Harald Schmidt: Switch to pay-TV channel Sky
Entertainer Harald Schmidt is moving his late-night show from Sat.1 to the pay-TV channel Sky. Following its final broadcast on free-to-air TV on Thursday, his «Harald Schmidt Show» will take an extended summer break and then return to pay-TV in the fall.
As before, there will be three programs a week from Tuesdays to Thursdays, but at 10.15 p.m. - one hour earlier than on Sat.1, as Sky announced on Wednesday.
After an excursion to ARD, Schmidt returned to Sat.1 with his late-night concept in the fall of 2011, but the ratings were far below expectations. It only reached an average of 690,000 viewers this year; the market share was a miserable 6.5 percent - in the advertising-relevant target group of 14 to 49-year-olds, it was even only 5.0 percent. Too little for the Sat.1 management, who pulled the ripcord and ended the show before the actual summer break.
With his future TV home - the pay channels Sky Atlantic HD and Sky Hits/ HD - Schmidt is unlikely to have any problems with ratings: The programs are encrypted and can only be viewed by subscribers, ratings are of secondary importance.
Is it possible that Schmidt will sometimes be available unencrypted on Sky as an incentive for non-Sky customers? That is not currently planned, said a spokesperson. However, it could not be completely ruled out.
For Schmidt fans - and the presenter himself - practically everything else will remain the same: The program will be recorded in the same Cologne studio as before, and will continue to be produced by Kogel & Schmidt GmbH - just on behalf of Sky. (SDA/DPA)
