Last but not least: smartphone jeans for the lazy

The average smartphone user takes their device out of their pocket perhaps every half hour - checking their emails, updating their Facebook news or reading a text message they've received is simply a must from time to time.

Taking your smartphone out and putting it back in can be a real pain. An American clothing manufacturer has now launched a pair of jeans on the market that should make the lives of smartphone users a whole lot easier: The pants, called Delta 415, are designed in such a way that the device does not even have to be taken out to operate it: When the wearer opens a zipper on the trouser leg, they have direct access to their smartphone through a transparent film.

The system certainly works when seated - it can be helpful for cheating on exams if your latest conquest turns out to be a snorer on your first date in a classy restaurant, or if you're longing for a change of pace during a boring meeting. Standing up might be a little more difficult, as the position you have to assume is akin to an advanced yoga exercise. Not to mention the operation while walking: hopping on one leg is a must - your leg muscles will thank you.

By the way: Anyone interested in the innovative jeans: They can be ordered for 160 dollars here.

Third Antalis Design Lounge

Under the motto "Tischlein kniggg dich", Antalis invited guests to the Design Lounge at the Casinotheater Winterthur on Thursday. This is the third time that Antalis has hosted this event.

Around 80 invited guests from the fields of graphics, advertising and marketing attended the event organized by the European wholesaler of paper and packaging materials. The first item on the evening's program was an etiquette course with Doris Pfyl. Screen printer Lorenz Boegli inspired his audience with practical examples, technical explanations and many anecdotes that made it clear that screen printing is by no means an outdated or boring technique, according to a press release from Antalis.

Syndicom industry conference on the renewal of the CLA

The Syndicom union’s industry conference addressed the upcoming negotiations to renew the collective bargaining agreement (CBA) for the graphic arts industry. The industry conference demands: No further cuts to night, Sunday, and holiday premiums.

Large companies such as Migros or SBB, which outsource printing jobs to cheaper foreign countries, are partly to blame for the loss of valuable jobs in the Swiss graphic arts industry. Syndicom wrote this in a press release on Saturday. It is absurd that the large and financially strong media publishers Tamedia, NZZ and Ringier or Presses Centrales PCL in Renens are also calling into question job security in Swiss print shops by outsourcing the printing of their own products to neighboring countries.

The GIV industry conference firmly rejects the attack by the employers' association Viscom, which is radically calling into question important achievements of the collective labor agreement in the upcoming CLA negotiations, the statement continues. In this context, it is particularly absurd that the large and financially strong media publishers Tamedia, NZZ and Ringier or Presses Centrales SA (PCL) in Renens are also taking part in this "arms race" by outsourcing the printing of their own products to neighboring countries, thus further calling into question job security in Swiss print shops. Correct minimum wages would also be of increasing importance in the graphic arts industry, not least in the peripheral regions and for apprenticeship graduates. Instead of "detailed fixing of minimum wages" in order to strengthen "entrepreneurial room for maneuver," there should no longer be an hourly wage below 22 Swiss francs in the graphic arts industry, said Syndicom. Viscom mocks all night and shift workers by claiming that the "excessive regime of compensation for work at night and on Sundays and holidays" offers "false incentives" and weakens "the competitiveness of the industry." Working at unscheduled hours results in serious restrictions on the social life of employees.

Therefore, the industry conference demands: No further reduction of night, Sunday and holiday surcharges. The GIV industry conference is well aware of the difficult conditions for Swiss print shops, the statement continues. However, instead of stirring up social tensions in the industry and in the companies, as Viscom's provocative attack on the CLA is attempting to do, the delegates from Swiss print shops are ensuring that the situation is calmed down. They called on the Viscom employers' association to stick to the results of the last negotiations: The current CLA will be renewed without any cuts - at the same time, it must be declared valid for the entire industry by becoming generally binding".

Last but not least: Everything "ola, kala, OK" in Greece

A new media initiative aims to lift the spirits of crisis-stricken citizens in Greece: The website «ola, kala, OK» (everything is fine) publishes only positive news.

Various topics are addressed on the website. For example, the site, which sees itself primarily as a portal for health and wellness topics, says: "If you want to change your life, come with us". According to SDA, the "Topic of the week" section on Friday featured an article on the benefits of meditation. Despite the motto of spreading only positive news, the financial crisis is also discussed - but from a positive perspective: "How Germany has benefited from the austerity plans" is one headline. According to SDA, there are sections such as "NGO", "Volunteering, Solidarity", "Sport" and "Economy". But even for a website that only disseminates positive news, one thing is likely to be particularly difficult in a highly indebted country where over 22% of people are unemployed: Convincing users to visit the homepage even after they have visited the "Job market" and "Problem solving" service pages.

Federal Court confirms Weko fine against Publigroupe

The advertising agency Publigroupe must pay a definitive fine of 2.5 million Swiss francs for violating the Antitrust Act. The Federal Supreme Court has dismissed the company’s appeal and upheld the Competition Commission’s decision.

In 2007, the Competition Commission (ComCo) found that Publigroupe held a dominant position in the market for the placement and sale of advertisements and advertising space in Swiss print media and had abused this position. Various small companies had been wrongly refused compensation for brokered advertisements. As a sanction, the Competition Commission imposed a fine of CHF 2.5 million. Following the Federal Administrative Court, the Federal Supreme Court has now also confirmed the decision of the Competition Commission.

At its hearing on Friday, the II. Public Law Division dismissed Publigroupe's appeal by three votes to two. According to the judges in Lausanne, it is clear that Publigroupe's conduct violated Article 7 of the Cartel Act. In the opinion of the majority of the judges, PubliGroupe could and should have known that its conduct was not correct under competition law. However, two of the judges doubted whether the provision of the Cartel Act in question was formulated clearly enough for the company to have been able to measure its conduct against it.

According to the court, the amount of the fine is not objectionable. In setting the fine, the ComCo had taken into account the fact that Publigroupe had corrected its conduct during the proceedings. Publigroupe includes the subsidiaries Publicitas, Publicitas Publimedia, Publicitas Publimag and Publicitas Mosse. (sda)

In a press release issued on Friday, Publigroupe pointed out that - in view of the length of the proceedings - the decision was based on market conditions and Publigroupe's market position that date back almost a decade and are no longer relevant today. The world of media and advertising - especially that of the press, including the position of Publicitas in the press advertising sector - has undergone considerable upheaval in recent times.

The future direction of Publicitas must be geared to the challenges of today and tomorrow, which are changing fundamentally. Publicitas is currently in a transformation phase with the aim of restoring profitability in press marketing and further accelerating online activities.
