2012 could be a very dangerous year for journalists

2012 could be the deadliest year for journalists since records began 15 years ago. The International Press Institute (IPI) issued this warning on World Press Freedom Day.

By April 30, the Institute had registered 43 journalists killed worldwide. On Thursday, the IPI launched a global campaign to protect press freedom. According to the IPI, many newspapers are publishing a large advertisement free of charge, including papers from Argentina, Australia, India, Liberia, Namibia, Poland, Serbia, South Africa, Taiwan, Turkey and the USA. Newspapers from Switzerland are also taking part.

According to IPI in Vienna, 2011 was the year with the second highest number of victims, with 102 journalists killed. The highest number of journalists killed was in 2009, when the death toll was 110 - 32 reporters alone were killed in an attack on an election campaign convoy in the Philippines.

Syria is reportedly the most dangerous country for journalists this year. In the first three months alone, eleven reporters have already been killed there, including foreign journalists. There are also a particularly high number of victims among investigative journalists in Mexico. Unscrupulous drug dealers commissioned ten journalist murders there in 2011 alone.

Together with the Austrian Foreign Ministry, the IPI is trying to strengthen the regulations of the UN Human Rights Council for the protection of journalists. By the end of the year, Austria will submit a resolution on the safety of journalists to the Human Rights Council.

Even in countries where freedom of the press prevails, journalists are
murdered, often in connection with investigations into organized crime and corruption. This is usually carried out by contract killers or corrupt police officers, the IPI reported. (SDA/DPA)

Eastern Switzerland Radio and Television Prize goes to Friedrich Kappeler

Friedrich Kappeler, a documentary filmmaker from Frauenfeld, has been awarded the 2012 Radio and Television Prize by SRG Ostschweiz. Kappeler, who, among other works, directed the 2002 film «Mani Matter – Warum syt Dir so truurig,» is being honored for his body of work.

The prize, endowed with CHF 10,000, will be presented in Frauenfeld after the summer vacations, as announced by the Thurgau State Chancellery on Monday. The prize money is donated by the cantons of Eastern Switzerland.

Born in 1949, Kappeler has made short films, a television feature film and eight feature-length documentaries, most of them in co-production with Swiss television. In 2004, he also portrayed the clown Dimitri.

According to the communiqué, Kappeler's films are of great poetic power. They are untrendy and old-fashioned in the best sense of the word, with an inner calm and give the characters and actions the necessary space for depth of content. (SDA)

Last but not least: When the Nutella illusion bursts

It's common knowledge that Americans are world champions at filing lawsuits. One mother carried on this tradition by suing the manufacturer of Nutella—and walked away with a multi-million-dollar settlement.

The lady had accused Ferrero USA of advertising the chocolate cream as a "healthy and nutritious breakfast". And this despite the fact that Nutella is probably less healthy than a melted bar of chocolate. A clear case of misleading advertising. And while the woman in this country would at best have been sent a Nutella bath towel as compensation, Ferrero USA has to make payments totaling a good three million dollars to Nutella buyers: Anyone who has bought Nutella in the USA in the past three to four years can claim a payment of up to 20 dollars.

Incidentally, according to the court documents, Ferrero USA has not admitted that its cruelly delicious product is cruelly unhealthy. However, the company has announced that it will "modify certain statements" about Nutella. And if this means that a few fewer mothers believe that Nutella is the basis for their offspring's healthy development, then the whole thing will have been a good thing after all.
