Smarket pays journalists for their presence

Smarket, a Zurich-based tourism marketing company, paid journalists several hundred francs to attend a PR event. The journalists were introduced to clients.

According to Sonntag, Smarket paid the journalists for their presence. Journalists from the Sonntagszeitung and NZZ, among others, accepted the 500 francs, as Handelszeitung.ch writes on Sunday. Smarket is said to have brought ten top journalists together with clients at the PR event the week before last in Zurich's Zunfthaus zur Schmiden.

Most of the journalists are said to have been paid a "lump sum" of CHF 500 for their attendance. The companies from the tourism industry present are said to have paid as much as CHF 3,000 for direct contact with the journalists. According to Handelszeitung.ch, Fiorenzo Fässler from Smarketei said that this was not a press conference, but an exchange of information, "even further training". It did not violate any laws or guidelines.

The editor-in-chief of the Bund, and responsible for the joint travel section with the Tagesanzeiger, Artur K. Vogel, however, objected to the compensation offered by Fässler. He also rejected compensation for the train ticket. "I am paid for my work," he wrote according to Sonntag. Accepting such a monetary payment would violate his journalistic principles, "and would also undermine our credibility".

The 500 francs for the journalists were in the press documents, as Sonntag continues. "I have never heard of such practices," says former Tagi editor-in-chief Peter Hartmeier. Fässler, however, has a different opinion. He compensates the journalists with a lump sum, as it is absolutely crucial for his customers that the promised top journalists are actually present.

Last but not least: Measles limitation campaign meets with resistance

The Federal Office of Public Health aims to eradicate measles by 2015. To that end, a large-scale prevention campaign is among the measures planned. However, some cantons are now thwarting the funding plans.

The Federal Office of Public Health FOPH wants to eliminate the virus with a large-scale campaign. The aim is for schools and nurseries throughout Switzerland to check vaccination certificates and send unvaccinated children home for up to 21 days as soon as a child falls ill. This is according to the NZZ am Sonntag. Parents should also be able to have their children vaccinated free of charge and not have to pay a co-payment.

A prevention campaign has already been planned for this action (Werbewoche.ch reported). Last week, the Federal Office of Public Health awarded a contract worth 3 million Swiss francs to a Zurich advertising agency.

According to NZZ am Sonntag, the cantons are now to contribute a further CHF 3 million. They should either transfer the money directly to the federal government or use it to launch their own campaign against measles. The plans have already been approved by the Board of Directors of Public Health.

However, this demand has not gone down well with some cantons. As Geneva has been making efforts to eliminate measles for years, it is now demanding to pay less extra. It is also the responsibility of the federal government to conduct national prevention campaigns. According to NZZ am Sonntag, the cantons in German-speaking Switzerland are also not prepared to contribute more. The canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden is fundamentally questioning the federal campaign. Martin Würmli, Departmental Secretary at the Department of Health and Social Affairs, says: "We doubt that the cost/benefit ratio is reasonable". For cultural reasons, the people of Innerrhoden are less likely to be vaccinated and go to the doctor less often, says Würmli. "Even if the federal government is determined to achieve the goals of the World Health Organization, there is little chance that the campaign will bring about a lasting change in vaccination behaviour here." Although the canton of Schwyz supports the federal government's goals, it does not entirely agree with the campaign. According to the NZZ am Sonntag, Svend Capol, cantonal doctor in Schwyz, says: "Local color must be taken into account in the implementation. In Schwyz, we want to convey the information cautiously, if possible, as we did last year with a regional celebrity - too much authority arouses reluctance."

Comparis.ch and L'Hebdo still in clinch

The online comparison service Comparis.ch is withdrawing its request for a super-provisional injunction against the publication of the piracy allegation by the French-Swiss weekly magazine L'Hebdo. Since the article in question was already published on Thursday, the request is moot in any case.

For comparis.ch, however, the matter is not yet off the table: This withdrawal does not mean that Comparis.ch confirms the accusations made against the company in the article, the company states in a communiqué on Friday. In the meantime, it has turned out that the hacker attack on a website of the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) on September 28, 2011, was a private individual action of a comparis.ch employee at his workplace. Comparis.ch now wants to wait for the reaction of L'Hebdo and Ringier respectively and then check the further procedure, as company spokesman Felix Schneuwly said on request.

