Newspapers continue to die in Germany

More bad news from the newspaper world. Following the Financial Times Deutschland and the Frankfurter Rundschau, it is now the turn of the staff at the Westfälische Rundschau—a newspaper owned by the WAZ Group.

The Waz media group is closing the editorial office of the loss-making Westfälische Rundschau with 120 jobs, but wants to preserve the title through cooperation with competitors. This was announced by the Waz Group on Tuesday. "We will do everything we can to make these job cuts as socially responsible as possible," explained Waz Managing Director Christian Nienhaus in a statement. Those affected were informed at a staff meeting. A redundancy plan provides for severance payments based on age and length of service.

Loss of millions

With a paid circulation of 115,000, the Westfälische Rundschau (WR) is one of the four titles of the Waz Group in the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia and, according to the publisher, has made a loss of 50 million euros in recent years. The other three Waz titles in North Rhine-Westphalia, the Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung Waz, the Neue Ruhr/Neue Rhein Zeitung NRZ and the Westfalenpost, on the other hand, are in the black. All four newspapers together sell 700,000 copies a day.

Cooperation with competitors

From February, local content will come from the Waz-owned Westfalenpost and the Ruhr Nachrichten from the Dortmund media house Lensing, the Hellweger Anzeiger in Unna and the Märkischer Zeitungsverlag in Lüdenscheid, which belongs to the Ippen publishing group.

A year ago, Petra Grotkamp, a daughter of co-founder Jakob Funke, acquired a majority stake in the Waz Group, which is also active in Thuringia and Lower Saxony as well as in Austria and Eastern Europe. The publishing house is managed by three managing directors - Christian Nienhaus, Manfred Braun and Thomas Ziegler. All three publicly backed the decision to close the WR editorial office on Tuesday. Ratings: Available by the end of January at the latest

Broadcasters, the advertising industry, and the general public are waiting with growing impatience for the ratings from the new Mediapulse TV panel. The data is expected to be available by the end of January at the latest.

The board of directors and the management of Mediapulse and Publica Data have therefore been working particularly intensively over the past few months and days on setting up and commissioning the complex system, according to a statement. The currency character of the television usage data measured by Mediapulse requires extremely precise quality assurance of all processes - from the recording in the 2,000 households to the recording of the approximately 800 reference signals to the weighting and data preparation for the 290 TV stations. It was therefore not possible to release data - even with minor discrepancies (Werbewoche.ch reported).

At the beginning of January, Mediapulse discovered during internal quality checks that a usage correctly identified in the audiomatching process was attributed to the wrong station. In addition, foreign stations with Swiss commercial breaks showed blurring in the allocation of broadcasts to the various country signals, but the commercial breaks themselves were not affected. Mediapulse immediately commissioned the supplier Kantar Media to solve the problems as a result of the irregularities discovered. As soon as the ongoing work is completed, the entire data will be made available from January 1. The release will take place by the end of the month at the latest, ideally earlier.

Mediapulse writes that it is convinced that flawless, high-quality data from the Mediapulse TV panel with its modern collection method will soon be available. As usual, the work will be checked by external experts. The Media Science Commission - supplemented by other specialists if necessary - will be commissioned to check the panel structure and the data immediately.

Last but not least: partners with viral snouts

The friendly match between Galatasaray Istanbul and Ahlen was interrupted because two very happy dogs stormed onto the pitch. Animal videos - the real reason why the internet was invented.

Rot Weiss Ahlen won the game 1:0, but the real stars were the two young retrievers who stormed onto the pitch in the 52nd minute to take part in the action. And the friendly four-legged friends were not really fazed by the clumsy helpers, some of whom had obviously never carried a dog before. The video spread like wildfire across the globe. Quite rightly, one might think. Long live the Internet. (hae)

PS: If you are more of a cat person: Maybe this will tell you this video more about. A cat masters the shell game better than any street cheat.

ZSPR: Do not jeopardize credibility

The Mayor of Lucerne, Stefan Roth, and Marcel Schwerzmann, Finance Director of the Canton of Lucerne, took a look into the future at the New Year's Apéro of the Central Switzerland Public Relations Society (ZSPR) on Monday evening.

Communication creates understanding

After the turn of the year, the regional communications industry always meets for the New Year's Apéro of the Central Switzerland Public Relations Society (ZSPR), according to a press release. In his address to the 80 guests from the worlds of business, politics and culture, Lucerne's mayor Stefan Roth illustrated vividly how communication can create understanding: "Public relations alone does not bake bread, build a railroad or decide a vote. But it helps people become curious about a new product, discover our region as a destination, and understand the issues of a vote." He expressed his conviction that, in addition to the advent of social media, personal contact at events such as the Neujahrapéro will not lose its importance: "Because alone we can all achieve something, but together with the right people a lot more." Also commenting on the development of social media and the associated difficulties in reaching all citizens was Councillor Marcel Schwerzmann. He also called on the guests to do the same as the people of Appenzell in Urnäsch. They celebrate New Year's Eve twice and leave the bad things in the old year, but take the good ones into the new one.

