Sava lunch: "Media brands are losing importance"

Karen Heidl's conclusion and forecast for the future shows the
She summed up the challenges and opportunities that all media, but especially specialist titles, have to face in the Internet age. "Media brands are becoming less important," the publishing expert and media consultant made clear. Of course, this was no easy task for the 30 or so visitors to the event, as specialist titles/specialist media in particular had previously been able to anchor their brand in the readership thanks to high-quality specialist information. In the age of the Internet, however, this has changed, according to Heidl. Because users no longer search for the name of a title, but for relevant (specialist) information. This leads to a completely different behavior in terms of branding, reader marketing and so on.

In the second presentation, Urs Schneider, owner of Mediaschneider, showed how a media agency goes about evaluating media. For him, one of the most important things is the clearly defined target group and the constant focus on it. It is precisely the expertise that specialist media demonstrate in their fields that can steer a decision in the direction of specialist titles, because specialists are found in their environment who are required as a target group in the briefing. Opinion leaders can often be reached in specialist titles, and it often makes sense to advertise with a supplement in a specialist title, for example, instead of accepting high scatter losses according to the watering can principle.

The presentations were followed by an aperitif and lunch. Those responsible at Sava were delighted that 18 of the 28 attendees took the opportunity to discuss the presentations further and exchange experiences in general. The visitors were offered exciting insights and suggestions to increase the chances of their own titles being considered by media agencies as a specialist medium. And one or two visitors were sure to take a critical look at the parameters of their specialist media after the Sava event.

Swissprinters plans site closures

Against the background of the continuing negative earnings situation, Swissprinters is planning to close its production sites in Zurich and St. Gallen. At the same time, the company is thus pursuing its focus on industrial print production.

For the Zurich plant, which currently employs 74 people, the takeover of business activities and employees by a renowned company in the graphic arts industry is planned, the company wrote in a statement on Wednesday. The closure of the St. Gallen facility, which currently employs 173 people, is under consideration. The intention is to cease production in Zurich and St. Gallen by June 30, 2012 at the latest.

The Eidenbenz Calendar business unit is expected to be taken over by Calendaria on January 1, 2012. It is also planned to adapt the entire management organization, prepress and sales in German-speaking Switzerland to the future size and orientation of the company. The Lausanne site in western Switzerland is to continue unchanged. Any measures are subject to legal participation and will in any case take place in compliance with the rules of social partnership, the company adds.

The reason for the planned redimensioning is the increasing volume decline in the print sector and the low profit margins in the small and medium run segment. The situation is made more difficult by the continuing strength of the Swiss franc and the associated migration of print jobs to other European countries, he added. "Even with consistent cost savings in recent years, we have not been able to sustainably influence the negative earnings development of our company. We cannot avoid taking more far-reaching measures in the near future," said Alfred Wälti, Chairman of the Swissprinters Management Board. "We are facing a serious decision. Nevertheless, we see potential for the future of the company in the consistent focus on profitable volume business with upstream and downstream services," says Chairman of the Board Martin Werfeli.

The Swissprinters Group was formed in 2005 from the merger of all the non-newspaper printing operations of Ringier and NZZ Group. In 2006, the western Swiss media group Edipresse joined the group as a shareholder. The Zurich site produces in sheetfed offset and digital printing processes and is the market leader in the realization of annual reports. The Swissprinters site in St. Gallen prints magazines, catalogs and brochures using web and sheetfed offset processes.

Erdmannpeisker: When chickens and rabbits tell of country life

Erdmannpeisker produced a promotional video for a residential development in Diessbach. The target audience is the upper-middle class with a penchant for modern architecture and a desire for country living.

And so that this does not become a boring sermon, they appear in the film as illustrated animals, similar to the English TV series Creature Comforts. The link is distributed and promoted via ads in trade magazines as well as email and postcards in the catchment area of the cantons of Bern and Solothurn.
