Online shopping is more popular than ever

Online shopping is more popular than ever before - Nielsen and Net-Metrix analyze the usage behavior of online shoppers and place Ricardo in first place, followed by Amazon and Ebay.

According to Nielsen Net View panel data, more than 2 million Swiss people used at least one of the leading e-commerce offerings in November 2011. According to the Net-Metrix Profile study, shopping on the Internet has increased sharply over the last three years. The proportion of weekly online purchases on the Internet has risen by more than 20 percent. This has benefited numerous providers who, according to Nielsen NetView, have been able to significantly expand their user numbers compared to the previous year - first and foremost Zalando, which was able to increase its user base 14-fold compared to November 2010. In addition to the fashion retailer, whose offering was visited at least once by around 230,000 Swiss Internet users in November, numerous other e-commerce retailers benefited from surfers' increased interest, including Digitech and Coop@home, for example, which also saw strong growth. However, the leader - as in the previous year - remains the online marketplace Ricardo, followed by the international players Amazon and Ebay.

An examination of the composition of the user base reveals that the large offers Ricardo and Amazon are used by a slightly above-average number of men, with a share of 54.2 percent and 53.5 percent respectively. Zalando, on the other hand, has 66.4 percent female users. In addition, the online fashion house seems to be particularly popular with younger users. The age group between 18 and 24 years is the most popular here with an affinity index of 190 (Composition Index according to Unique Audience, 100 = expected normal distribution on the Internet). are particularly well represented, while Amazon and Ricardo attract users between the ages of 25 and 49 in particular.

Across all offers, 61% of the Swiss now shop on the Internet. As the current study Net-Metrix-Profile 2011-2 shows, 21.5 percent of users even order goods online on a weekly basis or more frequently. Among male Internet users, the proportion of weekly online shoppers is significantly higher (24 percent) than among women (18 percent). From 2008 to the present, however, the proportion of female users who shop online at least once a week has increased more sharply (by 25 percent) than among men (by 16 percent). So women are slowly catching up in terms of online shopping. The largest proportion of online shoppers is also to be found among the 30 to 39 age group: Of users in this age group, 71 percent use online shopping occasionally and 27 percent even do so weekly. The greatest growth, however, is among young people and users over the age of 50. The biggest increases over the past three years have been among the following groups: Women, teens and those over 50. As in the trend from 2008 to 2011, Internet activities in the area of online shopping are expected to continue to increase in the future.

Renzen Communications: Campaign for Radio Argovia morning show

The Aarau-based agency Renzen Communications has come up with a campaign for Radio Argovia featuring slices of toast to go with the morning show. So now, every morning, the hosts' heads pop out of the toaster.

"Simply a good morning!" Under this motto, early risers are well informed and entertained every day between 5:00 and 9:00 a.m. by the Argovia morning show led by three new faces. Renzen Communications was commissioned to launch a mini-campaign to introduce the two new presenters and the new presenter to the audience. The result is a witty key visual that fits the morning theme, in which three slices of toast with the faces of the presenters jump out of the toaster.

Posters in F200 format are used at selected, highly frequented poster sites in the morning, as well as advertisements in the Aargauer Zeitung and 20 Minuten.

Responsible at Radio Argovia: Marco Kugel (Head of Marketing) and Nicole Meier (Communications Planner). Responsible at Renzen Communications: Hanno Lietz (CD), Achim Kaufmann (AD), Marc Prell (image editing) and Alain Götschi (consulting).

Mainland: Mysterious code posters for code professionals

The year 2012 began in St. Gallen with a mysterious advertising campaign: Large posters throughout the city show nothing but a blue QR code. The solution to the mystery is no secret—at least not to people who know how to crack codes.

Festland, with locations in St. Gallen and Zurich, has launched a special poster campaign. The white posters show nothing more than a blue code. If you have a cell phone with a code reader function, or if you know a little about codes, you will quickly find the solution to the riddle. If the poster is photographed with the code reader of a cell phone, one is directed to a mobile website of Festland. Here one learns that the agency codefeste is looking for reinforcement for its web team. Festland invites all those who feel attracted by the video tour and project examples to apply immediately via cell phone.

Energy Basel about to take off?

A new radio station is to be developed at Radio Basel. Rumors have been around for a long time, but now the project is to become concrete.

20 Minuten online reports a system breakdown which is supposed to prove this: The broadcasting failure had occurred on Thursday morning. All of a sudden, the entire system at Radio Basel collapsed. Instead, an unknown network called Energy.local was displayed on the screen in the radio studio. For 20 Minuten online, it is now definitely clear that Radio Basel is secretly working on a change of station concept in the background - away from the text-heavy station with a focus on editorial contributions, towards the entertainment and lifestyle-oriented Energy format. An internal information event for employees is also planned for this week. And the adaptation of the infrastructure is also to be completed in the next few days.

Blick.ch also reports on the intensification of rumors about a cooperation between Energy and Radio Basel. According to the portal, a staff meeting at Radio Basel is even scheduled for this evening.

Ringier, the owner of Energy, did not want to give any information to Werbewoche. Rumors about possible cooperations would not be commented on, they said.

New online presence for the Migros magazines

The Migros weekly newspapers are launching their new online portals on Monday morning. The portals feature a more modern design and new functions that are intended to actively involve users.

The heart of the home page is the interactive cockpit: Migros magazine articles, photo spreads, and user-generated content are visible here at a glance. The display can be easily customized - with one click, the page view is adapted to personal interests. Under "Life" and "Cooking," registered users can publish their own content such as travel tips and recipes they have created themselves. This function will gradually be extended to the other sections, enabling users to play an active role in shaping the weekly newspaper.