Communication challenges

Brigitte Heinrich, President of the ZSPR, outlined the most important upcoming developments from the association's point of view: "Social media have undoubtedly gone from hype to craft and demand professionals. Further progress will be made in professionalizing communications, especially in non-profit organizations. And also of importance are the media change and the changing news behavior of the population." She also announced the welcome number of 30 new members at Restaurant 1871.

Corrigendum print edition 23/12

The article «Publishers Are Selling Their Content at Ever-Higher Prices» (WW Issue 23/12, December 21, 2012) contained errors and misunderstandings regarding Le Temps subscriptions. As a result, most of the subscription prices in the table are incorrect.

For example, the print subscription to Le Temps will not cost CHF 540 in 2013, but will remain unchanged at CHF 504. The correct price for the e-paper solo is CHF 312 (also unchanged), which means that the e-paper is 38.1 percent cheaper than the print subscription. And the non-replica app is available for CHF 120 per year - as before! There has currently been no reduction of 66.7 percent. It should also be noted that Le Temps was the first Swiss newspaper to introduce a metered paywall two years ago.

As a result of these corrections, a passage at the end of the article should be amended as follows: "The three-tier subscription model of Le Temps is also striking: The print subscription costs 504 francs, the e-paper subscription 312 francs and for the app subscription you pay 120 francs, 76 percent less than for the print subscription." It should also be mentioned that the Saturday edition of Le Temps will be 20 centimes cheaper in single copy sales because it will no longer include the TV8 program guide.

Last but not least: Capital FM gives away stress wedding

The Bern-based local radio station Capital FM is giving away a complete wedding. The catch: It will take place on Valentine's Day and must be organized within two weeks.

Until January 26, couples wishing to get married can register spontaneously. apply. Three will be drawn from all the entries and presented to listeners for a vote from January 28. The winning couple will be presented to the public on February 1. However, too much time should not be lost, as the party will take place just two weeks later. With a budget of 35,000 francs, nothing should be lacking - apart from sufficient preparation time. Location, dress, wedding planner, rings, photographer, invitation cards, flower arrangements, wedding night, limousine, personal trainer, styling and everything else that goes with it (for example, ex-DSDS contestant Jesse Ritch, who will "sing his most beautiful ballads" for the bride and groom).

So if you're already engaged, for example, but don't yet have a wedding date, but have uncomplicated friends and family members, you can confidently consider taking part. After all, a large part of the event seems to have already been organized by Capital FM. However, the decision should not be taken too hastily, as possible follow-up costs such as divorce and alimony payments are not included in the prize (but the Setting your own love story to music). Contexta sucks up lotto balls

Starting now, Swiss Lotto will be played with three fewer balls, meaning the odds of becoming a lottery millionaire are better than ever. Contexta’s current campaign for the new Swiss Lotto explains how this change came about.

In a new TV commercial currently being shown on Swiss television and on the major private channels in neighboring countries, it is ruthlessly revealed how it really came about that Swiss Lotto will make even more millionaires in the future - even in the second prize tier: room attendant M.N. from S. (name known to the agency) recently simply accidentally sucked up the three balls with the numbers 43, 44 and 45 in the SRF Lotto studio in Leutschenbach.

Swisslos and the Bern-based agency Contexta have reacted to this mishap by changing the lottery rules so that from January 12, only 42 instead of 45 numbers plus 6 lucky numbers will be played - making three, four, five and six correct numbers even more likely, according to a press release. On the other hand, with their communication they have turned a GAM (biggest possible mishap) into a unique customer advantage - fewer balls, more lottery millionaires.

Since January 10, the general public has been learning the truth about the new Swiss Lotto not only on television, but also through a radio spot, advertisements, banners, flyers and a clean POS presence. The sales launch of the new Swiss Lotto was also accompanied by a sales-promoting free bet promotion.

Gonna.do: Zurich is fondue world champion

On Saturday, 800 people set the first world record for the largest fondue meal at Zurich main station. At 5 p.m., they simultaneously devoured 200 kilos of fondue cheese from 200 caquelons. The event was organized by Gonna.do and Lipton.

The benches in Zurich's station concourse were completely full with 800 people, as the online leisure platform Gonna.do writes in a press release. The target number of 800 participants was achieved exactly. As this was the first world record attempt in this category, the entry in the Guinness Book of Records should be secured. When the world record was announced at 18:00, there was great joy in the station hall. The participants celebrated their joint success with exuberant applause, whistling and several waves.

With its website and occasional events, Gonna.do aims to help people experience more together. The start-up received support from the Swiss tea brand Lipton, which served hot tea with the fondue.
