Last but not least: Polo's second attempt

Polo National is once again living up to his name: A month before the national holiday, he wrote his very own State of the Nation address—and pasted it onto the first of a total of 140 pieces of Emmental cheese.

Yes, that's the way it is, whether we like it or not: a total of 140 Emmentaler cheeses will be covered with Polo Hofer's speech; the speech will then melt into these cheeses during the maturing process. The aim is to create a "particularly unique and Swiss cheese", which will be available in Swiss retailers from July 21 as 1st August Emmentaler. Än Guete!

In his speech, the musician put his personal thoughts on Switzerland and its inhabitants on paper - and came up with some more or less original ideas: For example, the term "Swissness" is said to have its origins in "sweaty", as we Swiss have always been a hard-working people. Switzerland is also the only island with land around it. And although the land around it is mainland, they're really swimming there. Maybe they've had a joint or two too many?

Incidentally, Polo has already been allowed to give a 1st August speech in the city of Bern. In that speech, however, he was not understood by everyone, he says. So he is all the more pleased to be able to make his second attempt together with Emmentaler. Will he be better understood this time? Probably not, but it's certainly worth a try.

Study: Over seven hours of media use per day

Mediapulse’s Time Use Study tracks media usage throughout Switzerland over the course of a day and shows that the average time spent using media is already around seven and a half hours per day. However, media consumption varies significantly depending on the target group.

At 461 minutes, the German-speaking Swiss have the longest average media use per day, around 10 minutes more than in Suisse romande and 20 minutes more than in Svizzera italiana, Mediapulse said in a statement. This means that we now spend as much time using media as we do sleeping.

These are the results of the Time Use Study conducted by Mediapulse in its latest survey in 2011/2012. In its fourth survey since 2006, the Time Use Study is the only study in Switzerland to link daily activities directly with media use. It is now also possible to distinguish whether media consumption takes place alone or together with other people. The study thus provides an insight into the everyday media life of all Swiss people and shows where specific target groups can be addressed with which media. The Time Use Study thus enables media professionals and the advertising industry to create an accurate picture of media consumption and the daily routine of specific target groups.

If we compare two different target groups, such as business commuters (full-time work outside the home, medium to well educated) and householders (not employed, no commuting), clear differences in media use become apparent. Whereas business commuters can mainly be reached via radio and Internet during work and only watch more television in the evening, householders switch from radio to television as early as the afternoon. Householders spend significantly more time reading newspapers in the morning and accordingly spend twice as much time doing so, while business commuters spend twice as much time on the Internet Another interesting difference: In Suisse romande and Svizzera italiana, television is much more firmly anchored and gains in importance as early as midday.

Overall, television clearly remains the strong medium in the evening, while radio dominates during the day. For large parts of the day, radio is the medium with which the Swiss spend the most time. Radio and TV thus remain the undisputed most important media in everyday life in Switzerland: The Swiss spend between 63 and 70 percent of total media usage time with these two media in all parts of the country.

The Time Use Study is based on a representative survey in all three parts of the country. A total of 3,200 interviews will be conducted. The study is available including online access at Publica Data available.

Criminal proceedings against Weltwoche discontinued

The criminal proceedings against Weltwoche for a controversial cover picture on the subject of Roma have been dropped. Corinne Bouvard, spokeswoman for the Zurich public prosecutor's office, told the Zurich/Schaffhausen regional journal on Monday.

At the beginning of April, the weekly newspaper showed a small Roma boy on the cover, pointing a pistol at the viewer. The picture with the caption "The Roma are coming: Robberies through Switzerland" illustrated a report on Roma crime.

"The cover picture together with the content of the article does not disparage the Roma as a people," said Bouvard on Monday evening on Radio DRS, explaining why the case was dropped. The article merely addresses the abuse of children by Roma clans, said the spokeswoman for the public prosecutor's office.

The picture had originally been taken in a completely different context, as it later turned out. The pistol was a toy weapon. After the cover picture was published, it was met with criticism. It was said to be racist and in breach of the criminal law on racism.

Several complaints were filed. The Zurich public prosecutor's office then launched a criminal investigation to clarify whether Weltwoche's cover image violated the anti-racism penal code. (SDA)

Euro RSCG Zurich: Radio spots developed for Peugeot

The agency Euro RSCG Zurich has designed a radio campaign for Peugeot, which can be heard on Swiss stations during the vacation season in German, French and Italian.

Vacation time is car travel time, the agency said in a statement. Going on vacation without a car check often ends up in a garage abroad. If language problems and untrustworthy car mechanics are added to the mix, it can be expensive. Based on this insight, Euro RSCG Zurich has designed a radio campaign for its client Peugeot Suisse, in which foreign garages speak out and tell the listener what they really mean. That's why it's better to go to a Peugeot summer check beforehand, so that it doesn't get expensive afterwards.
