Wiretapping scandal: Rebekah Brooks arrested

Rebekah Brooks, the former head of the News International newspaper group, has been arrested in connection with the phone-hacking scandal in the United Kingdom, according to a report by the TV network Sky News.

On Sunday, the police merely confirmed the arrest of a 43-year-old woman. Brooks—who is that age—was editor-in-chief of the now-defunct newspaper *News of the World* at the time of the phone-hacking scandal. According to Scotland Yard, the woman was summoned to a London police station on Sunday afternoon. She is now being questioned on suspicion of conspiracy to intercept communications and bribery.

Murdoch Apologizes to the Nation

In addition, Rupert Murdoch apologized to the nation on Saturday and Sunday. Full-page newspaper ads on Saturday and Sunday bore the headlines «We’re Sorry» and «Making Amends for What Went Wrong,» in which Murdoch promised to provide clarification. In the ads, which he personally signed, he apologized for causing people «pain.» At the same time, he expressed regret for «not having acted more quickly to set things right.» On Sunday, additional ads appeared on behalf of Murdoch’s British publishing subsidiary, News International, in which the company pledged its full cooperation with investigators. The company also promised compensation payments to those affected by the phone-hacking scandal. «There is no excuse» for what happened, the ads stated.

Last but not least: "Ke stress" - with Fuchs and Hess

SVP hardliners Thomas Fuchs and Erich Hess want to advance their political careers. They are being supported in this endeavor by porn star J.P. Love, who has produced a funny campaign song for them.

Politics today is largely humorless and deadly serious. Erich Hess is quoted in the *Sonntagsblick* as saying that they want to show that young politicians tackle problems with humor and openness. He hopes, by the way, that the song will become a summer hit. And Thomas Fuchs, who is openly gay, says: «J.P. Love may be a weird guy to many, but he, too, stands up for our Switzerland. For us, leftists who want to push Switzerland into the EU are the weirder ones than J.P. Love.» The *Sonntagsblick* concludes its report on the song with the wise words: «Let’s hope that J.P. Love doesn’t team up with these two to produce what he does best.» We agree. Although—there are probably worse things: for example, if the song became a summer hit and radio stations played it over and over again. But listen for yourself:

Meteomedia parts with several employees

Jörg Kachelmann is parting ways with several loyal employees following his acquittal in the rape trial. It is also unclear whether he will continue his collaboration with Farner.

According to the newspaper Der Sonntag, in addition to CFO Norbert Steffen, who is leaving the weather service provider at the end of October, the job of Executive Board member Alexander Lehmann is also at risk. The Head of Meteorology and Sales was absent from Meteomedia's press conference on Friday, according to Der Sonntag. It is also unclear whether Kachelmann will continue his collaboration with the PR agency Farner. Board member Martin Kurer wants to focus more on press relations himself. Board member Dietmar Gamp has already been replaced. The Meteomedia spokesperson and Farner employee did not wish to comment on this to the Sonntagspublikation and described the departure of the CFO as a "normal process".

Bavaria Film and Meteomedia plan joint production of weather programs

The Bavaria Film Group and Meteomedia are planning to work together from the beginning of 2012 to produce weather programs for television and other customers. The two companies have agreed on this in a letter of intent.

Bavaria Film and Meteomedia have set themselves the goal of further developing this business area together and contributing their respective core competencies. As a production and service company, Bavaria Film will assume responsibility for its core competencies, the production, technical realization and distribution of the broadcasts. Wiretapping scandal: FBI investigates Murdoch empire

Political pressure on Rupert Murdoch is steadily mounting. That's because the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation has now launched an investigation into his media empire.

This was triggered by suspicions that News Corp. journalists had attempted to tap the phones of victims of the September 11 terrorist attacks. According to the Wall Street Journal, the FBI also wants to know whether there were attempts to bribe police officers in order to obtain the information. Meanwhile, according to SDA, Murdoch defended his company's actions in the wiretapping scandal surrounding the British tabloid News of the World. The 80-year-old told the Wall Street Journal, which is also owned by News Corp, that the group would recover from any negative effects of the allegations.

