Last but not least: Of clever slippers and equally clever diapers

Competition in the mobile communications market is fierce. As a result, companies in the industry are forced to develop radical new business ideas—which lead to products that are sometimes useful and sometimes less so.

The US telecoms giant AT&T is working flat out on innovative products that go far beyond cell phones. The best example of this is the smart slippers, which are primarily intended as alarms for older people and are designed to ensure that the user receives help as quickly as possible in an emergency. This is made possible by an accelerometer built into the sole of the shoe. This automatically sends a text message to the family or doctor in charge as soon as the wearer shows signs of dizziness or risk of falling.

So far so good, can save lives and therefore somehow makes sense. The point of smart diapers is not quite so clear. Here, a special cell phone chip is integrated into a conventional baby diaper. The chip immediately sends a text message to the parents when their offspring needs a fresh diaper. Due to a lack of experience, it is unfortunately not possible for the writer to say whether the (parenting) world has been waiting for this. But who knows, perhaps a tool can be developed that reports when the baby's stomach is empty, when it needs affection or when it needs fresh air. And then women would soon no longer have to endure the ordeal of giving birth: Who needs children - after all, a Tamagotchi will do.

Yahoo: Revenue down 23 percent

Internet pioneer Yahoo continues to struggle with a shrinking business. In the second quarter, revenue fell 23 percent to $1.2 billion. At the same time, however, Yahoo was able to cut costs, thereby increasing its profit by 11 percent to $237 million.

Among other things, company CEO Carol Bartz spoke on Tuesday of a weakness in so-called display advertising - that is, graphic ads on websites. Actually, these are Yahoo's hobbyhorse, but the big rival Google penetrates further and further into the field. Just recently, Google took over the specialist Admeld. With the social network Facebook, a third powerful rival has also appeared on the ad market.

In order to improve the market positioning of her company, Bartz has cut hundreds of jobs and entered into a cooperation with Microsoft for Internet search. So Yahoo now uses Microsoft's Bing search engine, but in return must give up some of its ad revenue to the software company. "We're making clear progress on Internet search," Bartz said. But the effort wasn't enough for investors. Analysts had expected a better result and also criticized what they considered too weak an outlook.

Especially when compared with Google's figures, it becomes clear how difficult Yahoo is currently having it: The search engine market leader boosted its revenue last quarter by 32 percent to just over $9.0 billion and posted a profit of $2.5 billion - 36 percent more than in the same period last year. Republica: Mailing offensive for Jaguar

For once, Republica left the brand's British understatement out of the equation at Jaguar and created a neon-colored mailer series.

Three brightly colored mailings were sent to recipients throughout Switzerland at two-week intervals in May and June. The aim of the personalized mailings was to generate test drives and sales. The mailings are a good example of how a traditional and innovative British premium brand like Jaguar can use flashy colors to attract attention in the flood of mail, the agency writes in a statement. The three mailings came in neon green, neon pink and neon orange. The inside pages were based on the Jaguar appearance of the current national advertising campaign.

Marco Castellaneta will hand over the management of Ringier Entertainment to Stefan Kastenmüller, who comes from Ufa Film & TV Produktion, effective September 15.

Facebook top news source for many users

For users in Germany, Facebook has become one of the most important news portals. Many now even get their news exclusively from friends on the social network, as market researchers at Innofact point out. As a result, friends are becoming opinion leaders.

"Many users invest a lot of time in the portal," says Matthias Hallmann from Innofact in an interview with Pressetext. "This is taken away from other online media." On the other hand, friends like to link to external content and explicitly refer to "interesting content" in their status updates. In this way, they even attract new readers to traditional news websites. Twitter is a prime example of the "accelerator of communication".

At just under 20 million, more than a third of German internet users are currently active on Facebook. 27% of them dedicate at least half of their online time to the network, while 12% even spend more than 70% of their web consumption on the platform. Almost one in two users uses it to get the latest news from friends and acquaintances. 26% do not visit other websites for the news and only use Facebook for information.

Radio Lora: Literature in the ears

Literature Week on Radio Lora: From August 1 through 7, the alternative local radio station will be broadcasting poetry, short stories, book reviews, author profiles, radio plays, novel excerpts, and much more.

According to the station, the literature week gives space to everything that usually goes unnoticed in the mainstream literary scene. "We want to spend a week discovering works beyond the mainstream together with our listeners and whet their appetite for small forms, experimental texts, multilingual approaches, subversive books and the cryptic." Each day of the literature week has a specific theme. On Monday, the whole day belongs to women, with female writers from Zurich and German-speaking Switzerland presenting their work. Every morning, a poem sets the mood for the day. Radio play productions created in German-language independent radio stations are given a special place.

On Wednesday, August 3, Lora also invites literature enthusiasts to the studio at 8 pm. The young Zurich author Enzo Scavone will be reading from his own texts in German and English.

Hacker attack on Murdoch newspaper The Sun

On Monday, the hacker group Lulz Security hacked the website of the British tabloid The Sun and published a hoax story reporting the alleged death of media mogul Rupert Murdoch.

The newspaper deleted the entry stating that the 80-year-old had been found dead in his garden shortly after publication on Monday evening. The Sun, like the now defunct scandal sheet News of the World, belongs to the British Murdoch spin-off News International.

Visitors to the website were redirected to the Lulz Security page on the short messaging service Twitter, where the hackers claimed responsibility for the attack and announced further actions. "This story is just phase one," one message said. A spokeswoman for News International said the British newspaper group was aware of the online attack.

In recent weeks, Lulz Security claimed to have attacked the websites of companies such as Sony and Nintendo, as well as the US Senate and the US intelligence agency CIA. The group originally announced the end of its activities at the end of June. (SDA)
