Last but not least: The blindfold as a corpus delicti

People are becoming increasingly sensitive to sexist advertising and have long since stopped putting up with anything featuring feminine curves, long legs—and blindfolds.

For example, a consumer lodged a complaint with the Swiss Commission for Fair Trading against an advertisement for a chocolate bar. She criticized the fact that the woman depicted, whose eyes are covered by a blindfold, had a "purely decorative function". According to the complainant, there was no natural connection between the "sexualized depiction of the woman" and the chocolate bar. The respondent, meanwhile, argued that the depiction with the blindfold was a key visual intended to visualize trust in the products. In addition, the campaign featured the same subject with a man.

The Fairness Commission dismissed the complaint. The interpretation of the subject matter in question by the complainant was not obvious. For the "average addressee", there were no indications in the depiction and description that would associate the subject with sexuality.

Yes, times are changing. While today even a blindfold (on a clothed woman, mind you) can cause red heads, in 1970 it was still possible to depict a naked boy with an ambiguous slogan. (Source image: Vongestern blog). Whether the case ended up before the Fairness Commission at the time is unfortunately beyond the editorial team's knowledge. Probably not - and for the "average addressee" there are, strictly speaking, also no indications that link the subject to sexuality - hopefully.

SRF: Barbara Widmer new Head of Business Editorial Radio

Starting in September 2011, Barbara Widmer will head the business news desk of the Radio Editorial Department. She succeeds Rainer Borer, who moved to the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority (FINMA).

In Barbara Widmer, the editorial board has appointed the previous deputy head as the new head of the radio economics department, according to a press release issued on Monday. Widmer is an economist and has worked as business editor at Schweizer Radio DRS for 19 years. As the previous deputy, she has management experience and excellent knowledge of the dossier, the statement continues.

The editorial team is convinced that Barbara Widmer is a very good choice. Peter Bertschi, member of the Editorial Board Radio: "We value her broad radio experience, her professionalism, her extensive business knowledge and her open and communicative manner. The editorial team is therefore looking forward to continuity after the departure of Rainer Borer and is very much looking forward to working with Barbara Widmer."

In June, SRF announced that business journalist Oliver Stock would be Borer's successor. However, the 45-year-old has decided not to take up his position, as SR editor-in-chief Lis Borner told the news agency SDA on Tuesday. Stock will be the new editor-in-chief of the online portal of the German business newspaper Handelsblatt. Stock has been in temporary charge of the Handelsblatt web portal since May 2011, following the abrupt resignation of former online editor-in-chief Sven Scheffler.
