New Basel weekly newspaper is called Tageswoche

The new Basel weekly newspaper, *Tageswoche*, will be published for the first time on October 28, 2011. It will be published in print every Friday, and a daily online edition will also be available.

According to NZZ am Sonntag, the name of the paper is intended to express these two manifestations. The subtitle of the newspaper is "Zeitung aus Basel". The newspaper, which will be printed in a bundle, is to report primarily on the Basel region, but it will also have a correspondent in Bundesbern. In addition, contributions about what is happening abroad are planned. The editorial office and publishing house consist of a total of 30 people. The editorial team is headed by journalists Urs Buess and Remo Leupin. Roche heiress Beatrice Oeri is providing the money to get the project off the ground.

Last but not least: The special service

After Levi's had to put a campaign on hold due to recent events, the Asian airline Cathay has also been hit. Although the circumstances are far less dramatic, they are all the more precarious.

Photos had surfaced on the internet showing a woman wearing a Cathay uniform together with a man without a uniform - allegedly a Cathay pilot - having oral sex in a cockpit. In the planned campaign, the company promises its passengers that the team will "go the extra mile to make you feel right at home." Members of Cathay's crews were to be shown in their uniforms, making the promise of special service. The campaign is now to be held back for the time being. The timing of this scandal could not have been worse from a marketing perspective, according to a Cathay spokeswoman. It was obvious that the advertising slogan and the campaign could too easily be misinterpreted, ridiculed or mocked. Where she's right, she's right.

Coop takes 95 branded products off the shelves

The retailer Coop is removing 95 branded products from its range. Coop's Head of Purchasing and Marketing, Jürg Peritz, told the Sonntagszeitung newspaper that the company wanted to send out a signal against the manufacturers' excessively high prices, which were making currency gains.

Items from L'Oréal (StudioLine), Mars (Uncle Ben's) and "children's" products from Ferrero are affected, as Coop writes on its homepage. "For months, we have been asking our suppliers to pass on their exchange rate gains to our customers by lowering their prices. Many large corporations and importers are now refusing to comply with this demand," it says.

According to Jürg Peritz, Coop had given the manufacturers an ultimatum until 12 noon last Thursday to lower their prices. "This deadline expired without those affected showing any willingness to pass on the currency gains to customers appropriately," he told the Sonntagszeitung.

In total, the products that have been removed represent a sales volume of 30 million Swiss francs, as Coop spokeswoman Sabine Vulic confirmed to the SDA news agency. It is "within the realms of possibility" that further products will be removed from the range.

The company is currently in tough negotiations with various other producers and suppliers. According to Vulic, some have already given in and agreed to price reductions. The next few days will show which other items may disappear from the Coop shelves.

Coop had already announced an average price reduction of 9 percent on 177 items on Friday. Denner and Spar had also announced price reductions. Denner is lowering the prices of around 50 products. The food discounter wants to put branded products on the shelves at 20 percent lower prices. Spar wants to lower the prices of various own brands.

The number one retailer in Switzerland, Migros, will make a possible decision to remove products from its range "next week at the earliest", according to spokesman Urs Peter Naef. (SDA)

NZZ Media Group increases profit

The NZZ Media Group's earnings for the first half of fiscal year 2011 exceeded the previous year's figure by 3.2 million Swiss francs. The main reasons for this are newly acquired media outlets, increased revenue, and improved capacity utilization at the printing centers.

According to the press release, the NZZ Media Group increased its operating revenues by 4.1 percent to CHF 261.0 million, mainly thanks to newly acquired media Thurgauer Zeitung and Anzeiger Luzern as well as higher revenues in the electronic media sector, with all revenue types recording an increase in sales. Advertising sales increased by 3.1 percent year-on-year, mainly due to acquisitions. Revenues from subscription and single-unit sales recorded a slight increase despite a continued slight decline in newspaper circulation due to price increases and the addition of new titles. Thanks to successful market development, print orders were added, resulting in a 3.5 percent increase in sales over the previous year. The positive sales trend in electronic media continued in the first half of 2011. The expansion in the online sector and, in particular, the higher revenues from the radio and TV business recorded an increase in sales of 15.4 percent.

