Swiss history through the eyes of press photographers

The Swiss National Museum in Zurich is presenting an exhibition that illustrates recent Swiss history from the perspective of press photographers. The exhibition offers the first-ever glimpse into the Swiss National Museum’s photo archive, which contains several million images.

Entitled "C'est la vie", the exhibition shows political events, episodes from everyday life, unforgettable moments, snapshots of well-known personalities and portraits of everyday heroes, as the National Museum writes in a press release. The images come from the photo archives of the press agencies "Presse DiffusionLausanne" and "Actualité Suisse Lausanne", which were transferred to the Swiss National Museum in 2006. Together, the two archives contain millions of negatives, paper prints and slides from the period between 1940 and 2000.

When cataloging the archives, it quickly became apparent that there are numerous treasures to be found in the image collections, writes the National Museum. The diversity, range and aesthetic quality of the photographic material is remarkable and ideally complements the museum's own collection.

The exhibition is divided into nine thematic areas. They also provide information on the development of press photography from the early photo reportages in the 1940s to current photojournalism.

Until the 1960s, photo reports in illustrated magazines were the most important medium for bringing the world into the homes of readers. Richly illustrated reports on important events appeared every week in numerous weeklies. It often took hours, if not days, for a picture to be ready for print. The exhibition at the Landesmuseum uses original objects to illustrate the work processes of the past, from the darkroom to the editorial office. The contrast is provided by a look into a press agency of today, which, thanks to new methods of image transmission, brings brand-new images into the daily press.

The "C'est la vie" exhibition will open next Wednesday. The 92-page magazine "C'est la vie. Swiss press photos since 1940" with 146 illustrations. (SDA)

Karlheinz Kögel, the former sole owner of the Radio Basel Group, is bringing Ringier and the NRJ Group Paris on board as partners for the Basel-based private radio station. Radio Basel will become Energy Basel. The new station will launch on January 13, 2012.

On Friday, January 13, 2012, Radio Basel will become Energy Basel, Radio Basel announced on Tuesday morning. Ringier will take a 9.8 percent stake and NRJ Group Paris a 5.2 percent stake in the Radio Basel Group. The previous sole owner, Karlheinz Kögel, will retain the remaining 85 percent and serve as chairman of the board of directors. Kögel is pleased: "I have found the right partners in Ringier and the Energy Group. The success of the Energy Group in Switzerland and abroad is remarkable, and I am convinced that we can benefit from this know-how," he is quoted as saying in the press release.

After Energy Zurich and Energy Bern, Energy Basel is another radio station in German-speaking Switzerland under Brand Energy. "It's great that we are now present with Energy in the three largest cities in German-speaking Switzerland," says Dani Büchi, Managing Director of the Energy Switzerland Group.

According to the announcement, Energy Basel's programming is aimed at the young and urban target group in the greater Basel area. The focus will be on a strong editorial team with local information as well as music and entertainment. Together with the new partners, Karlheinz Kögel will again invest intensively in the next few years to make Energy Basel a successful station. The launch of Energy Basel will be accompanied by a large-scale communication campaign in and around Basel. In addition, the first Energy event is to take place in Basel in the next few weeks.

Operation already discontinued

Radio Basel has already stopped broadcasting at midnight. From Tuesday, January 10, to Thursday, January 12, 2012, Music-Non-Stop will run on 101.7 MHz. On Friday, January 13, 2012, at 5 a.m., Energy Basel will go on the air with "Energy - Mein Morgen".

The program and management of Energy Basel will be taken over ad interim by Eva Nidecker and Hans Knobloch. The 31-year-old from Basel, who started her career at Tele Basel, has been working in radio and television in front of and behind the camera for ten years. The 48-year-old Hans Knobloch has held various management positions for radio and media companies throughout Europe for almost 20 years.

According to Eva Nidecker, Energy Basel is starting with a "relatively small team" of 20 people, including seven in the editorial department and six in moderation. New employees will be hired soon. Media reports about 8 to 9 dismissals from the Radio Basel team, meanwhile, none of those responsible wanted to comment.

Imprint criticizes terminations

Meanwhile, the journalists' association Impressum and the press association of both Basel spoke of a further nine dismissals in the night to Tuesday and around 20 terminations since the end of 2011 in a statement. Imprint is investigating whether there was an unlawful mass dismissal. They also said that the duty of consultation with regard to media ethics had been violated. Imprint and the Press Association demanded the withdrawal of the dismissals and reserved the right to take legal action on behalf of those affected, the statement added. Imprint will also ask the Federal Office of Communications (Bakom) to ensure compliance with the concession provisions on working conditions and journalistic quality.

