Facebook and Yahoo bury hatchet

Facebook and Yahoo have reached a settlement: Instead of fighting in court over the use of patents, the two internet giants will work together more closely than ever in the future.

The newly formed alliance extends to vital advertising and content distribution. The patents - the bone of contention - may be used by each other. "I'm pleased that we've resolved this in a positive way, said Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook's manager in charge of day-to-day operations, on Friday. Users will benefit through great products, she promised. Yahoo interim chief Ross Levinsohn said, "We're excited about the closer partnership with Facebook."

A settlement saves both sides lengthy and expensive wrangling in court. The partnership in the advertising business also increases their clout. Yahoo is suffering from the market power of rival Google, and Facebook has to prove after its IPO that the social network can earn decent money. Together, they are a power on the Internet: Facebook has more than 900 million users, Yahoo around 700 million.

Yahoo had initiated the dispute at the end of February, shortly before Facebook's IPO. In a lawsuit, the Internet pioneer accused its younger rival of ripping off ideas.

Facebook responded with a counterclaim. To strengthen its own position, the social network bought up patents that had originally belonged to AOL for 550 million dollars. (SDA/DPA)

Ringier: Bern Bellevue suite terminated

According to research by the Sonntagszeitung, the Swiss publishing house Ringier has terminated its long-standing lease with the Hotel Bellevue Palace, effective at the end of the year.

As the Sonntagszeitung writes in its current issue, Ringier is parting ways with its Bernese Nobel dépendance after thirty years for financial reasons. The amount of the savings is not disclosed, but it is assumed to be in the six-digit range annually. The suite represents the rise of the Ringier papers and their political journalist Frank A. Meyer in Federal Berne, the newspaper says.

Since 2010, the premises have been used by Ringier publicist Hannes Britschgi. The termination was personally instigated by Group CEO Marc Walder and is a consequence of the pressure to cut costs at Dufourstrasse. The Sonntagszeitung interprets the decision as a turning point in the recent history of the Swiss media: "In the communications sector, the time for clunkers is over; there is no longer much emphasis on representation. Saving and efficiency are the new currency of media managers."

NZZ am Sonntag criticizes article on Infosperber.ch

According to an article on Infosperber.ch, the NZZ am Sonntag reportedly accepts payment not only for advertisements but also for editorial recommendations published in its lifestyle supplement «Stil.» This has prompted a sharp response from NZZ am Sonntag Editor-in-Chief Felix E. Müller.

According to the Sonntag newspaper, retired media manager Christian Müller calculates on the online platform Infosperber that the newly designed magazine supplement "Style" of the NZZ am Sonntag must be a loss-making business. He counted the advertisements in June and compared the income with the estimated expenditure. Müller's conclusion: "Stil" is a "bottomless pit". The loss per issue amounted to 13,000 francs. It is assumed on Infosperber.ch that money is collected not only for the advertisements, but also for the editorial recommendations with sales outlet addresses.

With such an insinuation, for which the author fails to provide any evidence, his "personal professional honor is massively violated", Sonntagszeitung editor-in-chief Felix E. Müller is quoted as saying in Sonntag. The NZZ am Sonntag's lawyer is now demanding the removal of this "allegation" from the Internet as well as a written declaration to cease and desist because it "seriously" damages the reputation of the newspaper and the NZZ as publisher. It also violates the law on unfair competition. However, Christian Müller from Infosperber does not want to cower and accept a legal dispute.

Küttel Laubacher designs pavilion for Volvo

At the 19th Trucker and Country Festival in Interlaken, Volvo Trucks Switzerland was also one of many exhibitors. Küttel Laubacher designed a pavilion made of pallets for it.

3,200 Europe pallets, 14,000 bolts, 300 hours of manpower - that's the Volvo Trucks pavilion. The pavilion is a good seven meters high and 27 meters wide. The idea came from the advertisers of Küttel Laubacher. Throughout the year, the truckers transport pallet around the globe. "So it was obvious that we used pallet for the pavilion as a reference to the trucker scene," says Daniel Küttel, co-founder of the agency.
