Media Focus: SEM Trend Report 6/2012 - "EM Special - Soccer Kickoff"

The market research firm Media Focus has published its Trend Report on developments in search engine marketing for the month of May. The special analysis examined which advertisers had already enriched their AdWords campaigns with soccer-related keywords in May and, as a result, what level of visibility they were able to achieve in SEM.

The retail sector recorded the highest increase in SEA budget expenditure, with growth of just 4 percent. The telecommunications sector (+1 percent) halts the growing trend of the previous month; the falling budgets in the banking sector (+1 percent) also stabilize. These even increase minimally in May. SEA spending in the insurance sector (+0 percent) stagnated at the low level of the previous months. Significantly less was spent on SEA in May in the food + beverages sector (-13 percent). Budget spending also fell slightly in the vehicles (-5 percent), cosmetics + personal care (-4 percent), and clothing + lingerie (-3 percent) sectors.

The relatively stable SEA budgets in the month of May could be due to a lack of seasonal events. This writes Media Focus in a statement on Wednesday. The question of how the budgets will develop with regard to the two upcoming sporting events in the summer remains exciting.

Uefa European Football Championship 2012
In this and the next issue of the SEM Trend Report, the focus is on the Uefa European Football Championship 2012. In addition to the soccer teams, there are ten other "players "on the field. UEFA was able to line up ten global sponsors with Adidas, Canon, Carlsberg, Castrol, Coca-Cola, Continental, Hyundai-Kia, McDonald's, Orange and Sharp. In this context, we were interested to find out which other advertisers would like to benefit from this event. To this end, Media Focus analyzed who already enriched their AdWords campaign with football-specific keywords in May and who was able to achieve what visibility in SEM as a result. Next month, the market research company will look back and examine how the advertisers' SEM "match" turned out.

It is striking in the SEA ranking that in the weeks before kick-off Coke.com, with its ticket promotion "Get tickets for UEFA Euro 2012 now", is only one official sponsor among the top 5 SEA advertisers. Together with Cablecom.ch "EM 2012 in HD quality", the two frontrunners in the SEA ranking have a big lead over the other SEA bidders. Puma.ch is jumping on the EM wave as an equipment supplier and is exclusively booking terms from the clothing sector "Squadra Azzurra jerseys now from the equipment supplier in the PUMA online store!". Swiss Post is taking a different approach and is pushing Euro 2012 with Fanbands.ch via its own brand "Show the flag & collect fanbands". The specialist portal for youth soccer Fd21.de is an initiative to promote youth soccer and primarily books terms relating to the Euro 2012 schedule.

The Swiss SEO ranking once again highlights the dominance of German and international websites offering soccer-specific content, Media Focus concludes.

Condor BB/A: Use of target group-specific film versions

In 2011, Condor BB/A produced a KPMG induction film designed to provide an engaging «onboarding» experience for new employees and potential applicants. The approach was to incorporate self-deprecating humor and critical self-reflection into the script.

However, the length of the seven-minute film made it less suitable for flexible use on internet platforms such as YouTube, Facebook or various student networks. The aim was not simply to shorten the film's plot for these specific purposes, but to adapt it dramaturgically in its entirety.

A trailer suitable for the defined target group was produced from the existing footage and additional image material. This was intended to convey the dynamism and freshness of KPMG, but at no point lose the visual language of the original version. Both films, as different as they are, still embody the original initiative "Cutting Through Complexity."

"The KPMG brand should be perceptible and tangible - both internally and externally. Communication should be adapted to the newly defined "Cutting Through Complexity" initiative," says Hubert Achermann, CEO of KPMG Switzerland. In this way, the complexity of the market will be presented in an understandable way for employees and clients on various channels.

Switzerland applies for .swiss internet domain

The Federal Department of the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications (DETEC) has submitted an application for the Internet domain .swiss to the international domain name administrator ICANN Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers.

With the application for .swiss, the Uvek wants to "protect the interests of Switzerland" and prevent third parties from misusing or monopolizing the geographical designation "Switzerland". This was announced by the department on Wednesday. According to the Uvek, the .swiss internet domain can increase Switzerland's international visibility in all areas, including the economy. On the other hand, the value and reputation of Swiss culture, products and services could be strengthened in the long term.

The Uvek hopes that this will increase consumer confidence in brands, for example. With .swiss, the geographical, linguistic and social meaning of the word "Swiss" can also be preserved. The Uvek also expects .swiss to have a higher clarity and recognition value than .ch. While .ch is well understood within Switzerland, there is often confusion abroad, for example with China (.cn). "Swiss", on the other hand, has an unmistakable meaning worldwide.

ICANN is responsible for the international coordination of the Internet addressing system. In June 2011, it decided to introduce new generic first-level Internet domain names. This means that any additional generic names such as .bank, .hotel, .berlin or .gmbh can be added to the existing .com, .org or .info.

ICANN will decide on the allocation of the first new Internet domains in spring 2013 at the earliest. (SDA)

Adello: Mobile Advertising for Renault Twizy

Swiss mobile advertising marketer Adello, together with 20 Minuten and OMD, has implemented an HTML5 "soccer" minigame for Renault Twizy. The campaign now follows in time for the start of the 2012 European Championship.

It is designed to accompany consumers in an entertaining way during the soccer championships. The automotive campaign is implemented 100 percent with mobile advertising. It relies on various elements. Firstly, it takes up the current and highly emotional football theme. Secondly, this theme is implemented as a game, similar to the mobile game "Angry Birds. The 20 Minuten readers intuitively determine the shooting direction with their finger on the touchscreen and score goals. In addition, for the first time an HTML5 game is used for a mobile campaign to offer an experience that goes beyond simple banners. The whole thing is also seamlessly connected to social media and generates leads.

In addition to media booking, Adello and her 10-person team are also responsible for creating the advertising material and programming the game. The Renault Twizy campaign will run from June 8 to July 1 and will be published nationally by 20 Minuten. A current iPad will be raffled among all participants.

Journalism training hardly promotes social responsibility

Volume 13 of the HWZ Series, titled «Journalism Education between Market Dependence and Social Responsibility,» has just been published. In it, HWZ senior lecturer and author Hugo Bigi examines how part-time journalism education affects the quality and democracy-promoting functions of contemporary journalism.

His research shows how a training system close to the media industry improves the employability of young journalists. This was reported by the Zurich University of Applied Sciences HWZ in a press release issued on Wednesday. The research paper also explains how the same training system provides them with a basis for self-interested behavior, but does little to promote a sense of social responsibility.