L'Hebdo accuses the company of trying to hack a website of the Federal Office of Public Health FOPH for its health insurance premium comparisons. The article appeared Thursday despite a super provisional injunction Comparis.ch had enforced ahead of publication. L'Hebdo argued that it was too late for a retraction.

After comparis.ch at first vigorously defended itself against the accusations, the company had to backtrack on Thursday evening. An employee had admitted to have "checked" the security measures of the FOPH website on September 28, 2011. Comparis.ch terminated the employee and released him with immediate effect. The person in question had "acted on his own authority and at no time on a business mandate". His actions constitute a violation of internal guidelines.

Not involved in premium query

Apart from that, the employee in question had "in no way been involved in the query of the health insurance premiums". Comparis.ch had in no way attempted to obtain the health insurance premiums by unauthorized means. Comparis.ch had used the publicly available data of the FOPH with a common and, according to the Federal Supreme Court, legal method, the so-called crawling. This technique is used in every search engine. The FOPH also did not accuse Comparis.ch of any criminal activity. (sda)

Euro RSCG Zurich: Branded Content for Riposa

Euro RSCG has launched a new project for Riposa. The project is intended to break with the standard advertising practices in this product category.

In collaboration with Eggli.Eggli and the author and radio host Reeto von Gunten, an audio book was created. This is to be used as a universal customer loyalty tool with a high value appeal, according to the agency. The sociographic characteristics of audiobook users would match Riposa's target group quite closely.

"Horizons - Bedtime Stories for Adults" is the title of the audio production and alludes to the mind-expanding experiences of the protagonists. The material reflects the motives of audio book consumers, for whom escapism and relaxation play an important role. The stories were presented at a late-night reading with the author. In addition, mailings, samplings and online activities are planned around the content.

Responsible at Riposa: Walter Schnellmann (Executive Board), Iva Schnellmann (Marketing Management). Responsible at Euro RSCG Zurich: Frank Bodin (overall responsibility), Axel Eckstein (creative direction), Wolfgang Bark (text/concept), Andrea Huber (art direction), Laurie Morard (graphics) Walter Tagliaferri, Janina Iseli (consulting). Responsible at Eggli.Eggli: Rea Eggli (project management and event organization). Author: Reeto von Gunten. Music: Low Motion Disco.

UBI rejects complaints against SRG contributions to election polls

Swiss television did not violate the principle of objectivity with its SRG Election Barometer ahead of the 2011 federal elections. The Independent Complaints Authority for Radio and Television (Ubi) has rejected complaints regarding reports on the elections.

A statistics professor had lodged a complaint against 19 reports on "Tagesschau", "10 vor 10", the radio program "Echo der Zeit" and in special programs. He criticized that the polls on the electoral chances of the parties presented were not representative, as the reports suggested. The Ubi unanimously rejected 17 complaints; it did not act on the remaining two. Critically questioning the work of the GFS.Bern institute commissioned by the SRG is not a media law issue and is not the task of the Ubi, explained Ubi secretariat manager Pierre Rieder on Friday in St. Gallen.

"Representative" is misleading

Ubi only expressed concerns about the use of the term "representative survey". This is misleading for the public because the surveys are not necessarily statistically representative. According to Rieder, the UBI had established guidelines for the presentation of opinion poll results before elections and votes in previous decisions. For example, the client, commissioned institute, number of respondents, time of the survey and error rate must be made transparent.

Animal testing hidden

The posts currently being objected to met these criteria. The Ubi ruled on two further cases at its public meeting in Appenzell: The complaint by an animal rights activist against a program on the health magazine Puls about the neurotoxin Botox was deemed well-founded by the Ubi.

Puls had reported on the use of Botox as a wrinkle smoother and medication, but had omitted the aspect of animal testing associated with the production of the substance. Ubi rejected a further complaint against a report by "10 vor 10" about FC Sion and football scandals. (sda)

SFLB: The Volvo that adapts to you

The advertisers at Spillmann/Felser/Leo Burnett have developed a new campaign for Volvo. The focus is on the statement that the new Volvo V40 can be personalized down to the smallest detail.