Total operating expenses increased by 2.2 percent year-on-year to 231.7 million Swiss francs. The increase in costs was mainly due to investments in the areas of publishing and digital media, but new print orders also resulted in additional expenses. In relation to the increase in sales, costs increased at a lower rate, which led to an increase in the operating result (Ebit) of 5.3 million Swiss francs to 29.3 million Swiss francs. The Ebit margin increased from 9.6 percent to 11.2 percent.

Outlook difficult

Since the beginning of the year, the good half-year result in particular has led to an increase in equity of CHF 11.3 million to CHF 440.9 million, despite dividend payments of CHF 12.0 million. This increases the equity ratio by one percentage point to 70 percent.

The first half of 2011 was characterized by turbulent global events, which also had a direct impact on politics and the economy in Switzerland, the company writes in the statement. The continuing political and economic uncertainties are currently hampering the outlook for the second half of the year. Accordingly, expectations are cautious.

Goldbach Group: Significant increase in sales

In the first half of 2011, the Goldbach Group increased its revenue by 38 percent to 210 million euros. Excluding the impact of fluctuating exchange rates, the company, which operates throughout Europe, would have increased its revenue by more than 40 percent.

The advertising marketer made particularly strong gains in television and radio advertising. The company has received significant mandates, Goldbach announced on Friday, according to SDA. These should further increase revenues this year. Since the beginning of the year, Goldbach has had the channels Sat.1, Kabel eins and 3+ in its marketing portfolio.

The Group is also currently receiving a boost from the high demand for online marketing. At 14.5 million Swiss francs, operating profit is twice as high as in the same period last year, while net profit rose by only 1 percent to 3.1 million Swiss francs. The sale of a print business in Romania resulted in a charge of around 700,000 francs, according to Goldbach.

The company expects double-digit growth in sales and operating profit in the current year. Goldbach describes its service concept as innovative and intends to use it to defy growing economic concerns and fluctuating foreign exchange markets.

US Postal Service considers cutting 120,000 jobs

Due to its financial difficulties, the U.S. Postal Service may cut up to 120,000 jobs. The government-owned enterprise is facing its second consecutive year of losses in the billions, according to its 2010 annual report.

The authority also wants to remove its employees from the pension and healthcare contracts for state employees and set up its own system instead. However, all measures require the approval of Congress, and there is also the threat of conflict with the unions. The US Postal Service has already cut 110,000 jobs over the past four years and is currently in the process of cutting a further 7,500 administrative jobs. According to the annual report, the agency had 583,908 employees.

The US Postal Service is struggling with the decline in the mail business due to the Internet and the decline in advertising due to the recession in the USA. In order to stem the losses, it is considering closing 3,653 post offices, which is around a tenth of all post offices. Rural post offices would be particularly affected. (SDA)

Goldbach Interactive: New design for McDonald's website

Goldbach Interactive has relaunched the McDonald’s Switzerland website. The agency had already won the pitch against two competitors at the end of last year and has now completed the project.

The new website focuses more on nutrition, family and engagement, writes Goldbach Interactive in a statement. The website structure has been revised and the navigation streamlined. Another new feature is the restaurant finder, which can be used to filter the more than 150 Swiss restaurants according to criteria such as "Mc Drive," "Mc Café" or "Junior Club.

Goldbach Interactive redesigned the website, adapted it to the current SEO requirements and added the content. The programming was based on the Drupal content management system. In addition to the website, the agency has already implemented other projects for McDonald's, including an online campaign for the CBO burger or MSN Messenger Ads for the McFlurry Magnum Festival.

Cooperation of Elmer Citro and Märchenhotel Bellevue in Braunwald

Elmer Citro has launched a partnership with the Märchenhotel Bellevue in Braunwald. Through this partnership, Elmer Citro aims to reinforce its strategic marketing themes of nature and family and hopes that the collaboration will help introduce the beverage to «city families» as well.