The new platforms are intended to enhance the multimedia presence of the Migros magazines and address new target groups. Users can exchange information with other interested parties and with the editorial team. But portraits, articles on family and social topics, and information about Migros' commitment can also still be found on the portals.

The channels are also linked to Facebook and Twitter. Design and technical implementation of the new online presence were carried out in collaboration with the Zurich agencies Divio and Censhare.

Media Focus publishes trend report on search engine marketing

For the first time, the market research firm Media Focus is publishing a trend report on developments in search engine marketing, based on data collected in 2011.

The Trend Report shows how budget spending on search engine advertising is developing by industry and which industries are affected by brand bidding and ad hijacking to what extent. The Trend Report is supplemented by a special analysis, each of which examines a current topic in the context of SEA and SEO.

Since the beginning of 2011, Media Focus has been collecting data on the activities of advertisers in search engine marketing as part of its "Search Engine Research" business unit, in cooperation with its technology partner Xamine. The data can be used to analyze markets and competitors and to optimize the company's own Adwords campaigns or to sustainably improve visibility via the disciplines of SEA and SEO. Furthermore, the technology makes it possible to show in detail who is operating with third-party brand terms or ad texts.

The SEM Trend Report covers ten industries and aims to give readers an initial insight into the areas of analysis described.

SFLB: Cheers with Aktifit from Emmi

With its latest commercial, the Spillmann/Felser/Leo Burnett agency has not only chosen to promote drinking Emmi’s Aktifit, but has also decided to raise a toast to bad weather—or good friendship.

A bottle of Aktifit should be part of the daily rituals with which you take care of yourself and your family. And where drinking becomes a ritual, a toast is also made. Because there are plenty of reasons to raise a glass, or rather a bottle of Aktifit: the new TV commercial toasts to bad weather, to a stronger immune system, to better concentration or simply to good friendship. Whether on the football pitch, at work or in the comfort of your own home - no place is unsuitable for a toast. The spot is now on air.

NZZ: Supervisory Board discusses situation around Konrad Hummler

The delicate situation involving Konrad Hummler, chairman of the board of directors of the NZZ Media Group, is set to be discussed by the supervisory board. Hummler, as a partner at the private bank Wegelin, is embroiled in the U.S. tax dispute.

According to the Sonntagszeitung, NZZ board member Franz Steinegger is asking Hummler to raise the matter. Due to the latest news, a briefing by Mr. Hummler on the matter would be of interest to the NZZ board of directors, the former FDP president said. So far, possible problems of Bank Wegelin with US authorities have not been an issue in the board of directors.

In response to a question from the Sonntagszeitung, Hummler himself said: "It is up to the NZZ Board of Directors to decide under what circumstances I will become an unacceptable burden as Chairman of the Board of the NZZ Media Group. This assessment is the subject of an evaluation of the situation in the context of the disputes between the Swiss financial center and the USA.

First Sunday edition of the Basler Zeitung published

The Basel media landscape has been enriched by another facet: the Sunday version of the Basler Zeitung was published for the first time on Sunday. It is 48 pages thick.

The Hildebrand affair provides the lead story on the front page. Under the title "Die Geschniegelten" ("The cut and dried"), the SNB Chairman is presented as the "prototype of a new generation in power" and placed in a row with the German ex-Defense Minister zu Guttenberg, the German Federal President Christian Wulff and the former Austrian Finance Minister Karl-Heinz Grasser. In the inside section, former Federal Councillor Christoph Blocher also comments on the Hildebrand case in an interview. A second major interview was conducted by the Baz with the President of the Basel government, Guy Morin, who will return to work on Monday following cancer surgery and plans to run for re-election in the fall.

Layout hardly differs

In terms of layout, the Sunday edition of the Baz hardly differs from the others, but the design is more generous and "magazine-like". However, the Sunday version is clearly different in terms of its structure: it is published as a two-volume newspaper, whereas the Baz comprises four volumes during the week. Baz editor-in-chief Markus Somm, who is also responsible for the Sonntagsblatt, does not see it as a weekly magazine, but as a "seventh edition". However, this will be geared towards the special reading needs on Sundays with more time and leisure.

Circulation of 230,000 copies

The Baz had announced the project for a Sunday edition even before the most recent change of ownership at the end of November 2011. Contrary to what was stated at the time, the additional edition does not have to be realized with the same number of staff. According to editor-in-chief Somm, the Sunday edition will require five to ten additional jobs. The Sunday edition of the Baz will be published in the first twelve weeks with a circulation of around 230,000 copies. These will be distributed free of charge to households in the greater Basel area and can be obtained free of charge from boxes, as publishing director Paul Herzog told the news agency SDA when asked.

Free of charge until the end of March

The Sonntagsblatt will become chargeable from April 1. Baz subscribers will receive the seventh issue at a reduced surcharge. Herzog is hoping for 20,000 to 30,000 subscribers. The publishing director assumes that the new project will achieve a "black zero" financially relatively quickly. In any case, the advertising industry has reacted positively to the Sunday edition.

In the Basel region, AZ Medien, which owns the Basellandschaftliche Zeitung, has already expanded its Sunday offering: Since the end of August 2011, Der Sonntag has been published with a regional bundle for both Basel instead of just Baselland. AZ Medien also plans to launch the daily newspaper BZ Basel for Basel and the surrounding area this month. This is a sister paper to the Basellandschaftliche Zeitung. (SDA).
