With 18 percent more entries than in the previous year, the competition of trade journals from Europe, Eastern Europe and the Middle East was very high in terms of both quality and quantity. A total of 3738 entries from 588 agencies competed for the prizes. Of the 48 participating countries, Switzerland was the number 4 competitor with 14 agencies and 335 individual entries, behind Germany with 803 entries, France with 478 and Sweden with 375. For the sake of clarity: in a print campaign, for example, all individual subjects are counted as entries, while a film counts as 1 entry.
After four intensive days of visioning and judging by the representatives of the 48 trade journals, this great diligence on the part of Swiss creatives was reflected in a similarly exceptional result for Switzerland on Friday evening. The representative of Werbewoche was condemned to be a "neutral" spectator in numerous votes because a Swiss entry was in the final. In the end, four agencies won seven Epicas. Which of these will be counted as silver and which as bronze can only be determined after an analysis of all the scores on Monday.
However, four "Grand Prix" were chosen in a final vote in Paris - which means gold. For the first time in the 25-year history of the Epicas, a "Grand Prix" went to Switzerland. Spillmann Felser Leo Burnett won gold in the "Press" category with the wordplay in the campaign for Swiss Life. SFLB also wins another Epica in the "Promotions & Activation" category for Micasa with the idea "50 percent discount - if a piece of furniture has the same name...".
Ruf Lanz wins a poster award for the Lucerne Classic Music Festival with the poster where an "emergency exit" signal light shines above every box in the concert hall because a concert with experimental music is on the program. The second Epica for Ruf Lanz is in the "Film" category with the Hyundai commercial, where the VW President is filmed with a real "hidden camera" as he wonders why Hyundai can do what VW has never been able to do before.
Two Epicas go to the Y&R Group. The film with Hillary Clinton and Sarkozy for the SonntagsZeitung was a lot of fun for the jury. The illustrations that have just been awarded eleven Clios, which make music and sounds "visible" for Phonak, were also well received in Paris and won a silver or bronze Epica.
In the "Press" category, Remy Fabrikant also received an Epica after his Bronze Lion in Cannes for his Hakle ad "See you later" - if the newsprint on which this ad was printed is recycled.
The Facebook campaign for Obermutten by Jung von Matt/Limmat was only narrowly eliminated in the final round of discussions. A large proportion of the jury wanted to give this idea an Epica in the Social Media category. Walker's films for Möbel Pfister also caused a lot of laughter, but were then put back on the shortlist in the competition against a veritable festival of Ikea films from numerous countries. Otrivin for Novartis by Saatchi & Saatchi entertained the jury. However, the films with the "open mouth" due to breathing difficulties did not make it off the shortlist. In Cannes, the same idea was awarded a Gold Lion. That should leave a few more mouths open...
Further Swiss shortlist places were also awarded to Wirz and Publicis as well as SFLB, Jung von Matt and Y&R. More on this in the print edition of the upcoming Werbewoche. Andreas Panzeri
