Graphics industry back in recession

The recession is already a reality for Swiss print shops. The graphic arts industry is increasingly losing orders to foreign competitors due to the strong franc.

After a slight upturn at the beginning of the year, gross value added in the graphic arts industry in the third quarter was 9% lower than in the previous year and similar to the crisis year 2009. This means that output fell for the second quarter in a row. This was announced by the industry association Viscom on Tuesday on the basis of data from the BAK Basel research institute.

Exports slumped by around 30 percent, while real imports of graphic arts products (excluding newspapers and magazines) rose by 20 percent, helped by the strong Swiss franc. Over the course of the year, however, key customers such as the advertising industry and retailers began to order less.

In August, when the euro was worth just over one franc, things looked particularly bleak. At least the lower limit for the euro-franc exchange rate of 1.20 set by the Swiss National Bank (SNB) at the beginning of September ensured that the generally ruinous price war did not escalate any further, writes Viscom.

Glaswerk Design: Department of Health "with hand and foot

The agency Glaswerk Design created a visual concept and an anniversary magazine for the Department of Health at ZHAW. The Department of Health at the Zurich University of Applied Sciences was founded five years ago, in January 2006, in Winterthur.

On November 4, 2011, it celebrated its fifth anniversary with an anniversary party and an open day on November 5. The Glaswerk Design agency was responsible for developing the visual identity and producing the anniversary magazine. Glaswerk Design worked closely with the client to develop a visual concept for the two events and the design of the anniversary magazine. Under the motto "With hand and foot", a key visual was created that was used in advertisements, posters, invitations and accompanying flyers.

The layout of the anniversary magazine, also designed by Glaswerk Design, guides the reader through the young, dynamic history of the Department of Health over 48 pages. It gives a face to the people who brought it into being as well as those who have been touched by it to this day and combines their statements into the core message: the Department of Health offers knowledge and solutions "with hands and feet" for the future of healthcare.

The spokesperson for Zurich Airport became the first woman to be ranked No. 1. However, Zöchling Stucki had been ranked between 4th and 7th place each year for the past five years, according to a Swiss press release published Tuesday on Presseportal.ch.

Last but not least: No shock photos on US cigarette packets

On Monday, a U.S. judge blocked the tobacco industry's planned requirement to print warning photos on cigarette packs. The reason: The proposed images were considered small-format advertisements for an open anti-smoking campaign by the U.S. government.

This was decided by Judge Richard Leon. A lawsuit was filed in August against the new regulation, which came into force in September 2012. The plaintiffs were four tobacco companies who believe that the right to freedom of expression enshrined in the first article of the US Constitution has been violated.

Leon's ruling temporarily suspended the obligation to publish the photos pending a decision in the proceedings on the constitutionality of the regulations. In doing so, he pointed out that it had already been criticized in other proceedings that the images violated consumers' right to protection from forced advertising messages.

Cigarette packs in the USA are to be printed on both sides with photos that illustrate the harmful effects of smoking. Up to now, they have only featured warnings in text form.
