MMV Online to launch next summer

With MMV Online, a new media project is being launched for Central Switzerland. From next summer, an online newspaper will provide more diversity of opinion in the Lucerne and Zug regions.

The Portal is based on the model of an online newspaper and aims to offer visitors critical, non-partisan journalism, according to a press release issued on Monday. The news offering will be supplemented by a regional service offering. As yet unnamed projects are to be produced by three to four editors and freelancers. According to the press release, MMV Online sees itself as a high-profile addition to daily local newspapers. "We are convinced that open-minded people in Central Switzerland want more up-to-date information than the existing offering. This is especially true for the regional sector", Christian Hug is certain. The 43-year-old from Zug has been Managing Director since the beginning of the year and can look back on a wealth of experience as an editor and head of electronic media.

Chairman of the Board of Directors Nick Mijnssen is convinced that the regional news portal meets a broad need. "In Zug, but especially in Lucerne, I have long heard how much differentiated regional reporting is missing. One that also takes a critical view and examines issues from different perspectives." As an independent medium, Mijnssen believes that we have the best prerequisites for this.

The project was initiated almost two years ago to break up the regional information monopoly of LZ Medien. In the meantime, the preparatory work with the help of a consultancy firm has progressed to the point where a wide range of specialists can be involved. There is also an intensive exchange with other Swiss media projects. In addition to a public limited company, which is responsible for operations, the M.M.V. (Meinungen.Medien.Vielfalt.) association forms the supporting body. Former National Councillor Judith Stamm (CVP), Zug entrepreneur Nick Mijnssen and Ballwil trustee Beat Bachmann sit on the founding board.

The name of the portal at launch is still open. The public will be able to submit suggestions and vote for the name via Facebook. The aim is to be ready next summer. An editorial manager and advertisement sellers are currently still being sought.

The advertising giant takes a softer approach

Publicitas is currently engaged in negotiations—some of them tough—with various publishers. However, to avoid risking further rifts, it appears to have recently become less insistent on enforcing its pricing model for advertising placement.

At PubliGroupe's annual press conference a year ago, CEO Hanspeter Rohner reported that Publicitas (P) had adjusted its business model and "extended almost all of its partnerships with Swiss publishers on this basis" as of January 1, 2011. But shortly thereafter, Werbewoche revealed something else: For the first time, two in-house newspaper publishers, W. Gassmann (Bieler Tagblatt/Journal du Jura) and Mengis Druck und Verlag (Walliser Bote), decided not to cooperate with P. The reason: they could not agree on the new P pricing model, which bases placement agreements on a fixed base amount per placed ad plus a commission based on sales. The consequence of the break: P announced that it was deleting the titles mentioned in its system and would no longer place ads for them, not even at the express request of the customer. In short: P broke with the universal agency.

In the meantime, as is well known, the situation has become more accentuated: In the last six months, the Basler Zeitung Medien and Ziegler Druck (Der Landbote and Winterhurer Stadtanzeiger) also terminated their cooperation with P. The publishers are now in the process of doing so. Now, Werbewoche wanted to know more and asked 40 independent and self-directed publishers what their contractual relationship with P was like. The result: 15 of the publishers inquired will remain under Publicitas management in 2012, but in one case the contract has been terminated. All the other publishers inquired about are self-managed publishers, but only seven of them have a new contract with P - five with and two without (!) a base amount per ad. Four publishers are currently in the middle of renegotiations, four are contractless, as mentioned above, and P has not yet made any representations to nine others. And in one case (Migros Media), Werbewoche received no information.

15 publishers are in P-direction
The 15 publishing houses that will remain under P management in 2012 are essentially known: In addition to the NZZ Group with St. Galler Tagblatt and Neuer Luzerner Zeitung, these are Anzeiger Region Bern, Touring, Le Temps, Le Nouvelliste, La Liberté, the Hersant titles Express, Impartial and Le Quotidien Jurassien, as well as the Ticino newspapers Corriere del Ticino, La Regione Ticino and Giornale del Popolo. Werbewoche has no information on the duration of the contracts or on the question of whether the (more recent) management contracts also provide for base amounts for advertisements. The only thing that is clear is that changes are imminent at Neue Fricktaler Zeitung. "We have terminated our management contract with P, and negotiations on further cooperation are underway," said publisher Walter Herzog. He left it open in which direction it will go.

Reorganization at the Meteomedia Group

The European operations of the private weather service provider, currently consolidated within Meteomedia AG in Gais and Meteomedia GmbH in Bochum, will in the future be managed by the newly established Meteomedia (Europa) AG, headquartered in Appenzell, Switzerland.

In addition to Jörg Kachelmann (controlling majority), private investors from Southeast Asia around attorney Martin Kurer, Manila/Zurich, member of the Board of Directors of Meteomedia AG, hold a significant stake in this company. In the course of this reorganization, a "mutually satisfactory solution was found for all shareholders of Jörg Kachelmann Produktions AG, the previous holding company of the Meteomedia Group", according to the press release. This also made it possible to settle all legal disputes among the previous shareholders.

Jörg Kachelmann and the new investors then founded Meteomedia International Ltd. Hong Kong, which combines the activities of the Meteomedia Group in Asia. This company holds a significant stake in Meteomedia Philippines Corp., which is responsible for the "1000 Weather Stations for the Philippines" project together with the Aboititz Foundation. According to the press release, ten employees are already working for Meteomedia International in Manila.

Last but not least: Nipplegate for a better world

As is well known, Facebook is an American company and therefore always acts in the name of public decency. The sight of a woman’s breast, for example, clearly goes too far. A so-called “Nipplegate” is supposed to help.

But it's not just wannabe amateur porn stars, housewives hoping for a lucrative side job, drunken it-girls on bar counters and revealing topless beauties on the beach in Hawaii that are a thorn in the side of the moral guardians or Nipplegate. No, mothers who engage in the most natural, sexless, unobscene and primal of all activities - breastfeeding - must also expect to be banned from Facebook. If they post photos of themselves and their baby doing just that.

Of course, that doesn't suit everyone. The website Tera.ca for example, collects information on deleted photos showing mothers breastfeeding their babies - almost 400 cases have now been collected. A Facebook group has even been set up under the name "Hey Facebook, breastfeeding is not obscene!". It already has over 3,700 members. In Australia, the Minister for Women in the province of South Australia also called on Facebook to stop preventing the depiction of breastfeeding mothers. She announced that she would write directly to Mark Zuckerberg on this matter. Protests are also planned in several European cities. The protesters are right. Down with the demonization of breastfeeding. And preferably also down with Nipplegate. Unless Facebook introduces Dickgate. If women aren't allowed to, men shouldn't be allowed to either. After all, we live in the age of equality.
