Orangina new at Cobalt

The Lucerne-based agency Kobalt has recently taken on responsibility for all below-the-line initiatives across the Migros, Coop, and other retail channels. These activities are entirely focused on the 75th anniversary that the Orangina brand is celebrating this year.

The claim "original by nature" is intended to strengthen the positioning and USP of naturalness - "with real fruit pulp" - in the Swiss market. A TV campaign is now being implemented in parallel. These TV spots have already won creative awards in France.

Goldbach celebrates anniversary

Today, the Goldbach Group is celebrating its 10th anniversary. «To develop and shape the electronic media market»—with this promise, Goldbach launched its operations in Küsnacht 10 years ago.

On the occasion of its tenth anniversary, the Küsnacht-based company is allowing itself for once to take a look at the past years, according to a Goldbach release: "Goldbach started at the beginning of the new millennium with the already long-standing experience of Zurich-based private radio station Radio Z from the 1980s. In the 1990s, it added such as marketer of the first Swiss advertising windows on German and French TV channels. So radio and TV advertising were core competencies right from the start of Goldbach."

Today, Goldbach is a listed marketing company in the field of electronic, mobile and interactive media in Switzerland and other European countries. In Switzerland alone, 245 employees work for the company, while the Group as a whole currently employs around 550 people in 10 countries.

In addition, the 10th annual Mediarena with speakers on social media, mobile and moving images will take place this afternoon at Kaufleuten. In the evening, the Goldbach Awards for the best cross-media campaigns and, for the first time, for social media will be presented in three categories at Kaufleuten.

Mediapulse: Radio and TV research definitely SRG-independent

The Mediapulse Group, which is responsible for radio and TV research in Switzerland, was able to fully separate from its (former) parent company, SRG, in just its third full fiscal year. The foundation, which was spun off from the SRG Research Department in 2006, had taken over both the radio and TV panels from the SRG at its inception—in the form of a loan of 4.2 million Swiss francs.

In 2010, it has now paid back the last installment of around CHF 1.5 million to SRG. "Today, the Mediapulse Group is debt-free," CEO Manuel Dähler was therefore able to announce at the Mediapulse annual press conference.

Cluster risk with 4 major customers
Mediapulse had been pushing for repayment from the outset in order to reduce its dependence on its former parent company as quickly as possible. Even without the loan, Mediapulse is heavily dependent on SRG, as SRG and its marketing subsidiary Publisuisse are its two biggest data customers. The third largest data buyer is Goldbach Media, followed at some distance by Tamedia (Belcom). These four companies account for 80 percent of Mediapulse's total customer revenue, said head of marketing Gregor J. Eschle.

In the 2010 financial year, the Berne-based research group generated income of 18.9 million francs, almost one million francs or 4.4 percent less than in 2009. The main reason for the decline: each year, the foundation can apply to the federal government for around 2 million francs for investments in its panel, but in 2010 Mediapulse drew significantly fewer federal grants than in the previous year. However, the contributions that the foundation did not exhaust (to date, a total of about CHF 1.7 million) do not expire; they can be drawn for larger investments at a later date.

Well positioned for panel investments
This should be the case as early as next year. Because as of Jan. 1, 2013, Mediapulse wants to renew its TV panel called Telecontrol, which has 1918 households under measurement throughout Switzerland. "We are well equipped for this upcoming investment," Dähler said, referring to the figures. He expects the panel renewal to cost a high single-digit million amount. Currently, the evaluation among three system providers is underway (see news item "Mediapulse: Television and radio go mobile"). The reason for the renewal: The current TV panel cannot measure time-shifted TV, nor can it measure Web TV (live streaming via Zattoo or Wilmaa, for example). The Telecontrol system can therefore not collect about 8 percent of today's TV usage, estimates Dähler. This gap is to be closed with the new panel.

