Quota debacle - new measurement system under review

The switch to a new system for measuring TV viewership and similar data has turned out to be a debacle for Mediapulse. Clients are questioning the figures that are crucial to them. Experts are now thoroughly re-examining the measurement methods from the ground up.

The previous metering system, which was geared to analog television, had to be replaced with a contemporary new system. It also takes into account time-shifted television and TV consumption via the Internet. The changeover took place at the beginning of the year. A metering system is now being used that is already in use "in 50,000 households in 30 countries," as Mediapulse Chairman of the Board Marco de Stoppani told the media on Tuesday. In Switzerland, 2100 households are connected.

The problems emerged with the first data. The "assignment of the data to the individual stations led to inconsistencies," says Stoppani. Specifically, the measurements did not distinguish correctly when, for example, the same program was broadcast on Tele Züri and on Tele Bärn. The source of the error was discovered and corrected, and everything was recalculated in painstaking detail. But something still obviously didn't work: According to Stoppani, there were "in some cases considerable differences" between the data from 2012 and that from 2013. External experts were commissioned to analyze the new TV panel.

Loss of confidence

The figures collected by Mediapulse are enormously important for TV stations and their advertising clients. Among other things, this information is used to decide on advertising prices and whether to keep or cancel programs. The reactions of the customers were "much stronger than expected," as Stoppani put it. The publication of the first figures was announced for Tuesday - but that was out of the question for Mediapulse's customers. On Monday (yesterday), they demanded to wait until the result of the external expertise was available. Stoppani did not say who specifically demanded a waiver of publication. The demand had come "from various sources, verbally and in writing, and also from lawyers." Legal steps had not yet been initiated, but were in prospect.

Experts at work

Two internationally recognized experts have now been at work for two weeks. They have to assess whether the structure and operation of the Mediapulse panel meets international standards, as Mediapulse managing director Manuel Dähler explained. A third expert, who has not yet been appointed, will clarify whether the regional characteristics of small-scale Switzerland are appropriately represented. The two reports should be available in the first week of March. Customers will then have the opportunity to review them together with the experts. It should be the end of March before the reports are published, Stoppani said.

Until the expert reports are available, Stoppani says measurements will continue to be taken daily, and the data will be made available to customers. Whether everyone will comply with the instruction to keep the figures under wraps for the time being is questionable. Stoppani is "aware of the danger that the figures will go out after all." The Mediapulse Chairman was visibly embarrassed to appear before the media with the bad news. He called it "unpleasant and unpopular." With regard to the repeated postponement of publication dates in recent weeks, Stoppani admitted that the company had "acted and communicated in a suboptimal way". However, he expressed confidence that they were "now on the right track." (SDA)

The sunny suburban idyll of the scene is disturbed right at the beginning: while her husband is wantonly cutting the Internet connection in the garden, a young woman has to realize that she is no longer with Zalando can store. But his triumphant smile disappears when a huge fountain of clothes and packages shoots out of the floor. Last but not least: Horsy funny

The Swiss advertising industry is one of the winners of the horse gate. But now is good. If someone would think about the much-discussed Romanian horses for slaughter, there would be little to laugh about anyway.

The horse fun craze started in 2013 with classic Facebook pictures: A bull mounting a horse and saying, "Hold still - Let's make a burger!". Unfunny. Galloping wild horses shouting "Let's run before they Findus!". Starting to be funny. On Thursday, the new horse humor reached a first peak: Blick Online headlined "Trotz Lasagne Pferdi - Schweizer stürmen Pferdemetzg". Funny (without irony!).

Horse vertisement - a Swiss national sport

The advertising industry picked up on the topic early on and seized the opportunity: Streuplan teased the Hero competition ("We don't want to harp on it, but...") and made people forget the ravioli scandal that Roger Schawinski had uncovered at the end of the 1970s in "Kassensturz," which he had invented (!). The late rehabilitation of canned ravioli.

Hiltl, the mother of all vegetarian restaurants, also reacted promptly and pointed out the Rössli-free lasagna. However, the assembly was brand self-made and had nothing to do with the house agency Ruf Lanz. The zenith of the horse euphoria and hysteria was already exceeded when yesterday Monday first Contexta for Appenzeller cheese and then Rod Kommunikation for Mini ignited the neighing final bouquet. Even if the topic was slowly worn out - one had to laugh nevertheless from the missing horse milk and the 218 lasagna thicknesses. The cheese was not only a record-breaking 45 times over the Advertising Week Facebook Page but also appeared today in the Horse summary from Horizont.net (the compilation consists mostly of Swiss creations - even Hiltl's brave Photoshop attempts made it to the biggest German-language communication stage). But that's enough now anyway, pfertig lustig!

The Talkbacking Angry Citizen in Top Form

The lasagna scandal also generated an incredible commentary response on the news pages. Horsemeat is healthier and better than beef anyway, was said in every second article. Also widespread was the original approach that people would have bought an extra supply of frozen lasagna if they had known about the horsemeat content earlier. With the topic meat the rage citizen usually runs up to the high form - this last bastion one does not want to be taken also still by vegetarians, leftists, nice ones and other Weltverbesserern. Rarely anyone had reservations about eating an animal slaughtered in Romania under dubious (according to SDA even mafia-like) conditions - as long as it is declared as the animal it was before the meat grinder and before the journeys across Europe. And even when the Oerlikon horse butcher in above-mentioned View article stressed that he would never process horsemeat from Eastern Europe ("Often these are working animals that are treated quite badly"), the most popular comment was: "Coop would have been better to put a sticker on the packaging "may contain horsemeat" and sell the lasagna for half the price, zero problemo...".

Zero problemo! By the way: "Kassensturz" - once invented by Roger Schawinski, in case you didn't know it yet - shows in today's edition a contribution that also deals with the horse hype. Topic: "Cruelty to animals on horse farms: Merciless meat production". Most of the horsemeat on the shelves of Swiss retailers, by the way, comes from such places, one learns. Perhaps even for the media a welcome broadening of horizons: Despite all the hysteria - no one thought of the actual protagonists during the whole debate.