Elmer Citro is making a special appearance at the Märchenhotel Bellevue in Braunwald, according to a press release. Since the beginning of June, the Märchenhotel's minibar has exclusively stocked Elmer Citro and Elmer Mineral, which can be enjoyed free of charge by hotel guests. Every guest is welcomed with an Elmer Citro.

The Märchenhotel has also made a name for itself internationally. In 2009, hotel owners Martin and Lydia Vogel won the Family Cup for the "best family hotel". On May 1, 2011, the two long-standing hoteliers handed over the reins of the four-star hotel to their son Patric Vogel and his partner Nadja Bänziger. The agreement with Elmer Citro was one of Patrick Vogel's first official acts, as the story continues. "I loved drinking Elmer Citro as a child and am delighted that our guests can now enjoy it here too. Elmer and the Märchenhotel are two brands that go together perfectly," the new hotel manager is quoted as saying.

Race against Cancer: Make a statement against cancer now!

Every participant counts at the 'Cycle Race Against Cancer' on August 27 on the Gotthard Pass. Join the fight with your team against this insidious disease, which affects 36,000 Swiss people and claims 15,500 lives each year.

The case of Nella Martinetti, who recently died of pancreatic cancer, shows just how quickly cancer can strike with an ice-cold hand: she actually wanted to take part in the "race against cancer" on August 27 by looking after the offspring of parents who were cycling. At the beginning of June, the singer, composer and lyricist told Advertising Week: "I very much hope that I will still be alive in August - because I want to be there and show that there is still a lot to do against cancer. If every Swiss person donated just one franc, we would have 8 million francs to invest in research." Now Nella Martinetti is dead. Her last wish has not been fulfilled.

But you can do something against cancer: Join us on August 27, starting at 7 a.m., when individual cyclists and teams of three to six cyclists conquer the old Tremola pass road from Airolo to the Gotthard Pass. You cycle back and forth without timekeeping or ranking, as often as your strength allows. Breaks are allowed when, where and for how long you want. Because it's not about winning, but about the constant battle against the mountain, which symbolizes cancer, according to the motto "Never give up! Giving up is out of the question".

Or join the solidarity hike "On the road against cancer". It starts at 10.30 a.m. and leads from Airolo via the old mule track to the Gotthard Pass. The hike takes a total of 4 hours; if you wish, you can also turn back after 90 minutes at the Motto Bartola stopover. The hiking trail crosses the Tremola several times, so that hikers and cyclists can meet again and again and cheer each other on.

On the road against cancer

Why do cycling and walking help against cancer? Firstly, because physical activity is the most effective remedy against this disease - after all, one in three Swiss people will be diagnosed with cancer in the course of their lives. So prevent it. Secondly, all cyclists pay an entry fee: private individual cyclists CHF 2,500, private teams CHF 5,000, company-sponsored individual cyclists CHF 5,000 and teams CHF 10,000. There is no entry fee for the walk, but voluntary donations of any amount are very welcome. The money raised will be donated without deductions to the Cancer League Relief Fund to support cancer patients in emergency situations, which arise very quickly due to horrendous treatment costs, as well as to the "Swiss Childhood Cancer Survivor Study", which investigates the late effects that children and young people whose cancer has been successfully treated suffer as adults. Last year, the race raised CHF 220,000, which was invested in various cancer projects.

"So far, 160 participants have registered, including 28 teams," says Markus Aerni, project manager of the "race against cancer". "Among them are many celebrities such as gymnast Ariella Kaeslin, ski racer Bruno Kernen, Olympic champion Robert Dill-Bundi, cyclist and Tour de Suisse race director Beat Zberg, wheelchair racer Heinz Frei and ski racer Corinne Schmidhauser. We are observing a trend towards active and sporting commitment to fighting cancer rather than simply donating to the Cancer League just before Christmas. This solidarity with sufferers and their families is encouraging."

Anyone who registers now for the "race against cancer" can only win: The first three to register themselves or their team at www.cancerrace.ch under the keyword "Werbewoche" will receive a free annual subscription to Werbewoche plus four copies of the Media Trend Journal. Give yourself a jolt! Anne-Friederike Heinrich
