Council of States committee does not want an online advertising ban for SRG

SRG broadcasters are not to be banned from advertising on their websites. The Council of States' Committee for Transport and Telecommunications (KVF) rejected a parliamentary initiative by Maximilian Reimann (SVP/AG) calling for such a ban by 8 votes to 5.

In his motion, Reimann demanded that advertising should now also be banned on SRG's online offering and not just on radio programs, as is the case today. For Reimann, competition is distorted when SRG broadcasters financed by fees place advertising on their websites. The advertising-financed private online providers would be at a disadvantage. In Switzerland, these are mainly operated by print media publishers and private radio and TV stations.

The Council of States KVF agrees with Reimann that the issue needs to be clarified. The committee sees a need for action, the parliamentary services announced on Thursday. Due to technical, financial and media policy developments, a solution must be found. However, a total ban on SRG online advertising seems unsuitable to the Commission. Instead, the Commission is calling on the SRG and publishers to negotiate a solution. The Federal Council should increase the pressure on the parties involved. In spring 2012, the Commission intends to discuss further developments with Media Minister Doris Leuthard.

Despite the No to Reimann's initiative, the total ban is not yet off the table. The plenary session of the Council of States will decide. (SDA)

Futurecom: twisting the words in reporters' mouths

Reporters Without Borders advocates for press freedom and the rights of journalists worldwide. Futurecom is promoting the organization with a banner campaign that illustrates a insidious form of censorship.

Reporters are thereby turned into false reporters. This does not even require deleting or inserting anything. Rearranging the existing words is already enough to twist the meaning of a piece of information. This is what the banners created by Futurecom are supposed to show: Twisting the words in the reporters' mouths is a simple game.

Last but not least: The anti-smoking machine

A vending machine set up in the Canadian province of British Columbia rewards smokers for every cigarette they don't smoke—with cookies, flowers, or badminton rackets.

The action was initiated by the organization Quitters Unite. Whether the vending machine manages to turn smokers into non-smokers remains questionable. Nevertheless, a nice action. Of course, a video about it is circulating on the net:

Radio Basel: Uvek approves complete takeover by Kögel

German entrepreneur Karlheinz Kögel has been granted permission to take full ownership of Radio Basel. The Federal Department of the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications (UVEK) has approved the sale of Christian Heeb's shares to co-owner Kögel.

With its decision, the Uvek has simultaneously approved two changes in ownership of the licensed Radio Basel that require authorization, according to a press release issued on Thursday. On the one hand, "Medien für Erwachsene AG" (MFE) has increased its stake in Radio Basel from 67 to 100 percent. Radio Nostalgie (Paris) and numerous small shareholders have left the Radio Basel shareholder base. On the other hand, Heeb has sold his 50 percent share in Media Clearing Center - which MFE owns 100 percent - to Kögel. As a result of these changes, Kögel now owns 100 percent of Radio Basel.

Karlheinz Kögel does not own any other radio or television stations. According to the Uvek, Radio Basel assures that it will continue to meet all licensing requirements, in particular the programming mandate focused on the Basel region.

Radio Basel received its license - at that time under the name Radio Basel 1 - from the Uvek in October 2008 as the second commercial local radio station in Basel alongside Radio Basilisk. In June 2009, MFE acquired a majority stake in Radio Basel from Basler Zeitung Medien and introduced a strongly journalistic program concept.

The Group has now confirmed this, as well as the outlook for an increase in net income with moderate revenue growth. (SDA)

Der Landbote and Publicitas end cooperation

Ziegler Druck- und Verlags-AG and Publicitas will end their long-standing cooperation for the placement of advertisements in the Landbote, the Winterthurer Stadtanzeiger and the Winterthurer Kombi as of December 31, 2011.

Publicitas will remove the titles from its offering and no longer offer them in the advertising market, according to a statement from Ziegler. The combinations "Zürcher Regionalzeitungen" (ZRZ) and "Stellen Nordost" are not affected by this and can continue to be handled by Publicitas.

The Landbote sales and administration team, headed by advertising manager Roland Alt, is also prepared to meet the needs of existing Publicitas customers, the statement continues. Peter Menzato is available as usual for major national advertising customers and agencies.

Association "info-en-danger" dissolved

The association «info-en-danger» (Media in Danger), founded in 2005 to defend journalistic ethics and freedom of expression, has dissolved. The association had brought together some 600 journalists and supporters from French-speaking Switzerland.

According to a communiqué issued at a general meeting, the members of "info-en-danger" found that the aim of raising public awareness of the problems facing the printed press had been partially achieved. Independent and credible media reporting is a fundamental right of citizens and a duty for journalists and publishers, the association had always emphasized. One of the main demands had also been that advertising should be clearly separated from editorial contributions. (SDA)
