Last but not least: Facebook's debut heralded with stock chaos and lawsuit

Facebook got off to a rocky start on the New York Stock Exchange. After a rapid rise of about 12 percent shortly after the market opened, the social network's stock fell to just above its offering price.

The closing price of the share was 38.23 dollars, which is not a big gain - just 0.6% to be precise. According to the Wall Street Journal, the only reason the share price did not fall below the issue price was because the banks involved in the IPO intervened with massive support purchases. Nevertheless, many Facebook employees became millionaires after the IPO was heralded. But the ringing of the bell also meant the start of some unexpected events. The planned start of actual trading was delayed further and further. When the Facebook share was finally able to be traded, the first price was 43 dollars.

The delay has not gone unnoticed by the US Securities and Exchange Commission. According to Tagesschau.de the SEC announced that it wanted to investigate the causes of the technical glitches and the sometimes chaotic trading on the Nasdaq stock exchange. A class action lawsuit was filed by former Facebook users at the same time as the IPO. The plaintiffs are demanding 15 billion dollars in punitive damages and compensation for pain and suffering. The reason for the lawsuit is that the network continued to record their user traces on the internet long after they had logged out of their profile.

At least one thing went absolutely smoothly at the Facebook IPO: When 28-year-old Mark Zuckerberg pressed the symbolic button at the opening of the trading day, the bell rang out on the New York technology exchange Nasdaq, heralding the new trading day.

Confederation pays SRG 20 million a year for Swiss news abroad

In the future, the federal government will pay the SRG up to 20 million francs annually so that it can also broadcast news from Switzerland abroad. Just under half of the funds are earmarked for Swissinfo. The initiative will also support collaboration with the television stations 3Sat and TV5.

On Wednesday, the Federal Council approved a new performance agreement with the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation (SRG). The contract is valid for the years 2013 to 2016. The internet platform Swissinfo.ch will have to accept losses - it will receive around CHF 2 to 3 million less per year.

It was already known that there would be cutbacks at Swissinfo. The news platform will therefore be cutting around 40 full-time positions - a third of its workforce - by the end of 2012. The editorial team will also have to be restructured. However, the cuts are not limited to this: from 2013, Swissinfo will offer information in Russian - in addition to nine other languages. Swissinfo will receive a total of CHF 34.75 million from the federal government over the next four years. That is half of the news platform's budget. The SRG will cover the other half. The agreement also sets out content guidelines. For example, Swissinfo is to be aimed "primarily at an international audience interested in Switzerland".

Over the next four years, the federal government will provide SRG with CHF 26.9 million for its collaboration with the French-language television station TV5MONDE. SRG must now ensure that nine percent of broadcasting time is devoted to Swiss productions. This is an ambitious goal, said Christine Javet from the Federal Office of Communications (Bakom). With TV5 Monde, the participating countries would have a direct say in the programming.

For the German-language channel 3Sat, the performance agreement provides for a ten percent share of broadcasts from Switzerland. SRG will receive a total of CHF 15.9 million for this over the next four years.

The performance agreement also stipulates that SRG will examine ways of making Radiotelevisione svizzera (RSI) broadcasts accessible to an international Italian-speaking audience. According to Javet, SRG must submit concrete ideas to Bakom by the end of the year. (SDA)

LZ Medien: Higher dividend despite drop in profits

The Lucerne-based LZ Media Group's consolidated net income fell by 11.7 percent last year to 10.6 million Swiss francs. Nevertheless, shareholders will receive a higher dividend:

Tuesday's Annual General Meeting in Zug approved an increase of CHF 5 to CHF 105. LZ Group's sales fell to 165.1 (166.4) million francs in 2011. Operating profit (Ebit) was 13.6 (15.6) million francs and net profit 10.6 (12.0) million francs. According to the media release, the decline in sales is mainly the result of lower printing revenues. At 52.4 million Swiss francs, advertising revenues were 4.2 percent higher than the previous year; the increase is due to the acquisition of Anzeiger Luzern. A decline to 41.1 (42.0) million Swiss francs was recorded in subscription and single-unit sales. Sales in the print and calendar business segment fell to CHF 46.8 (50.2) million. By contrast, revenues from electronic media and other revenues rose to 24.8 (23.9) million Swiss francs.

At the end of 2011, the LZ Group employed 555 (562) people, who shared 476 (485) jobs. The LZ Group includes, among others, the Neue Luzerner Zeitung with its regional editions, Radio Pilatus and the local TV station Tele 1. (SDA)
