APG|SGA presents billposting concept for the city of Lucerne

APG|SGA has presented its new billboard concept for the city of Lucerne. Under this plan, the total billboard space will be reduced to approximately 1,300 m².

The project is scheduled for completion in the first half of 2012. The main criterion for the redesign was "quality before quantity," as APG|SGA writes in a statement on Thursday. In concrete terms, this means that new poster sites will only be built at well-frequented locations and in prime sites. The new substrate meets the requirements of poster sites that integrate well into the cityscape. It meets the highest requirements and is elegant and timelessly classic. Existing second- or third-tier billboards will gradually disappear from the public image.

Posters in harmony with public space
With the billposting concept, a way had been found to reconcile private economic interests with public interests. The city of Lucerne receives financial compensation from APG|SGA for billposting, i.e. the use of public space. The billposting concept recognizes posters as a formative component for the cityscape, which bear witness to a lively economy, APG|SGA continues in its statement. At the same time, however, it also takes into account the criteria of local image design and thus does justice to the various building zones and the specific situations. Against this background, the locations for advertising sites were surveyed and evaluated in numerous inspections throughout the city.

The overall concept was developed in cooperation with the Lucerne administration and APG|SGA. In the approval process, constructional implementation on site could begin in the fall of 2010.

Swiss Media Association: 14.3 billion Swiss francs invested in media in 2011

The media market grew in 2011: Revenue from user and advertising markets totaled 14.3 billion francs, an increase of 0.3 percent compared to 2010. The Swiss Media Association publishes these figures in its studies *Media Budget* and *Media Trends*.

The Swiss Media Association presented its Media Budget study for the eighth time. In it, on the one hand, the expenditure of users on content, access and hardware for media consumption is surveyed and, on the other hand, the results of the Swiss advertising statistics are added up. The study thus presents the total revenues of the Swiss media industry in all its forms.

Last year, a Swiss private household spent 3,150 Swiss francs on media consumption. That is 230 francs more than in the previous year. Private individuals invest around 11.1 billion Swiss francs, 5.2 billion of which for content. Revenues in the advertising market increased by 3.2 percent to 3.1 billion Swiss francs. 75 percent of media executives rely on paid content on digital platforms.

The Swiss population spent virtually the same amount on the printed press as last year: 1.7 billion Swiss francs. Revenues from press subscriptions stagnated at 1.2 billion Swiss francs, while individual sales fell by 8 percent to 527 million Swiss francs. Spending on media-related downloads rose by 11.2 percent to CHF 546 million. Overall, the Swiss again spent CHF 5.2 billion on editorial content in 2011. It can be concluded from this: The Swiss remain loyal to their print brands, even in the digital media world, the association said in a statement Thursday.

The importance of subscriptions remains high, while media content is increasingly being used on mobile devices. Media executives who responded to the association's media trends survey are challenged by the financial crises and structural changes in the communications world, the association added. Many expressed the dilemma of keeping costs under control while investing in innovative offerings. The attitude that readers will be asked to pay for their own services on digital platforms in the future is gaining acceptance in broad circles. The introduction of payment systems is a demanding marketing and IT task, the association says of the study. In parallel, the commercial digital market is being further developed with advertising, service and sales platforms. The trend toward mobile communication platforms defined in the Media Budget study is changing information behavior.

The development of viable and sustainable business models is the challenge for all players in the media market.

The Rising CCO: Study on social media - more benefit than harm in the crisis?

Social media is considered the fastest-growing communication tool for CCOs—no matter where in the world they are. In the annual study *The Rising CCO*, 40 percent of respondents said they were prepared for attacks from social media.

In 2010, this figure was only 33 percent. However, social media is not the source of all evil: just under half (46%) of CCOs whose company had faced a crisis in the past two years stated that social media had not played a role. In only seven percent of cases was the crisis triggered there. Rather, social media enables crisis situations to be resolved (34 percent) instead of exacerbating them (22 percent). These are the results of the annual study The Rising CCO. It was conducted for the fourth time this year by Spencer Stuart and Weber Shandwick.

"The Rising CCO IV suggests that the importance of social media will continue to grow and have a huge impact on corporate communications budgets in the future," says Dr. Leslie Gaines-Ross, Chief Reputation Strategist at Weber Shandwick. "It's encouraging to see that CCOs around the world are embracing these channels as an opportunity to mitigate a crisis and mitigate the threat of reputational damage."

Corporate social responsibility offers increasing support for reputation
Almost eight out of ten CCOs (76 percent) believe that corporate social responsibility (CSR) is crucial for the stability of reputation and around half (52 percent) of those surveyed state that the need for CSR communication experts is growing. Companies that have faced a crisis in the past two years attribute greater importance to CSR expertise in day-to-day business than companies that have so far remained crisis-free (82 versus 63 percent).

Regional characteristics of the global study
The priorities of senior management for communications officers vary greatly from region to region: While in North America CCOs are expected to have social media under control, in Europe the company's reputation and in APAC a solid media response are at the top of the agenda. Globally, the effectiveness of communication is primarily measured by media coverage and employee engagement. But there are also differences: In Europe, public attention and attitudes towards the company play an important role. In North America, on the other hand, great importance is attached to the opinion of the company's own CEO, while the APAC countries place greater emphasis on awards and accolades.

The Rising CCO
The Rising CCO study, now in its fourth year, examines the positions, responsibilities and opinions of CCOs in the world's largest companies. The 142 participants come from companies in the USA, Europe, Asia and Latin America. The majority of respondents work in companies listed in the Fortune Global 500. The study was conducted online between January and March 2012.