Web radio usage as of July 1, 2012 under measurement
The radio panel has similar problems, and currently also has a measurement gap of around 8 percent. Of this, 2 percent is accounted for by time-shifted radio listening and 6 percent by live streaming via the Internet. Of the streaming share, however, Web stations from abroad account for about a third, Dähler says. Mediapulse wants to at least get a grip on live radio streaming from mid-2012 ? with an adjustment to the Mediawatch measurement device, a wristwatch worn by 1012 people every week. This system can currently only measure stations whose acoustic signal arrives at the receiver with a maximum delay of 3 seconds (via FM, cable, satellite, DAB and DAB+). Live streaming, however, occurs with longer and, above all, fluctuating delays. This is why the Mediawatch system is now being modified so that it can also detect and correctly assign reception delays of 60 seconds. So live radio streaming should then be included in the measurement data for the second half of 2012. They will be published in mid-January 2013. (Markus Knöpfli)

Basler Zeitung Medien: Loss significantly reduced after job cuts

After a difficult and eventful 2009/2010 fiscal year, Basler Zeitung Medien (BZM) is once again looking to the future with greater confidence. The improved operating performance is attributed to comprehensive cost-cutting measures, which also involved a massive reduction in staff from 908 to 720 full-time positions.

With sales of 323.2 million Swiss francs, an Ebitda of 28.3 million Swiss francs was achieved in the 18-month financial year. The consolidated loss was reduced from 20.9 million in the 2008/2009 financial year to a minus of 2.2 million for the period from July 1, 2009 to December 31, 2010. This was reported by Basler Zeitung Medien in a press release. Extraordinary write-offs meant that it was not yet possible to break even at the end of 2010.

BZM, under Chairman of the Board Moritz Suter and CEO Roland Steffen, is targeting an Ebitda of CHF 22 million in the current financial year, which is now identical to the calendar year, the statement concludes.

The Handelszeitung is accompanying the 150th anniversary with a comprehensive special supplement on May 12, 2011, in which various authors review the eventful history of the business newspaper and the Swiss economy over the past fifteen decades. In addition, the anniversary will also mark the completion of the weekly newspaper's content and visual realignment.

Last but not least: A touch of "Sex and the City

Talking About Sex for SI online: The German voice of «Sex and the City» icon Carrie Bradshaw has been sharing her thoughts since this week—in an audio column on SI online.

Why do women need shoes in which they can not walk? What does the perfect man look like for every season? And how do men imagine the perfect woman anyway? The German voice of "Sex and the City" icon Carrie Bradshaw - actress, publisher and voice-over artist Irina von Bentheim - has her opinion. And she has been sharing it regularly since the beginning of May in the new SI online audio column. The title of the column is "Let's talk about...".
Why the column's creators only came up with this idea now, however, after the first "Sex and the City" movie in 2008 had brought the series' addictive status a whole lot closer to its end, can only be guessed at. After all, the topics of sex, parties and men in the life of the single woman over 30 have already been dealt with in abundance. What struck a chord at the start of the series in 1998 is more likely to strike a chord of déjà vu today. But perhaps one hopes that Switzerland will also react a little more slowly when it comes to TV and cult.

Mediapulse: Television and radio go mobile

Mediapulse must explore new ways to collect user data, as more and more people are using services that allow them to watch and listen to TV and radio programs on a delayed basis. The new system is scheduled to be implemented starting in 2013.

Three measurement systems from international providers are available for selection. The systems from Kantar Media, Nielsen and GfK will be evaluated. This was announced by Mediapulse on Tuesday. All systems rely on a principle that recognizes the broadcast by its sound.

Mediapulse now measures radio usage by equipping test subjects with a wristwatch. Television usage is recorded electronically on the TV set in the test group. In the future, this will no longer be enough, as more and more people are using cell phones, tablet PCs such as the iPad, or Internet services to watch TV and listen to the radio.

Today, Mediapulse can already capture digital offerings such as Swisscom TV. This will soon also be possible with web solutions such as Zattoo or Wilmaa. In the medium term, mobile devices will also be added. At the same time as adapting the measurement system, Mediapulse also wants to renew the survey panel. In contrast to today, the group of users whose TV and radio consumption is recorded will also include households that have no registered fixed network connection or none at all.

Mediapulse is mandated by law to investigate how television and radio are used in Switzerland. The foundation made a profit of 623'000 francs last year on sales of 18.9 million francs, it added. Mediapulse also receives contributions from the federal government for collecting usage data.
