ADC Festival 2013: Hamburg venue

At its meeting on August 20, 2012, the Executive Board of the Art Directors Club for Germany (ADC) selected Hamburg as the host city for the ADC Festival in 2013 and subsequent years.

The decision was a close one, as both ADC sections from Hamburg and Frankfurt had presented extremely innovative concepts for the further development of the festival, according to a statement on Tuesday. In the end, the decision was made in favor of Hamburg, as the change of location brings with it new partnerships and potential, the statement continued. Negotiations with the city of Hamburg, potential partners and service providers will begin this week and should be completed by mid-September.

During the meeting, the board once again thanked all the partners involved in Frankfurt am Main for the exceptionally good cooperation over the past three years, which had ensured that the festival was raised to a new level that Hamburg can now build on. With the involvement of the ADC sections in Hamburg, Berlin, Munich, Frankfurt, Düsseldorf and Stuttgart, the ADC creative club had re-discussed the location of the ADC Festival nationwide. The largest industry gathering of creatives from the German-speaking world has been successfully held in Frankfurt am Main for the past three years. Hamburg and the Main metropolis were finally shortlisted as the location for the next three years.

Goldbach Group with problems in online business

The Goldbach Group is struggling with challenges in the rapidly changing online business. Thanks solely to another increase in revenue from its radio and television operations, its first-half revenue fell by only 0.4 percent to 208.9 million Swiss francs.

At the bottom line, the Küsnacht ZH-based advertising marketer reported a profit of CHF 3.4 million. In the same period last year, the figure was CHF 3.1 million. At that time, however, the sale of a print business in Romania had depressed the result by around CHF 0.7 million.

In the Interactive division, which comprises the interactive and mobile marketing business, operating profit (EBIT) fell from CHF 1.4 million to just under CHF 0.2 million.

Despite a 27.8 percent drop in sales, the online advertising division was able to increase its EBIT from CHF 1.6 million to CHF 2.6 million. Cost savings of 20 percent and a one-off effect from the discontinuation of a license for online marketing software contributed to this, as Goldbach explained in the half-year report. The online division has dispensed with low-margin volume business. However, substitution in the declining display market was difficult. In addition, a number of mandates were lost, particularly in Poland, including the self-marketing of the social network Facebook.

Goldbach has reviewed its online strategy and decided to accelerate the expansion of video marketing, according to the statement. In view of the difficult market conditions in the online business, the Group lowered its forecast for the year as a whole.

Goldbach now expects sales to stagnate and profits to be higher. Previously, the management around CEO Klaus Kappeler expected a single-digit percentage increase in sales and a significantly higher profit. (SDA)

Regional TV: Close to the audience, uncritical and PR-heavy

According to a Publicom expert survey, the 13 licensed regional television stations have too little to live on and too much to die for. The current regional television model does not allow for satisfactory performance. There is a desire for strong competition with the SRG.

A study published in May Publicom study concluded that, with few exceptions, regional television in Switzerland is not viable without public funding. The majority of DELPHInarium experts are therefore skeptical about the current model. Only a few can warm to an increase in license fees; they would hope for more impetus from a "genuine, private competitor to the SRG. The journalistic performance of the small, resource-poor stations is judged ambivalently: It is true that they offer audience-oriented, independent content and appealing information. But the programs are also PR-heavy, offer little entertainment and are neither critical nor innovative.

Nevertheless, the experts surveyed believe that regional television still has potential in the advertising market. By 2017, their share of the TV advertising market is expected to increase from seven to nine percent.

Contexta builds longest bench in the world

The world's longest bench is located on the Kronberg in Appenzellerland. The idea for the world record came from the Contexta agency, and it was achieved thanks to Facebook fans of Appenzeller cheese.

In the TV commercials for Appenzeller cheese, Uwe Ochsenknecht sits with two dairymen on a small bench and tries to uncover the secret of the herbal soups. The world record for Appenzeller cheese, set with the help of Facebook fans, also features a small bench. However, it is significantly longer than the one in the TV commercials: It measures one kilometer - and is thus officially the longest bench in the world, according to a press release.

A seat for each participant

The campaign was conceived and implemented by the Contexta agency. The idea: Every Facebook fan of Appenzeller cheese was allowed to reserve a personal seat, which was then built on the Kronberg in Appenzellerland. As the number of participants increased, the bench grew continuously. Within a few days - with the help of Facebook posts alone and without any advertising - it succeeded in inspiring enough fans for the world record attempt.

The rush was soon so great that the record was broken and the remaining seats had to be raffled off, the agency continues in the statement. The result: almost 5,000 participants and a 150 percent increase in fans of Appenzeller cheese to over 10,000. In total, the campaign reached 500,000 people thanks to the many comments and posts from participants.

Officially surveyed and inaugurated

On August 18, 2012, the longest bench in the world was inaugurated with a big celebration. More than 1500 guests did not miss this occasion and were present when a notary measured the bench, officially confirmed the world record and thus laid the foundation for the entry in the Guinness Book of Records.

Responsible at Appenzeller cheese: David Vincze (Director), Monika Storchenegger (Head of Marketing and Communications), Christian Gatsas (Online Project Manager). Responsible at Contexta: Nadine Borter (overall responsibility), Moritz Staehelin (creative direction), Claudio Parente (art direction), Annette Häcki (text/concept), Vale Florea (screen design), Merlin Wälti (programming), Cyrill Kilchenmann, Cornelia Noti, Sandra Imstepf (consulting).