The agency dramatizes this fact with a simple trick: In the newly developed campaign, all advertising materials for the Volvo V40 are personalized with different surnames. From posters and all online measures to showroom presentations and films that you can create yourself at Volvo-v40.ch. The special feature: These are real names, because in the run-up to the new campaign, people were able to register their names via Volvo's Facebook page and the Volvo V40 microsite. From thousands of surnames, the names that can now be seen throughout Switzerland were finally drawn by lot.

Top diplomat becomes columnist for Sunday newspaper

Jakob Kellenberger, the long-time president of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and a leading Swiss diplomat, is launching his own column: Starting September 2, 2012, he will be writing exclusively for the international section of the *Sonntagszeitung*.

Kellenberger writes weekly personal viewpoints on international, European and humanitarian issues. "Jakob Kellenberger knows the world's most important trouble spots and many heads of state from his own experience and is better placed than almost anyone else to make independent assessments of political developments in the countries that are currently in the spotlight," says Martin Spieler, Editor-in-Chief of the Sonntagszeitung. The new column by Jakob Kellenberger is intended to give readers access to well-founded analyses. For the same reason, the Sonntagszeitung has had an exclusive partnership with the British news magazine The Economist (the advertising week reported).

Jakob Kellenberger was ICRC President from 2000 to 2012 and previously held management positions in the Swiss diplomatic service for many years. From 1984 to 1992, he was head of the Integration Office of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs FDFA and the Department of Economic Affairs. From 1992 he was State Secretary and Head of the Political Directorate of the FDFA, and from 1989 to 1991 he was Switzerland's chief negotiator at civil servant level in the transit negotiations with the EC. Between 1994 and 1998, he was Switzerland's coordinator and chief negotiator in the bilateral negotiations with the European Union.

Advico Y&R: The Dalai Lama turns out to be a trendsetter

Advico Y&R advertised the lifestyle supplement encore! for the Sonntagszeitung. This will be included in the Sonntagszeitung nine times a year from September.

The Advico Y&R campaign aims to draw attention to this: Three personalities from politics and world affairs, who obviously have no soft spot for fashion and trends, present themselves with hip accessories and hairstyles, according to the agency. The campaign's motto should become clear at a glance: "There is now more lifestyle in the Sunday newspaper".

The subjects featuring the Dalai Lama, Kim Jong-un and Vladimir Putin fit into the existing Babushka concept and can now be discovered in various newspapers and magazines. Encore! will also continue to be distributed by Le Matin dimanche. Thanks to the cooperation with the Sunday newspaper, the lifestyle magazine is now published bilingually.

Metzgerlehner wins Paracelsus Hospital as a customer

Metzgerlehner won the Paracelsus Hospital as a client in a pitch. The agency has now launched a campaign promoting integrative medicine and fighting cancer.

With the opening up of the hospital market and the resulting free choice of hospital for patients, the new Hospital Act has introduced intercantonal competition between the individual hospitals. According to the agency, it is now vital for a hospital to differentiate itself from other hospitals - both in terms of its services and its communication. As a small acute hospital, Paracelsus Hospital Richterswil recognized these new competitive conditions early on and commissioned three agencies in a pitch to develop a new positioning and communication strategy for its conventional and complementary medical services.

Metzgerlehner came up with a convincing solution that focused on the special features of the hospital and in particular the integrative treatment of cancer. And because the Internet is the most important source of information for patients and their relatives after a cancer diagnosis, the focus of the measures was placed on this medium.

Responsible at Paracelsus Hospital Richterswil: Christoph Messmer (Managing Director of the Paracelsus Hospital Association), Sonja Krenger (Assistant Medical Director), Micheline Locher (Assistant Hospital Director), Othmar Weber (Communications). Responsible at Metzgerlehner Worldwide Partners: Michael Rottmann (Creative Direction), Patrick Meyer (Text/Concept), Janine Aebischer (Art Direction), Annette Vetsch (Graphics), Silvan Metzger and Anna-Lea Michael (Consulting), Mark Berger (Head Online & Social Media), Incuray (Coding), adwebster (Behavioral Targeting).
