Werbewoche survey on media policy

In the last issue of Werbewoche, we formulated six theses on the subject of media policy. These were assessed differently in some cases in the ongoing online survey. We are therefore still interested in input from exponents of the advertising and media industry.

Use our Online survey to evaluate and comment on these theses:

1. what the market is obviously capable of delivering no longer needs to be financed with public funds.

2. if private companies are unable to produce content that is in the interest of the country, the federal government may support their production in whole or in part, regardless of the media genre, for which performance contracts are tendered and awarded.

3. a new media policy should be financed via the federal budget. If necessary, the value-added tax can be increased for this purpose.

4 The current draft for a new RTVA is not compatible with a future-oriented media policy and must therefore be rejected.

5 Instead of a patches policy, there needs to be a comprehensive debate for a new media policy with a referendum on a new media article.

6. it is in the vital interest of the media industry to promote and actively shape a new media policy.

Gemi July 2012: Advertising pressure stable

In July, advertising volume remained stable in both electronic media and the overall market. Only Adscreen saw growth during the summer month.

With an increase of 18 points, Adscreen clearly stood out from the other electronic media in July, reaching 559 (541) index points. The advertising pressure from TV hardly changed at all, with 602 (601) index points. The situation is similar, but with a different sign, for the Internet and teletext. Both lost 2 points and remain at 650 (652) and 93 (95) index points, respectively. Radio lost 5 points and suffered the biggest loss, at 421 (426) index points.

As in the previous month, there was no change in advertising pressure in the electronic media, with a total of 605 index points, and in the market as a whole, with 238 index points.

Last but not least: Social Brainwork

The higher the number of Facebook friends, the bigger the brain. What was already clear to many people has now been confirmed by science.

In contrast to investors, data protectionists and advertisers, scientists seem to be delighted with Facebook. Recently British researchers using the social network to show that the size of the virtual circle of friends correlates positively with the size of the brain. The scientists based their findings on the assumption that people with large brains are better able to interpret the feelings, beliefs, attitudes and wishes of those around them. Consequently, they should be able to manage a larger social network.

So what we always suspected is proving to be true: Those people who define themselves mainly by their high number of Facebook friends, who annoy even the most casual acquaintance with friend requests and who have a mixture of pity and contempt for users with a manageable number of contacts... are very intelligent.

NZZ: Joy over 10,000 digital subscribers

At the end of July 2012, the Neue Zürcher Zeitung and the NZZ am Sonntag surpassed the 10,000-mark for digital subscriptions. This puts them among the leaders in the German-speaking world.

The development of the e-paper, especially since the introduction of the iPad app in October 2010 and the webpaper launched at the end of May, continues to be very pleasing, according to a statement. At the end of July, Neue Zürcher Zeitung and NZZ am Sonntag registered more than 10,000 digital-only subscriptions for the first time.

With this number of digital subscriptions, NZZ is the leader in Switzerland in absolute terms, the statement continues. In German-speaking countries, too, it is on a par with the most successful comparable offerings of media companies, despite the smaller market.

"These figures contradict the widespread opinion that there is no willingness to pay for purely digital content," explains Peter Hogenkamp, Head of Digital Media at NZZ Media Group. "NZZ is therefore correspondingly confident about the further expansion stages, especially the introduction of the paywall in the fall, when access for e-paper, webpaper and full access to NZZ.ch will be combined into one subscription."

Tele M1 and Tele Bärn expand their programs

Tele M1 and Tele Bärn are redesigning their programming as of August 27, 2012. This is made possible by the cooperation between the partner stations Tele Züri, Tele M1 and Tele Bärn, which have formed the TV station family of AZ Medien since the beginning of this year.

"TalkTäglich" will be taken over from Tele M1 and Tele Bärn and enriched with regionally relevant topics and guests, according to a statement. Daily topics will be discussed from 6:30 p.m. Monday through Wednesday (on Tele M1 on Tuesdays and Wednesdays until the end of 2012). Shows on national topics will be broadcast simultaneously on all three stations in the family, while regional "TalkTäglich" shows will be produced autonomously in Aarau or Bern. The new "TalkTäglich" shows on Tele M1 will be hosted primarily by Werner De Schepper and Markus Gilli, and on Tele Bärn by Matthias Mast and Markus Gilli.

"Focus" - the daily talk on site

The daily regional reporting on Tele M1 and Tele Bärn is being intensified: From August 27, 2012, the program "Fokus" will highlight an important regional topic of the day from Monday to Friday after the news. With a different backdrop every day, the topic will be explained, analyzed and assessed in a 5-minute short interview at the scene of the event. The program "Fokus" on Tele M1 is presented by the reporter team Anne-Käthi Kremer, Jonas Keller and Adrian Remund. Michelle Bernhard is the presenter on Tele Bärn.

Expansion of business reporting

With the program relaunch, the business show "Geld-Tipp" on Tele M1 is getting a new look and a new broadcasting slot. The show, presented by Martin Spieler, will now be broadcast at the end of the stock market week on Fridays at 7:20 p.m. and repeated on Saturdays and Sundays at 5:50 p.m. The business coverage on Tele Bärn is also being expanded: In addition to the daily stock market flash after the news, the program "Geld" (Money) will now be broadcast on Fridays at 7.20 pm. In the 10-minute economic program, the relevant events of the past stock market week are analyzed and classified. Presented by Claudine Fleury, the program will be repeated on Saturdays and Sundays at 5:50 p.m.

Cinema broadcast on Thursday on Tele Bärn

Philipp Portmann presents the most important cinema novelties every Thursday at 6:50 pm. Short interviews with well-known stars and a viewer competition are intended to round off the program.
