Comprehensive tobacco advertising ban demanded
Current restrictions on advertising for cigarettes and other tobacco products do not do enough to protect young people from tobacco. Prevention experts therefore want to impose a comprehensive ban on tobacco advertising and tobacco industry sponsorship.
More than 200 experts gathered in Bern on Thursday and Friday for the 2nd National Tobacco Prevention Conference. In addition to the Swiss Working Group for Tobacco Prevention (AT), sponsors include the federal government, the cantonal health directors, the Lung and Cancer Leagues, the Heart Foundation and the Swiss Medical Association (FMH).
A comprehensive ban on tobacco advertising is the only way to make progress in protecting people from harmful cigarettes, said AT President Bruno Meili. "But it is relatively difficult to achieve success without antagonizing the tobacco industry." Concrete steps could therefore not be named.
Tobacco advertising aimed at young people is prohibited, said AT Managing Director Verena El Fehri. But this has not helped. For example, the commuter newspapers frequently read by young people are not explicitly aimed at young people. Cigarette advertising is permitted in them. According to the experts, research results also show that less passive smoking reduces the risk of suffering a heart attack. The smoking bans enshrined in law throughout the country are judged by the experts to be inadequate. Many employees in the hospitality industry are still exposed to the blue haze.
