AGM of SRG Bern Fribourg Valais: Criticism of campaign against SRG

Harsh criticism of an ongoing campaign against the SRG in German-speaking Switzerland and a commitment to high-quality, independent public service were the focus of Saturday’s general assembly of the SRG Bern Fribourg Valais in Magglingen.

The SRG, which provides a broad range of services of great benefit to the entire population of the country with its radio and television programs in all regions of Switzerland, must listen to criticism and also put up with it, said the president of the SRG Bern Fribourg Valais, Andreas Schefer, at the general meeting in Magglingen. Not all criticism of the SRG is an attack on the SRG. Since the beginning of the year, however, right-wing bourgeois circles, print media, newspaper publishers and parts of the communications industry in German-speaking Switzerland have been waging a campaign against the SRG. "This discredits the SRG as a 'fee monster' and as a 'left-wing store' where program creators report in a one-sided and tendentious manner," Schefer noted. Part of the campaign, he said, is the petition for a reduction in radio and television fees. "The implementation of the petition would only create losers. In addition, the petition threatens to tear apart the federalist network that holds our Switzerland together," Andreas Schefer held. The SRG is questioned by this campaign and attacks and its existence is threatened. The SRG Bern Fribourg Valais, as a co-founder of the SRG association, is defending itself against these efforts. "We support the SRG and stand up for a competent, qualitatively strong, diverse and independent public service."

Guest speaker Lis Borner, Editor-in-Chief of Radio, focused on the regional journals of Radio DRS in her short presentation. The "Regis" are important for the diversity of opinion in the regions, because private radio stations do not really cover what is happening in politics and business. The regional journals are a trademark and an indispensable part of DRS 1, Borner said.

Two new board members

The General Assembly elected Kathy Gerber Widmer (Kirchlindach) and Walter Langenegger (Zollikofen) as new members of the Board. Gerber Widmer is a vocational school teacher in Bern, Langenegger is Chief Information Officer of the City of Bern. They replace Lisa Humbert-Droz (Lugnorre) and Erich Friedli (Bern).

Last but not least: Say goodbye to the search for parking

Now that's finally a useful app: the parking app. Thanks to a network of wireless sensors in the streets and parking garages, it allows drivers to check the availability of parking spaces in real time.

The app ultimately displays a city map where available parking spaces are marked in blue and occupied spaces in red. It sounds too good to be true. But there’s a small catch: it’s limited to the city of San Francisco. There, 7,000 on-street parking spaces and another 12,250 in parking garages are currently monitored by sensors. But of course, the system—which, by the way, cost $20 million to develop—also has critics and opponents: They say it could become a major distraction. The authorities are urging users to pull over to the side of the road while using the app…a rather unrealistic request—it’s highly questionable whether anyone will actually follow it. After all, despite the technical assistance, the goal is to reach the newly available parking spots as quickly as possible. After all, information about the available spot is also available to all other users of the app… Still, let’s hope the system makes its way over to us soon.

Media Professionals in Ticino Adopt a Manifesto Calling for Higher Quality in Journalism

On Monday, the Ticino media professionals« associations adopted a joint manifesto calling for higher quality in journalism. In this way, they aim to counter criticism of the industry and advocate for »competent, independent, and credible" journalism.

To «restore dignity to the profession,» as stated in a press release, the unions Syndicom, ATG-Impressum, and SSM are calling, among other things, for improvements to training programs for the next generation of journalists. Aspiring journalists should be given the opportunity to broaden their knowledge. Furthermore, the unions believe it is important that no external parties influence editorial content. Even the publisher should not interfere. Only then can independence be guaranteed. Journalists must be provided with sufficient economic and social support by their employers.

In a protest outside the government building in Bellinzona, about thirty association members wearing white masks drew attention to the manifesto on Monday. They handed out flyers to all newly elected members of the Ticino Grand Council, who met on Monday for their first session of the legislative term. (SDA)

Star TV repositions broadcasts

Star TV is repositioning its program «New in Theaters.» While the focus has previously been on information about upcoming movies, the network will now place greater emphasis on events and on-the-scene reports.

"In the future, the majority of the cinema program will be produced outside of Star TV. This means we are closer to the audience and can use our studios for new projects," Paul Grau, CEO and owner of Star TV, is quoted as saying in a statement. Thus, within the weekly cinema broadcast, new sections are created such as "Lara + Dave", which in the initial scene together with Pät Schreiber thematize the hottest cinema films.

Swiss Made" is also being repositioned. In the future, domestic feature film productions will be accompanied here from the first day of shooting to the theatrical premiere. "What has been missing for local filmmaking to date is professional coverage for their films. For this reason, we want to give Swiss film even more space on Star TV in the future," Grau continues.

Film journalists Wolfram Knorr and Alex Oberholzer, with their "Movie Talk," will also increasingly cultivate direct contact with the cinema scene in the future. As a result, Star TV's reportage teams will increasingly produce in the scene with the camera and moderation teams on location. In addition, the movie preview "Trailer Cinema Highlights" and the sections "Report" and "First Look" will continue to round out Star TV's movie program.
