Media Minister Doris Leuthard regrets that the two parties were unable to find a solution, as Dominique Bugnon, spokesperson for the Federal Department of the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications (DETEC), said on Monday. The negotiations between the publishers and SRG lasted over a year. Nevertheless, it cannot be said that there is no solution, said Urs F. Meyer, Managing Director of the Swiss Media Association, when asked by the SDA news agency. There are two solutions, "the SRG's and ours". However, these two approaches are so far apart that Federal Councillor Leuthard decided not to extend the negotiation period again.
The dispute between publishers and the SRG began two years ago when the Federal Council allowed the SRG to sell advertising space on the internet. The publishers, who did not want any competition in the highly competitive online market, were furious about this decision.
She sees no reason why publishers should help SRG to regain its financial balance by accepting new competition on the Internet, said Valérie Boagno, President of the French-speaking Swiss Publishers' Association Media Suisse. SRG did see a reason: it argued that it had to fulfill its public service mandate.
In September 2011, Leuthard called on the two camps to come to an agreement. Since then, publishers and SRG have been working in working groups to find solutions for content and advertising in the online business. (SDA)