Hinderling Volkart: Nomination for "Site of the year

At the Awwwards (formerly CSS Awards) the project "360° Langstrasse Zurich" by Hinderling Volkart was nominated for the "Site of the year". Only 15 websites from all over the world are nominated for this title.

The year before last, a project by the digital agency from Zurich's Kreis 4 already made it to "Site of the day" and thus to one of the 365 best websites of the year: in 2010, it was "Lost in val Sinestra" for Swisscom. With the nomination of the project "360° Langstrasse Zurich" for Swiss Television, which was also named "Site of the month" in October in addition to "Site of the day," Hinderling Volkart has now been able to set an international milestone for the second time, as the agency writes in a statement.

In the Awwwards, each project is judged not only on design, but also on creativity, usability and content. Voting for the "Site of the year" is open to the public.

Aroma: event architecture of the Fifa Ballon d'Or Gala

The 2012 soccer season kicked off with the FIFA Ballon d’Or Gala on January 9, where the World Soccer Player of the Year was honored. The prestigious awards were presented at the Kongresshaus in Zurich during a festive ceremony designed by the Zurich-based agency Aroma.

On Monday, the football world chose the best of their guild. Nominees included Christiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Jose Mourinho and Alex Ferguson. For the third time in a row - and once again with Lionel Messi as the winner - Aroma was responsible for the design and staging of the gala night. More than 1'000 guests attended the awards ceremony at the Kongresshaus, including not only the big players in football but also numerous media representatives. From the red carpet reception to the aperitif, the dinner in a dignified setting and the Media Zone, the Kongresshaus was transformed into a venue for the crème de la crème of the international soccer world.

The look developed by Aroma is characterized by noble black - playfully offset with polygons - and a textured gold surface that thematically picks up on the Ballon d'Or. These elements run as a common thread through the event and can be found from the invitation to the outside of the congress center to the rooms inside. In this way, two-dimensional communication and space merge into one. The arch motif developed by Aroma is a further guiding principle running through the event. The gold-look installations provide a framework for the rooms and derive from the formal language of Fifa.

Roger Köppel: "That was not agitation"

Weltwoche publisher Roger Köppel stands by his position: The article in which his newspaper calls the resigned SNB President Philipp Hildebrand a «crook» and holds him personally responsible for the foreign exchange transactions contains no errors or defamatory statements.

"The story is true," Köppel asserted on Monday on Swiss television's "Schawinski" program. Hildebrand was unable to prove the opposite, i.e. that his wife had commissioned the transactions and not he himself. The Weltwoche editor-in-chief stands by his claim that his newspaper "uncovered that the top boss was personally speculating in foreign exchange". Köppel remains silent about the source of this alleged revelation. However, he went on to say that it was not important who had ordered the transactions. The account bore Hildebrand's name, so he was responsible for it.

Köppel shrugged off the accusation of hate speech made by presenter Roger Schawinski during the broadcast. "That was not incitement. Mr Hildebrand destabilized himself." Köppel was not pleased that the demand for his resignation made by Weltwoche was fulfilled on Monday, as he emphasized. Revelations worthy of a banana republic are nothing to be happy about. (SDA)

In this role, he looked after corporate groups and SMEs in the fields of information and communications technology (ICT), logistics, insurance and consumer goods, as well as associations and official institutions.

Wall Street Journal launches German offshoot

The market for current German business media has gained a new publication. On Tuesday, the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) launched its German edition—though only online and not as a traditional newspaper.

The editors promised their readers "International business news in German. Only online, never at the newsstand". The makers of the German Wall Street Journal sit with their colleagues at the Dow Jones business service in Frankfurt. Both belong to Rupert Murdoch's NewsCorp. The new editorial team is headed by Knut Engelmann, who was once global head of news at the Reuters business agency.

Engelmann was combative at the start. In a welcome note, he announced that he would provide his readers with "the latest and most exclusive news and background reports from around the world every day". With the "largest international business newspaper behind him", his editorial team will succeed.

Engelmann also referred to the WSJ network of "over 2000 correspondents worldwide". The WSJ produces a European edition in London, for example. (SDA)
