The Swiss advertising market thus remained at the previous year's level (+0.2 percent, +662'623 Swiss francs). In the full-year perspective, the development remains stable with a slight plus of 1.3 percent (CHF 33.1 million), as Media Focus writes in a statement.
A rough wind is blowing in the apparel industry, with a sharp drop in advertising dollars. In July 2012, a drop of a whopping 38.8 percent (-1.4 million Swiss francs) was measured. From January to July 2012, the values - with the exception of February - were always below the previous year. Cumulatively, this results in a minus of 11.1% (-8.0 million Swiss francs). The number of advertisers reduced drastically in recent years. Whereas in 2008 more than 1'400 companies placed advertisements from January to July, in 2012 there were still just under 800 advertisers. Although the "lingerie" (+149.6 percent, +2.4 million Swiss francs) and "clothing accessories" (+364.2 percent, + 1.5 million Swiss francs) sectors saw strong advertising communication from January to July 2012, the development of "outerwear" (-19.1 percent, -5.5 million Swiss francs) and "image, Internet and product range advertising" (-20.8 percent, -5.0 million Swiss francs) overshadowed the sector results.
Dry spell beer?
Although the summer month of July would be virtually predestined for beverage advertising, the industry nevertheless recorded a "high-percentage" decline in July 2012. Advertising print fell by just under 20 percent (-2.5 million Swiss francs) compared to the same month last year. The driving force behind this development was the "Beer" sector. Compared to the previous year, advertising dollars were reduced by 49 percent (-2.3 million Swiss francs) in July 2012. The decline is primarily attributable to Feldschlösschen and Heineken, which intensively advertised a total of three products last year. In July of this year, they were almost in an advertising drought.
Special press - special good
The specialty press is becoming increasingly popular for placing advertisements. In July 2012, it accounted for 13.4 percent of the media mix, and 12.4 percent in the current year. Since 2006, advertising pressure in this media group has been on the rise.
