candidate who does not yet wish to be named, as Antoine Spillmann, head of Geneva-based asset manager Bruellan, said at a media conference in Zurich on Tuesday.

The shareholder group led by him and Max Müller from the investment company Starlet Investment has a combined stake of 5.27% in Affichage. The largest Affichage shareholders, the French JC Decaux and Albert Frère, hold a capital share of 30 and 25.3 percent respectively, but are only entitled to vote with 5 percent each. Müller said that support of ten percent of the voting rights was sufficient for the requested special audit. He accuses the Board of Directors of Affichage of having committed serious misconduct during the expansion in Greece.

Advance payment before business review

According to a handwritten agreement, an advance payment of 21.5 million euros was made for the acquired company before the business audit had even been carried out. In this audit, the consulting firm Pricewaterhouse Coopers then expressed concerns, for example that illegal poster sites were being used and that many contracts had only been concluded verbally. Figures from the Greek subsidiary had also been subsequently embellished. The Greek adventure has since cost Affichage around 150 million francs.

It was irresponsible that the Board of Directors had not pulled the emergency brake earlier. The lawsuit filed with the Geneva Cantonal Court for 150 million francs, which is also directed against the former CEO Christian Kauter, should benefit the company. Affichage itself has only sued the former head of the foreign business because the entire supervisory board would be jointly and severally liable in the event of a lawsuit against a member of the board of directors, said Spillmann. Last but not least: Only for the demanding readership of Weltwoche

Die Weltwoche has come up with something special for its readers: an «exclusive» 5-star educational trip to Turkey. Well then, have fun!

"Pure luxury - between beach and antiquity. 8-day 5-star educational trip on the Turkish Riviera and Aegean Sea," reads the letter accompanying the current issue. "An exclusive offer for loyal Weltwoche readers," it promises. It is somewhat irritating that loyal readers of the free newspaper Spatz, for example, can also enjoy the offer - with the same travel dates. Exclusive can mean all sorts of things. Is Weltwoche targeting the same "discerning readership" that it usually does?

Tamedia: Journalists' association and union demand job security

Impressum, the Swiss Association of Journalists, and Syndicom, the Media and Communications Union, have taken a critical stance toward Tamedia Publishing’s surge in profits. Among other things, they are calling for the reinstatement of laid-off employees.

This will help to reduce the chronic overload in the editorial offices, writes Impressum in a communiqué on Tuesday. The jump in profits of the two publishing houses must be used sustainably.

The Syndicom trade union put it even more pointedly in its press release: "A jump in profits to 111 million francs is the indecent reward for extremely tough restructuring measures that were implemented on the backs of the employees."

The huge profits are a slap in the face for all those employees of the company who have fallen victim to the massive savings programs and restructuring. Syndicom is demanding that Tamedia refrain from further redundancies. In addition, the publishing house should increase the salaries of all employees by 200 francs per month.

In addition, the company is relying on Tamedia's assurance - should the sale of the electronic media become a reality - that employees' jobs will not be at risk and that the continuation of all media titles is guaranteed. The aim is to promote quality journalism and maintain media diversity.

Potential buyers must be made transparent and committed to these goals in the long term, the statement continued. Furthermore, for both Impressum and Syndicom, the time has come to improve the social plans and initiate a social partnership with a collective labor agreement. (SDA)