Rupert Murdoch rejected reports that he would sell all his British newspapers because of the scandal, as well as criticism of how he and his son James reacted to the crisis. He was annoyed by all the recent negative press, he explained.

Publicom Study: Crisis in Daily Newspapers

Structural change is posing a major challenge for the news media. But first and foremost, they must help themselves.

This is the result of a recent survey of experts by the media consulting firm Publicom. Users' declining willingness to pay and structural changes in the advertising market are increasingly calling into question the financial viability of journalistic media: Is journalism under threat? What new financing models might be considered?

The experts at the Dolphinarium see less a general journalism crisis than a crisis of the daily newspaper. Other media such as online, radio and television or the Sunday press are far less affected by the developments, they say. However, the need for new financing models is hardly disputed.

The media experts surveyed were almost unanimous in their belief in the industry's self-healing powers. Other options receive significantly less approval. The most likely option is financing through independent foundations. However, there are hardly any supporters of a fee model or even direct state funding. Only the financing of journalistic media by non-media interests, such as political interests, proves to be even less appealing.

Dolphinarium

Under the term Delphinarium, Publicom, which specializes in media research and consulting, regularly publishes the results of a survey of experts. The panel includes more than forty experts from leading media companies as well as representatives from advertising, media journalism, communications science and corporate communications.

Comet: From the forging of time

Armin Strom’s new book brings together the history and present of the fine art of watchmaking through words and images. Komet has created a unique portrait of this traditional Biel-based manufacturer.

In a choreography of contemporary documents, current insights, inspiring text contributions and photographs, as well as detailed impressions of the development and creation of the collections, some of which are still skeletonized by hand, a comprehensive work has been created on around 80 pages. The theme of the campaign, "Not my first Love Affair," is also reflected in the book.

Armin Strom's timepieces are aimed at watch appreciators who place more value on individuality and character rather than status brands or luxury symbolism, the agency said in a statement. By the time you're ready to own an Armin Strom, you've usually already left behind all the standard watches of the upper class. In the book, this motto is reinterpreted by symbolically juxtaposing the past with the present.

Responsible at Armin Strom: Serge Michel (CEO). Responsible at Komet: Thom Pfister (CD), Roland Zenger (AD), Tamara Janes (graphics), Rahel Alder, Stefanie Broccard (DTP), Isabella Jungo, Antonia Bekiaris (text), Simon Schatzmann (head of consulting), Bettina Ammann (consulting). SW: Graduation ceremony for 89 newly qualified communication planners

This spring, 117 candidates took the Swiss national exams for communications planners. On July 8, they received their diplomas from Urs Schneider, chairman of the examination board, at the graduation ceremony held at the Grand Casino Baden.

Jenny Rentsch from Münchenstein, who achieved the best result with an average grade of 5.2, was the most pleased. With a final grade of 5.1, three graduates achieved "second place": Belinda Pfister from Malix, Fabian Schildknecht from Birmensdorf and Angela Rieker from Gossau. Overall, 76 percent of the candidates from German-speaking Switzerland passed the exam, proving that they have mastered the main subjects of communication planning, media and production.

Advertising as an economic factor
In his welcoming speech, Urs Schneider, Vice President of Schweizer Werbung SW and Chairman of the Audit Committee, emphasized the economic importance of advertising: It generates around six billion francs in turnover and employs around 85,000 people. "Advertising needs the best, you," Schneider addressed the graduates. It requires constant further training, for example to become a communication manager, which, like the federal examinations for communication planners, is carried out by Schweizer Werbung SW on behalf of the Federal Office for Professional Education and Technology OPET. And to underline the importance of further training, Schneider said: "Those who only ever do what they already know will always remain what they already are."
